Lootere’ director Jai Mehta has shed light on shooting on a ship for the series, revealing that the actor Vivek Gomber shot an intense firing scene with a pulled muscle and a cut on his leg.
Shooting on a ship presented a lot of challenges for the cast and crew, and reflecting on the same, Jai said: “Shooting is very demanding and difficult on a ship. The ships look nice and big but they’re at times claustrophobic and slippery because they’re made of metal and the surface is dewy most of the time.”
“Vivek Gomber pulled a back muscle during a sequence where he was running away while bullets were being fired; also he had to climb a wall but he slipped and cut his shin. We had medics on set and they wrapped up the wound. However, Vivek shot the entire sequence again with that cut on his leg,...

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta spoke about his “single largest” contribution to son Jai Mehta’s ‘Lootere’. He said that he was there in the role of “somebody who used all the tricks in the Indian filmmaking book.”
Hansal Mehta, the showrunner of ‘Lootere’, said: “The biggest challenge was to make a series like Lootere on such scale within a budget. How does one achieve a story like this with a scale like this without going overboard with the cost, without compromising on the storytelling, and without compromising on the director’s vision.”
“Without it compromising on how Jai wanted to tell the story? My role was primarily to see that Jai’s larger vision did not get compromised because of any constraints and that he can tell the story freely.”
He added: “So I was there in the role of somebody who used all the tricks in the Indian filmmaking book.

Director Jai Mehta has talked about what went into the making of the upcoming thriller series ‘Lootere’. Directed by Jai Mehta, the gripping series follows Rajat Kapoor as the ship captain and his struggle with a criminal legacy.
Mehta said: “We had a process when it came down to setting up tension on screen, we started watching films to understand the shot-taking process and what goes into creating tension on screen; because tension can come in different forms.”
“It can be shown through characters, sound design, camera placement or music so there are lots of ways to bring tension but having 10 characters in one frame, it’s difficult to navigate that tension and make it seem real as well as chaotic at the same time,” he added.
The maker added: “These tense moments are rarely chaotic, they’re more still and quiet so we started going through pictures by photographers...

Lootere(2 episodes, Disney + Hotstar)
Jai Mehta turns out to be quite a chip off the old block, though I doubt Hansal would like to be called a block. Jai’s debut series Lootere, is an assured piece of work with just the right doses of all the ingredients that go into successful storytelling.
Mehta Jr has selected an unusual plot (highsea piracy) and an unexplored location. Somalia looks agreeable through Jai Mehta’s ambitious lenses. This is a series designed for the large screen. The scaling down, however, doesn’t diminish the viewing pleasure.
Set in and around Somalia, Lootere is the story of an Indian-origin entrepreneur grappling with the tense politics of the region while attempting to look into his rather extravagant self-interest. The skilled Vivek Gomber plays a nasty machiavellian businessman in Somalia named Vikrant Gandhi. He wants to not only rule the entrepreneurship of the land but also dominate the local politics.

Director Jai Mehta, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming streaming show ‘Lootere’, said that the toughest casting to pull off on the show was that of the pirates. Pookutty shared the award with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke. The then 37-year-old Pookutty was an unknown name in the country, but it was not to remain so after the Oscar.
But the highlight was when the then Left government led by V.S. Achuthanandan decided to give him a hero’s welcome and the person who was asked to head the welcoming committee was the then Culture Minister M.A. Baby, at present a Cpi-m politburo member.
And on that day in 2009, his tiny village in Kollam district – Anchal – woke up to welcome their dearest son.
Soon Pookutty became the most popular personality in Kerala and stories of his childhood and how he studied under a kerosene lamp and his daily walk to the school about 10 kms all became news.
Also written was how a bus checker’s son, the youngest of eight children, the hardworking Pookutty was able to rise to the highest level.

There are very few movies that create a universal talking point. In the recent past we have seen this happen with Baahubali when everyone was curious about ‘Katappa ne Bahubali ko kyu mara’, which was the cliff-hanger of the first part. On the same lines Drishyam had so much of impact on the audience that its key plot became almost synonym with the date 2nd October!
Drishyam was made by the master storyteller late Nishikant Kamat on the story by Jeethu Joseph. Post the sad demise of Nishikant Kamat the director’s baton was passed on to Abhishek Pathak. One would understand the uphill task that he would have gone through with a benchmark already set in terms of Drishyam and not just that, but Drishyam 2 already released in various south languages and already available on Ott platforms. From that standpoint, we must applaud the efforts put by Abhishek in...

“I love the script,” purrs Neha (Mallika Sherawat), the actress who will play Gulabo in director Rk’s film, “it’s very… you.” And indeed, this film production – “Mera Naseeb” (My Fate), a period film set in the fifties — *is* very Rk, because Rk (Rajat Kapoor) has written it, directs it, and stars in it as the film’s hero, Mahboob. The production does not go as smoothly as its producer, Goel Sahab (Manu Rishi Chadha), would like. Neha has a reputation for being difficult on set, which she lives up to, unable to memorize her lines and cursing out the prompter after making the crew wait three hours while she prepares.
Despite the hiccups, the film is finished ahead of schedule (Rk notes they finished the 40-day schedule in 36 days), but the producer has concerns about the film’s ability to appeal to an audience. Mahboob’s Urdu dialogues,...

The Indie Meme Film Festival, Austin’s leading cinema event curating South Asian independent cinema, returns to movie theaters for the first time in two years. The festival, which was presented virtually in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, comes back in a hybrid format.
The festival will showcase nearly three dozen films from South Asian filmmakers, covering a variety of poignant topics. Each film tells a unique and diverse story of South Asian lives: a child’s struggle in remote India, an Iranian family seeking asylum in Europe, domestic abuse, alcoholism, mental health, patriarchy and colonialism.
Many of the films in this year’s festival focus on issues important to women, including sexuality, education and the family unit.
Through it all, this year’s lineup is a testament to the importance of accepting people for who they are, and each story is told so that audiences of all backgrounds can relate.

Gehraiyaan(Amazon Prime Video)
Starring Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa with Naseeruddin Shah, Rajat Kapoor
Directed by Shakun Batra
“Get out, I don’t want too see your fucking face,” Rajat Sharma playing a cross between a worried friend and a closet fiend barks at Deepika Padukone.
This just about sums up the mood of the irate characters: either they use the F word all the time(“Yeh fuck fuck kya laga rakha hai? An elderly character wonders) or they are just doing it.
I never thought I’d get to hear Deepika Padukone being ticked off so unceremoniously in any film. But there you have to. Beautiful actresses yearn to turn the tables on themselves In Chhapaak, Deepika played a victim of an acid attack with a scarred face. Here in a film ironically titled Gehraiyaan she is cast as a fractured broken woman struggling with...

Call My Agent(Netflix, 6 Episodes)
Directed by Shaad Ali
This adorable adaptation of the 2015 French series is the picture-perfect post-pandemic panacea with a heart that beats and loins that throb. It is everything that an adaptation should be: respectful to the original but not slavishly so.
Slave reminds of Ali Fazal who in one of the sexy sextet of episodes plays a medieval slave to Richa Chadha. For a film being directed by Hussain Dalal. Now , hear this. According to the script, Rich and Ali have broken up and must now perform a ferocious love-making scene for the camera. Ha ha ha.
The series is littered with such luscious inhouse jokes about Bollywood, like Tigmanshu Dhulia making a film called Paiydashi Killer co-starring Lilette Dubey and Ila Arun who, according to the script, can’t stand one another. The two actresses just kill it in the catfights. Nandita Das lets...

“The Rapist,” which has its premiere next month at the Busan International Film Festival is the hardest hitting film that Indian filmmaker Aparna Sen has ever made.
A chronicler of different aspects of Indian life, Sen has previously won global acclaim for her eclectic body of work, which includes “36 Chowringhee Lane” (1981), “Paroma” (1985) and “Iti Mrinalini” (2010) as a director.
Sen is also one of India’s most feted actors who has worked with the stalwarts of the country’s cinema including Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Rituparno Ghosh and internationally with Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.
Sen had the idea for “The Rapist” some 15 years ago, and decided to revisit the subject after the recent spate of rape incidents in India. “I began to wonder about why men rape. No one is born a rapist. They go through infancy, through the toddler stage and through boyhood in all innocence,” Sen tells Variety.

Writer-director Zubie Saurabh Sengupta, who started his career in advertising and created press and film campaigns for leading brands, has recently directed a film titled ‘In The Month of July’ that stars veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh, Shadab Khan, Shamim Akbarali, Aditya Ranvijay Siddhu, Donal Bist, Ranjeet Jha, Richard Joel, Rhea and Sana.
The film is a feel-good film, placed in a small hill-station in Himachal Pradesh and is about a lonely aged man and a much younger forlorn woman locked together in a redundant and loveless marriage, until an outsider, a young man, enters their lives and turns the pages. With its different approach, the film intends to bring in a completely new and fresh experience for its viewers.
