Blending found footage and what appears to be grainy 16mm (they shot the film on an early Dv as a matter of fact), Kyle McConaghy and Joe DeBoer’s Dead Mail embraces the creepiness of its concept. Like Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow or Kyle Edward Ball’s Skinamarink, this is the stuff of subconscious nightmares, though Dead Mail falls slightly more into the slasher camp. The film is effectively creepy from the feeling that––à la Harmony Korine’s Trash Humpers––it’s a relic of the past. Also, like Schoenbrun’s film, it suggests a story that could have been imagined from a 20/20 segment or a late-night documentary that a child should not have watched after their bedtime but nevertheless did.

Writers/Directors Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy’s lo-fi ’80s psychological thriller, Dead Mail, anchors its offbeat story, characters, and retro style around profound loneliness. Bloody Disgusting spoke with the filmmakers along with stars Sterling Macer Jr. and John Fleck at SXSW, where the film made its world premiere, about their unique approach to the genre-bender.
Dead Mail leans heavily into the ’80s analog aesthetic, delivering a unique crime thriller unafraid to get weird with its dark narrative.
In the film, “On a desolate, Midwestern county road, a bound man crawls towards a remote postal box, managing to slide a blood-stained plea-for-help message into the slot before a panicking figure closes in behind him. The note makes its way to the county post office and onto the desk of Jasper, a seasoned and skilled ‘dead letter’ investigator, responsible for investigating lost mail and returning it to its sender. Obsession and profound loneliness drive writers/directors Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy’s lo-fi psychological thriller, Dead Mail. On paper, the premise reads like a familiar crime tale, yet the filmmakers’ execution quickly proves Dead Mail to be anything but conventional. A reinvention of the ‘80s aesthetic, a deft genre blend, and intimate empathy afforded to all of its unique characters make this retro form experiment a fascinating watch.
A bound and bloody man, Josh (Sterling Macer Jr.), manages to crawl out of a house on an empty Illinois street and shove a bloodied letter into the mailbox before his captor drags him kicking and screaming back inside. That letter finds its way to the desk of post office worker Jasper (Tomas Boykin), a skilled investigator of “dead mail.” Jasper’s investigation of the letter coincides with the arrival of Trent (John Fleck) at the men’s center where he resides,...

When a mysterious bloody plea for help ends up in the dead letter office of a rural post office, the inspector on site becomes determined to find its origin, leading him down a deadly road in writer/directors Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy’s new lo-fi thriller Dead Mail. Opening with a desperate man crawling toward the postal box with a hastily scribbled, somewhat vague note covered in blood in what appears to be a last-ditch effort to free himself and quickly circling back on itself, there’s nothing common or expected about Dead Mail. The message makes its way through chatty long-timers Ann (Micki Jackson) and Bess (Susan Priver) in the sorting room en route to missing mail guru, Jasper (Tomas Boykin). Jasper has a knack for...

"The one to strike fear is the man who is alone." An early festival promo teaser has debuted for the indie horror thriller film titled Dead Mail, the second feature from indie genre filmmakers Joe DeBoer & Kyle McConaghy (also of Bab in 2020). This is premiering at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival soon and this trailer will give genre fans an early look at what's going down in this. Though all of this footage just makes me even more confused - who is this guy and why is he chained up in this room?! An ominous help note finds its way to a 1980s post office, connecting a dead letter investigator to a kidnapped keyboard technician. As Jasper investigates further, he meets Trent, a strange yet unassuming man who has taken up residence at the men’s home where Jasper lives and has an interest in this letter. The indie film stars Sterling Macer, Jr.,...

Bloody Disgusting’s The Munsters review is spoiler-free.
Horror musician and auteur Rob Zombie is a lifelong fan of The Munsters. The ‘60s sitcom hinged its humor upon a family of odd Transylvanians that behave and consider themselves an average American family. Zombie’s enduring fondness for the show is evident throughout his career, including his 1998 hit song “Dragula,” finally culminating in a feature film that serves as a meet-cute origin story. Zombie attempts to faithfully recreate the original sitcom’s sense of humor, embracing the ridiculous while applying his modern style.
It results in uneven, clashing tones and a story far less interesting than it looks.
Vampire Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie) longs for love. Her father, The Count (Daniel Roebuck), sets her up on blind dates, but Transylvania’s most eligible bachelors tend to disappoint. Lily finds her perfect mate assembled from various human parts, including that of recently...

Back in the 1960s, if you wanted to watch a weekly sitcom about monsters living in suburbia, there were only two games in town: “The Addams Family,” about a group of kooks whose wealth and largely normal looks gave them the freedom to pursue their freaky interests, and “The Munsters,” about a working-class group of unmistakable monsters whose outward appearance provided a humorous contrast to their utter normalcy.
The Addams Family have gone on to great cinematic success in the decades following their sitcom (and the New Yorker cartoons on which it was based), with successful live-action and animated movies to their name. But Hollywood hasn’t been quite so kind to The Munsters. Their show was originally a bigger hit than “The Addams Family,” but they’ve never been cinematically rebooted for the big screen. (Not counting the series spinoff “Munster Go Home!” in 1966.)

The Munsters are, by design, a comedic reinvention of the classic monsters – Herman is Frankenstein’s monster, Lily is a vampire, Grandpa is Count Dracula, and Eddie is a werewolf – but other interpretations of iconic creatures occasionally made appearances.
Before TV’s first family of fright returns in Rob Zombie’s The Munsters, let’s look back at six classic monsters that have appeared in The Munsters Universe up to this point.
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Despite only appearing on screen for about a minute and a half, Uncle Gilbert is perhaps the most memorable member of the Munsters’ extended family. The reason is simple: he’s the Gill-man from the Creature from the Black Lagoon franchise.
In “Love Comes to Mockingbird Heights”, Uncle Gilbert sends the family 180,000 worth of gold doubloons from the old country for safekeeping until he arrives to visit. This inciting incident sets the plot in motion,...

Rob Zombie's Firefly family returns for a real day of the dead in the 3 From Hell trailer.
Free the three! Now we can have a real day of the dead. Just when you thought there was no justice in this world, the first full-length 3 From Hell trailer promises a bloodbath and a devil of a time. The odds were a million to one against Capt. Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis Firefly (Bill Moseley), and Vera-Ellen "Baby" Firefly (Sheri Moon Zombie) surviving their standoff with the police at their last rampage, but with a little faith, nothing is impossible.
3 From Hell is a family movie. The Firefly family has a deadly tradition going back to 2003, with Rob Zombie's directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses making way for the 2005 sequel The Devil's Rejects. Written and directed by Rob Zombie, the trilogy tells the story of Dr. Satan and his merry band of murderous misfits.

Director Adam Mason’s dark comedy “Junkie” was recently acquired by the boys and girls at Indiecan Entertainment. With a little assistance from FilmBuff, the movie will soon be available on a variety of different platforms. This is definitely good news for those of you who love savagely humorous films about drug addiction. Although I didn’t love his 2007 flick “The Devil’s Chair,” I really thought Mason’s 2010 endeavor “Pig” was entertaining. Since the guy is hit and miss in my book, “Junkie” could go either way. At least it stars Robert Lasardo. That dude is a beast. Here’s the official synopsis if you’re curious about such things: Co-written by Mason and Simon Boyes, this twisted darkly comedic tale of out-of-control addiction stars Daniel Louis Rivas as a man trying to go clean, and Robert Lasardo as his psychotic brother, who will do anything to stand in his way.

While I continue to read hilarious stories about Charlie Sheen and briefcase full of coke, now's probably a good time to tell you about Adam Mason's Junkie. The boys over at Twitch Film landed behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Mason's latest psychological mind-trip that stars Tess Panzer, Andrew Howard, Caroline Guivarch, Robert Lasardo, Daniel Louis Rivas and Tomas Boykin in a gritty, violent tale of addicts behaving badly. You can click the link for all of the bloody pics. Mason directed Blood River, The Devil's Chair, Pig and the forthcoming Luster. This film reteams him with regular Andrew Howard who can also be seen in the I Spit on Your Grave remake from Anchor Bay.

This one is called simply, I Am, and it seems to be picking up where Morgan Freeman left off; specifically a black actor playing what, for all intents and purposes, appears to be God… the big guy upstairs (or the idea of God, or a God-like character anyway).
The synopsis reads: A desperate heiress… A beautiful reporter… A vengeful detective… A charismatic district attorney…. In modern-day Los Angeles, all of their lives will intersect, leading to profound choices that test each character’s morality. With guidance from a mysterious stranger, these lost souls desperately search for answers.
It’s obviously aimed at the religious crowd (a group I’m not a member of, but maybe you are), with its direct-to-church release strategy, courtesy of 20th Century Fox. That’s right, I said direct-to-church. This month, 20th Century Fox is collaborating with churches literally all over the...

The film itself pits one abused nun against a corrupt clergy, with guns and sex appeal the only way to salvation. So, support healthy breasts everywhere, and a great film, by ordering your tickets soon (this showing will undoubtedly sell out). More details below.

Nnwbg PosterThis is an independent film which has been making a lot of buzz for mixing sexuality with spirituality, especially Catholicism. Nude Nuns with Big Guns offers more than controversy however, as Sister Sarah is tormented in this first trailer for the film. This is a mature clip, since Sarah is drugged, stripped and left for dead. But much like Jesus she returns from near death to prove that she "is one bad mother!" (Camelot). Check out the clip below.
