ReFrame, the coalition formed by Women in Film, the Sundance Institute and IMDbPro, has designated a total of 20 films among 2018’s 100 highest-grossing titles to receive the ReFrame Stamp, which recognize standout, gender-balanced films.
The list released Wednesday includes Fox Searchlight’s Oscar Best Picture-nominated The Favourite, Paramount’s Transformers pic Bumblebee, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, Stx’s I Feel Pretty and Lionsgate’s The Spy Who Dumped Me. Nine additional films outside the top 100 were awarded stamps after applying (see the full lists below).
The stamp, launched last June, awarded 12 film stamps in 2017. But the group’s 2018 study found continued disparities in female representation and women of color, with just 4% of the top 100 films directed by a female (down from 6% a year ago), and 23% written by a female. A total of 37% featured female leads, with only 9% being women of color.

The ReFrame coalition of industry leaders and IMDBPro have unveiled 20 movies certified as gender-balanced productions among the top 100 box office films released in 2018.
The list includes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” Paramount Pictures’ “Bumblebee,” Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “The Favourite,” Stx’s “I Feel Pretty,” Lionsgate’s “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” Fox’s “The Hate U Give,” and Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians.”
ReFrame, founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute, launched the data initiative last June in an effort to recognize and promote gender-balanced films and television shows. It said Wednesday that the increase in recipients of the ReFrame Stamp from 12 in 2017 to 20 stemmed from gains in the roles of department heads and women-of-color leads and co-leads. Still, the report noted that there remained shortfalls in several key areas.

Second Act is a comedy in the vein of Working Girl and Maid In Manhattan. Jennifer Lopez stars as Maya, a 40-year-old woman struggling with frustrations from unfulfilled dreams. Until, that is, she gets the chance to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as book smarts, and that it is never too late for a Second Act.

It’s hard not to pre-judge a movie when its leading lady is no other than Jennifer Lopez and its sold as Maid in Manhattan for a new generation. Well, to a certain extent you would be right, but comedy director, Peter Segal has taken the influences of Working Girl and Baby Boom and turned this into an effervescent ‘girl done well’ formulaic story with a handful of girl power.
Lopez plays Maya, just turned 43 and stuck in an assistant manager’s job at a local store for the past 6 years, its a job she can do standing on her head. Though when it comes to that promotion she is passed over by a younger corporate man who is in no way as qualified as her to do the job, just because she never went to that Ivy-league college, oh and did we mention – she was a woman!

Didn't fluffy-minded workplace rom-coms lose their luster in the late 1980's? One would not think so given the emergence of another Jennifer Lopez marshmallow vehicle in the millennium-age Working Girl knockoff Second Act. Rest assure that neither Working Girl collaborators in Oscar-nominated star Melanie Griffith or late director Mike Nichols will lose sleep over filmmaker Peter Segal's slapdish copycat that just quite does not have the cohesiveness or clever wit to elevate this sluggish blue-collar vs. corporate romancer to its credible core. Contrived, patchy, and meandering, Second Act cannot solve the lingering mystery behind J Lo's penchant for queasy comedy romances that have butchered her film career from duds such as Maid in America to Monster-in-Law (the horrible Gigi not withstanding). Screenwriters Justin Zackham and Elaine...

The DC universe’s latest installment, “Aquaman,” is headed for a splashy debut, with an estimated $70 million from 4,125 North American locations.
The forecast sits at the higher end of most predictions for the film’s pre-Christmas debut. “Aquaman” has amassed $350.7 million internationally, including $18.9 million on Friday. Jason Momoa stars as the titular hero, with Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard and Patrick Wilson co-starring.
Warner Bros. gave the film a pricey $200 million budget, which it has already recouped overseas. It’s the first standalone Dcu film since 2017’s “Wonder Woman,” which debuted with $103 million last year, eventually totaling $412 million domestically.
The Transformers franchise’s newest addition, “Bumblebee,” is edging “Mary Poppins Returns” for second place with an estimated $22 million from 3,550 domestic sites, compared to “Mary Poppins'” $21 million.
“Bumblebee” earned $8.46 million on Friday with $2.15 million from Thursday previews. The Paramount pic opens in China, which has proven to be the “Transformers” franchise’s most successful market,...

Anyone want a pretty package of rom-com fluff for the holidays? You won’t hear shout-outs to Second Act on late-breaking Top 10 lists, but this sweet and sassy confection, directed by Peter Segal (Grudge Match), delivers miles of smiles tied up in a bow. You wouldn’t be wrong if you’re thinking this wish-fulfillment tale of a working-class woman bum-rushing the corporate world is trying to be a Working Girl for millennials. And while it can’t deliver the boundary-pushing kick of that seminal 1988 Melanie Griffith-vs.-the glass ceiling smash,...

The early beats of Peter Segal’s “Second Act” won’t just feel familiar to fans of the working-girl-makes-good genre – best exemplified by, of course, “Working Girl” – but to fans of star Jennifer Lopez’s own filmography. In 2002, the multi-hyphenate starred in “Maid in Manhattan,” in which her titular maid is mistaken for a socialite and just goes with it to improve her life (and up her chances of snagging her handsome love interest). Similar forces are at play in the initially amiable “Second Act,” in which Lopez again stars as a woman who changes her life through the awesome power of basically just lying a lot and hoping no one is ever the wiser.
But whereas “Maid in Manhattan” took its Cinderella premise to predictable ends, “Second Act” isn’t content to let Lopez’s striving Maya zoom through the rarefied ranks of the business world, proving to everyone...

Say what you will about Jennifer Lopez, but one thing is true: She takes risks. Never sticking to a particular type, she has run the gamut in her choice of films from romantic comedies to thrillers to biopics and beyond. “Second Act” is her first live-action film since 2015’s “The Boy Next Door,” and it feels like a confused puppy, caught between a stale script and a very confused storyline that frequently loses focus.
Maya (Jennifer Lopez) is a big-box store assistant manager who has goals. She wants to wow her boss (Larry Miller) in the hopes of getting a well-deserved promotion to general manager. Instead, he introduces her to the white guy (Dan Bucatinsky) with an Ivy League Mba he hired for the position. Why? Because she isn’t a college grad, and no matter how many years she has put into the store, how loved she is by her co-workers,...

Jennifer Lopez’s career gets a major upgrade in the first trailer for Stx’s “Second Act,” thanks to a reinvention by her friends.
Lopez plays a woman named Maya, who gets passed over for a promotion at her dead-end job. “I just wish we lived in a world where street smarts equal book smarts,” Maya tells her good friend, played Leah Remini.
In response, her friends create an impressive social history, including photos with President Barack Obama, and a resume showing fluency in Mandarin along with a business degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. That leads to her getting a new job at a swanky Manhattan office.
“Second Act” is directed by Peter Segal, and also stars Milo Ventimiglia as Maya’s husband, Vanessa Hudgens as her co-worker, and Treat Williams. The movie was developed by STXfilms with Lopez from an idea conceived by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas,...

When a smug, male co-worker and rival for a promotion tells Jennifer Lopez, out loud and with witnesses no less, that getting the job won’t be easy “for a woman your age,” you know Second Act promises the kind of workplace comeuppance fantasyland that fueled Working Girl and Lopez’ own Maid in Manhattan. And you definitely know J Lo is going to land that job.
The only question remaining is, at what cost? That’s the premise of director Peter Segal’s new comedy from STXfilms. Lopez stars as Maya, “a 40-year-old woman struggling with frustrations from unfulfilled dreams,” as the logline puts it.
“I just wish we lived in a world where street smarts equal book smarts,” Maya tells the pal (Leah Remini) who will soon join in a plot to upgrade Maya’s resume and social media history, with Maya none the wiser. Fake photos with Obama,...

On the night of June 9th 2007, a new television reality show called ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ went on air in the UK. On its first ever broadcast, a shy, unassuming man opened his mouth to sing the famous operatic aria ‘Nessun Dorma’, delivering a beautiful, stirring rendition that would change his life from that moment forward.
Swept up in the contagious emotion of Giacomo Puccini’s stunning aria, and the unlikely figure with crooked teeth and diluted confidence who had crooned it for them, the show’s three judges – Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan – stared in awe at what they had just witnessed, while the audience of 2,000 at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff erupted in a standing ovation.

Selena’s turn as a gun-toting, car-almost-jacking thrill-seeker on the big screen has earned her a major nomination!

But hey, a nomination’s a nomination — even if the category is “Worst Actress” — so we’d like to take this time to congratulate our girl Selena on her prestigious recognition.
Selena Gomez’s Razzie Nomination: Why We’re Proud Of Her
Films are designed to move us, one way or another, and Getaway did just that. Selena’s film stirred enough emotion within the hearts and minds of the Razzies’ nominating committee that it chose to bestow this nomination upon her, and for that, we salute her.

Paul Potts movie ‘One Chance’ wins 2013 Starz Denver Film Festival Audience Award (photo: James Corden as ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ hit Paul Potts looking at Brad Pitt photo in ‘One Chance’) Among the winners at the 2013 Starz Denver Film Festival (Sdff), which ran November 6-17, was David Frankel’s One Chance, the story of Paul Potts, a timid shop assistant and amateur opera singer who eventually topped "Britain’s Got Talent." James Corden plays Potts, while Julie Walters and Colm Meaney are his parents. Director Frankel’s best-known movies are The Devil Wears Prada (2006), which earned Meryl Streep a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for playing Anne Hathaway’s style-conscious boss and nemesis, and the sentimental blockbuster Marley & Me (2008), toplining Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. A 2012 reunion with Meryl Streep in Hope Springs, also featuring Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell, did only moderate business. This year’s Starz Denver...

Given the vast amount of manufactured, Simon Cowell creations that now exist in the world, it was inevitable that one of these inspirational tales would be eventually be brought to the big screen, and it seemed somewhat apt for the very first to be that of Paul Potts – the winner of the first Britain’s Got Talent. One Chance, directed by David Frankel is a film that feels as commercially manufactured as the shows of which it’s depicting, yet that is by no means a bad thing – because more often than not, that guarantees to be a sure-fire hit.
James Corden plays Potts, depicting his rise from being a shop assistant as Carphone Warehouse, to being the toast of the nation, and performing live before the Queen. Growing up in Port Talbot where he is hopelessly in love with Julia-Ann (Alexandra Roach), the youngster suffers drastically from a loss of confidence,...

Appearances can be deceiving. Just as viewers may have made a snap judgement when Paul Potts nervously shuffled onto the stage for his first Britain's Got Talent audition, the movie based on his life is being greeted with just as much scepticism.
One Chance stars James Corden as Potts, the Carphone Warehouse manager whose reality TV victory turned him into a platinum-selling tenor. Despite the general cynicism surrounding the release it's a much better film than you'd expect from something coming out of the Syco stable. Like the crushingly dull documentary This Is Us, One Chance is strictly 'on-message', yet even in the framework of scripted narrative it still rings truer than the One Direction movie.

James Corden has always been rather likeable, and in director David Frankel's feel-good biopic One Chance he reaches new, lofty heights of likability as Paul Potts, the 2007 winner of Britain's Got Talent. The movie is the first of its kind, really, the first narrative biopic about the new brand of celebrity, ordinary people chosen, cultivated, and catapulted into stardom by the people.
The rags to riches tale takes a few liberties with the inspiring story of Potts, who amazed Talent judges Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan with a rendition of 'Nessun dorma' that no-one in the audience had been expecting.
When we meet Paul, he is a shy, lonely employee at the Carphone Warehouse, the only son of two working class parents. And, of course, he harbours a love of music,...

Please note that this is a capsule review. Our full review is under embargo until the film’s release date, which is October 25th.
A biopic with a polished look and a sugary-sweet tone, One Chance is the “true story” (with omissions and/or embellishments, of course) of Paul Potts, the inaugural winner of mega-tv hit Britain’s Got Talent.
Paul (played with baby-faced earnestness by James Corden) never really fit in with the other neighbours in his blue collar UK village. While the other boys at school were playing football, he was singing in the church choir and then running home to listen to opera records for hours, trying to perfect his own voice. He was also the object of severe bullying both from his peers and from his own rough-and-tumble father (Colm Meaney), who never really understood his sensitive son.

Since the inception of reality TV competitions, there have been plenty of stories of average people rising to fame overnight. One such tale is that of Paul Potts, a shop singer turned world famous opera singer who made waves after Simon Cowell picked him for "Britain's Got Talent." Now the story of Potts is getting the feature film treatment in One Chance (premiering at Tiff 2013 this week) from director David Frankel with "Gavin & Stacey" star James Corden taking the lead role with Julie Walters (Mrs. Weasley from Harry Potter) and Colm Meaney (Con-Air, Get Him to the Greek). It looks pretty cheesy in this first trailer, but it could be a cute little story for those who don't know Potts' story. Watch the trailer below! Here's the first trailer for David Frankel's One Chance, originally from Empire: One Chance is directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) and...

Susan Sarandon (ctr.) comes between Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro--for a moment--in The Big Wedding.
Robert De Niro (Limitless) and Diane Keaton (Morning Glow) star in the romantic comedy The Big Wedding, which received awful reviews from the critics, but certainly doesn’t lack in the big-name co-star department.
When the long-divorced Don (De Niro) and Ellie (Keaton) are forced to reunite to play the happy couple for their adopted son’s (Ben Barnes, The Words) wedding weekend, anything can happen. After learning his biological mother (Patricia Rae) is unexpectedly flying halfway across the world for the event, the duo must work together to convince her they are still happily married, much to the amusement of their adult children and friends.

The Comedian
(15) (Tom Shkolnik, 2012, UK) Edward Hogg, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. 79 mins
There's an uncanny degree of naturalism to this downbeat sketch of a lost London soul, confused over his sexuality, his faltering stand-up career and his place in life. It was made with a Dogme-like set of rules encouraging spontaneous improvisation in real locales. The result is somewhere between Mike Leigh and mumblecore, a meandering slice of life that often hits the truth.
Byzantium
(15) (Neil Jordan, 2013, UK/Us/Ire) Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, Sam Riley. 118 mins
There might be little left to say about vampires, but genre veteran Jordan has a better right (and better actors) than most to say it. This tale of two 200-year-old women hiding out in a coastal town is more mature and less gory than most offerings.

★★☆☆☆ Given the eclectic and well-respected actors that make up The Big Wedding's (2013) ensemble cast, you'd be forgiven for thinking this could one be a blast; a more adult take on the family wedding sub-genre and, with such calibre on show, a great match-up on paper. In reality, however, it's more kind-of-funny-in-an-awkward way than laugh-out-loud hilarity - though any film that starts with Robert De Niro giving oral sex to Susan Sarandon deserves some kudos, if just for the sheer ballsiness of it. Director Justin Zackham continues at pace with this familiar form of teen-humour-as-performed by gracious, accomplished thesps.

At some weddings, more than a handful of guests forcibly feign joy at their friend or family member’s matrimony, aware that any outpouring of adverse sentiment – however justifiable – would paint them as a blasphemously selfish anomaly within an aura of exultation. Those with a grudge to bear assume a mask to layer over any underlying misgivings or tensions, thus avoiding any unwelcome disputes. Movie weddings, however, rarely go off without a hitch. There are always secrets to be told, never untold. It’s only fitting, then, that those with the most skeletons in The Big Wedding are central to the wedding aisle, and whose voices carry to the farthest pew.
Being that this star-studded remake of the 2006 French film Mon frère se marie has added an adjective to its original title of The Wedding, it’s evident that director Justin Zackham believes the idiom that bigger is indeed better.

An all-star cast fall victim to a shallow, tasteless script in The Big Wedding, the latest in the line of lacklustre comedies to hit cinema screens this year. This one though, which was adapted from the well-received French romantic comedy Mon Frère Se Marie, heralds a new low with its arrival – one that proves that no matter how much money or A-list stars you throw into the mix, if the material isn’t up to scratch, then there’s no point in even bothering.

Despite an A-List line-up, The Big Wedding feels small in many ways. One can only assume there was a big fat paycheck involved for the likes of Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon and Diane Keaton to negotiate a script with such lack of ambition, laughs and insight. But then, the runtime does force them to drag out a story that could have been ripped from a sitcom.
The desperation is evident early on when Ellie (Keaton) lets herself into the home of ex-husband Don (De Niro) and is forced to endure the spectacle of his head disappearing up the skirt of his second wife Bebe (Sarandon). To make the situation ickier, it gradually becomes apparent that Bebe was once Ellie's best friend, but they've somehow managed to stay on amicable terms.

The Big Wedding
Starring Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl, Topher Grace, Ben Barnes, Amanda Seyfried, and Robin Williams
Directed by Justin Zackham
Rated R
When you have a film with a talented group led by Robert De Niro you should expect something better than so-so. That’s not the case with The Big Wedding. The film has the appeal of a Nora Ephron film and the polish of a Lifetime movie. The characters aren’t likeable or even relatable and every one of their arcs is met with clichés. I didn’t have a terrible time with it but it’s not the film you should see in theaters, only on TV when it’s playing on TNT. Also, it's a waste of talent.
Don (De Niro) is the father of three children, Lyla (Katherine Heigl), Jared (Topher Grace) and Alejandro (Ben Barnes) who was adopted from Colombia.
