When Tuesday morning’s Oscar nominations were announced, “Barbie” star America Ferrera was snuggled in bed alone and watching on her phone as her husband Ryan Piers Williams drove their kids to school.
“There was a moment where I wasn’t sure if I had made it up,” Ferrera tells Variety. “And then my phone started blowing up so I figured that I must have heard it right.”
The overwhelming emotion surrounding earning her first Academy Award nomination — for playing Gloria, the human lens through which “Barbie” is viewed in the $1.4 billion blockbuster comedy — has been shock. “I still haven’t really been able to get in my feelings because I’m still on like the top layer of ‘I can’t even believe that this is real,'” Ferrera explains.

"Barbie" made an undeniable impact on the world at large when it premiered in July. The film comes complete with a stacked cast and plenty of amazing fashion choices, but it's also notable because it's packed with Easter eggs that reference everything from cultural touchstones to hidden histories.
From the moment its first trailer dropped, the film immediately gave the internet a number of instantly iconic moments to admire, from Barbie (Margot Robbie)'s "Matrix"-esque choice between a high heel and a Birkenstock to Ken (Ryan Gosling)'s exuberant mug shot. The movie also features some less noticeable Easter eggs that show just how much its creative team - which includes the celebrated filmmaking duo Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach - paid attention to detail. Ahead, check out some of the most notable Easter eggs in the film.

You have to cleanse your mind sometimes when you see some films. You get trapped in a seat for ninety-plus minutes as the cobwebs form in your brain at home as you watch. Your mind screams for the end credits to roll and when they do it’s with a perverse fascination with more attention than you gave the film to who made what you just saw. This post contains spoilers for "Barbie."
During the final scene of "Barbie," the titular iconic toy (Margot Robbie) sits in the back seat of a car with her new human family: Gloria (America Ferrera), Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt), and her Duolingo-loving husband (Ryan Piers Williams). With her beaming smile and business casual outfit, I assumed she was going to a job interview — an important milestone that would mark her independence as a human woman.
It certainly seems that way when Barbie triumphantly walks up to an office front desk and gives a more professional name, Barbara Handler, honoring the daughter of her creator Ruth Handler. Then, writer/director Greta Gerwig wallops the audience with an ingenious final line: "I'm here to see my gynecologist."
Greta Gerwig elaborated on the "mystical" origins of this clever piece of dialogue in a recent interview with IndieWire:

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie is packed with cameos, including an appearance from America Ferrera's husband, Ryan Piers Williams. While Williams is typically writing and directing, it seems he couldn't miss an opportunity to star opposite his favorite Barbie as Gloria's (Ferrera) Duolingo-savvy husband. On screen, their interactions are minimal, but off screen, their chemistry is undeniable.
"My favorite & forever Ken, you cute."
"My favorite & forever Ken, you cute," Ferrera captioned Instagram photos of herself and her husband at the European premiere of "Barbie" in London on July 12. In his own Instagram post, Williams added, "I can't wait for you all to see America in this film!" The couple also walked the pink carpet at the "Barbie" world premiere in Los Angeles on July 9. Issues of discrimination and exclusion in Hollywood are often driven by baseless beliefs about marginalized communities, and even efforts to increase diversity sometimes get stalled in the “listening phase” without prioritizing action. That’s why Harness and Untitled Latinx Project (Ulp) co-produce Dear Hollywood (Demanding Equal Access and Representation in Hollywood). The initiative focuses on concrete, data-based strategies for change.
“Latine storytellers and Latine storytelling has lived in the shadows since the advent of Hollywood. It’s always been like this,” said “Vida” creator and Ulp member Tanya Saracho while opening Dear Hollywood and UTA’s Latine Heritage Month event. “We are allowed a glimpse of light here and there, but we always go back in the shadows. We never remained in the light long enough to make substantial progress.”
“They canceled our ‘Gordita Chronicles,'” Saracho continued, referring to the coming-of-age comedy executive produced by Eva Longoria and Zoe Saldaña...

At this point, it's become something of a ritual for America Ferrera. Whenever she and husband Ryan Piers Williams take nearly 3-year-old son Sebastian and 12-month-old daughter Lucia to the park "and you see a mom with a baby under 1, you're like, 'Oh, pandemic baby! You too? How's it been for you?'" she detailed in an exclusive chat with E! News. She actually spied a fellow warrior just the other day. "I met a mother and father with a sweet young girl who's basically the exact same age as my daughter and we started talking about our experiences," Ferrera revealed. And while the other couple's had been particularly harrowing—"It had...

Prepare to break out the handkerchiefs several times during writer-director Yen Tan’s “1985,” a deeply emotional tearjerker and family story set in a year when an HIV diagnosis was effectively a death sentence. This is a realistic, discreet, yet exploratory film that earns its tears honestly and scrupulously.
Gay, closeted, and HIV-positive Adrian comes home to Texas for Christmas for what he knows will probably be the last time. Tan’s camera keeps a polite and empathetic distance from Adrian and his parents Dale (Michael Chiklis) and Eileen (Virginia Madsen), both of whom are very religious, and his little brother Andrew.
The set-up of this story admittedly doesn’t sound too promising, and the very grainy black-and-white cinematography might be a problem for some viewers, but “1985” is a film that is full of virtues, not least the acting talent of its cast, who are all expert at conveying a lot...
