Based on its setup, The New Daughter would appear to be a ghost story. A troubled novelist moves his two children into a large and isolated house in rural South Carolina, and immediately they start to experience things that cannot be so readily explained. The audience might soon expect to see spirits of the dead haunting the film’s family, yet the fact is, something else entirely lurks on this cursed property.
Kevin Costner was coming off positive reviews for his villainous role in the psychological thriller Mr. Brooks when he was cast as the father in The New Daughter. Also joining the first directorial feature from Rec screenwriter Luis Berdejo was Pan’s Labyrinth star Ivana Baquero. The talent behind this adaptation of author John Connolly’s short story piqued an interest at the time, but upon its release in 2009, critics largely panned the film, singling out the pacing, the...

"Well, she lives in a fairy tale," declares Hayley Williams in the opening lyric of "Brick by Boring Brick," a 2009 single by Paramore, initially released as part of their third album "Brand New Eyes." Williams continues belting out, "Somewhere too far for us to find, forgotten the taste and smell of a world that she's left behind."
As the song continues on for another four minutes, the fairy tale allusions continue; one of them is a title drop: "Well, make sure to build your home brick by-by boring brick, Or the wolf's gonna blow it down."
However, the opening verse establishes the song's key theme right off the bat: retreating into your imagination is like refusing to grow up. The Pov character realizes she must bury her childhood fantasies to escape her dream world. The song's music video reflects this, alternating in focus between Williams herself and a young girl...

Most are introduced to the tale of Pinocchio by Walt Disney. The wooden boy with a nose that grows was the star of Disney's second produced picture, arriving in 1940 on the heels of 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." While Disney is an essential piece to Pinocchio's legend, the story does not begin or end with them.
Guillermo del Toro, one of those young boys who first met Pinocchio via the Disney film, released his own version of the story last year. Speaking to The Wrap, del Toro revealed his evolving reaction to Disney's "Pinocchio":
"I saw [Disney's] 'Pinocchio' as a very young kid, and I loved it because I found it captured how scary childhood felt to me. But I didn't quite understand why he needed to be an obedient boy to be loved. And then in my 20s, I started thinking that it would be...

This article contains spoilers for "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio."
Even when adapting others' stories, Guillermo del Toro always puts a personal thumbprint on his movies. He remixed Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" as a superhero spin on Beauty and the Beast, reframing the relationship between the eponymous hero (Ron Perlman) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) as a love story. In his 2021 remake of "Nightmare Alley," he eschewed the ghostly black-and-white color scheme of the original film. Courtesy of cinematographer Dan Laustsen, del Toro's film mixed lurid, snowy blues with golden yellow hues; the blood really pops in both colors.
The filmmaker's most recent feature, the stop-motion "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" was released on Netflix, to critical acclaim. The tale of the wooden boy is a classic that's been retold many times, but del Toro found a fresh way to spin the story and make it feel a piece with his films...

Horror has always been a matter of perspective. The maniac with a knife just isn’t as intimidating when he’s facing off against a Swat team, and the only thing keeping Predator from turning into an all-out slasher flick is the size of the protagonists’ biceps. It’s a lot easier to fear for a helpless victim, and that’s why it makes sense that so many scary stories focus on children and childhood fears.
After all, what’s more vulnerable than a child? And with so many child-centric scary movies out there, we’ve come up with this list celebrating six of the best “Final Kid” performances in horror.
Talented child actors are hard to come by, so I think it’s time to shine a light on the pint-sized survivors that helped to make some of our favorite horror flicks so memorable.

Black Friday, every retail worker’s nightmare. We’ve all seen the memes comparing the mall zombies from Dawn of the Dead to shoppers pressed up against the doors, waiting for their chance to maim each other over a cheap TV set. And now, thanks to director Casey Tebo (Happy Birthday) and writer Andy Greskoviak, that meme has come full circle and inspired its own movie. Is it one worth lining up to get, or something to grab from the post-Christmas clearance rack?

On Halloween we celebrate creepy things. On Christmas we celebrate Christian beliefs, or family and togetherness. In between, on Black Friday, we celebrate capitalism – or at least, that seems to be the idea. It’s the world’s most painfully artificial party, but some people still go crazy over it. Those who really find it hard going, of course, are the unfortunate retail staff who have to cope with the rush.

"There is something wrong with the shoppers!" Screen Media Films has released the official trailer for a horror comedy titled Black Friday, set at a big toy store on Thanksgiving night just before the opening of Black Friday at midnight. And guess who's back at S-Mart! I mean, at "We Love Toys" - Bruce Campbell! Sporting a mighty fine gray mustache in this film (which makes him look like John Cleese in a few of the shots). Story manager Jonathan and his longtime employee Ken soon find them themselves battling against hordes of holiday shoppers that have been turned into monstrous creatures taken over by a parasite hellbent on a murderous rampage. The comedy stars Devon Sawa, Ivana Baquero, Ryan Lee, Stephen Peck, Michael Jai White, plus the one-and-only Bruce Campbell. This isn't the most original concept, but it does look quite fun anyway. The zombie people look mean, the kills look ridiculous and amusing.

For anyone that has ever worked retail on that dreaded day of the year, regular customers can be challenging but alien parasite infected ones can be downright horrifying. Unfortunately, the employees of We Love Toys are going to find out just how frightening the busiest shopping day in the world can be. In the trailer, we are introduced to store manager, Jonathan...

One of the most highly anticipated indie horror films of the year is Casey Tebo’s Black Friday. Ever since Deadline announced that principal shooting had begun in November 2020, genre fans have been awaiting the arrival of this holiday chiller. Boasting a cast with genre veterans, Devon Sawa, Michael Jai White, Ivana Baquero and the iconic Bruce Campbell, it is understandable why this production is generating positive buzz. The Andy Greskoviak-penned tale has its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on Friday, September 24. According to Tebo, both screenings are sold out, which isn’t surprising. Unfortunately, not much information beyond the premise of the film (a group of toy store employees grapple with zombie shoppers on the biggest day in retail) and the shooting location (Boston)...

There’s magic in the air at Midsummer, traditionally a time when the faerie world is thought to be close to our own and crossing between the two all too easy. There’s danger in this as well as wonder, even if you stay well away from Midsommar-style rituals, and our Spotlight this week aims to show you a little of both, with films for viewers of different ages. Sit back and let yourself be enchanted by the silver screen – just remember that faerie glamour is never quite what it seems.

People do tend to grow up after a while and that’s usually more than apparent when looking at those that started out as child actors and managed to endure their teen years without too much stress or nonsense that can come from being a star. Ivana Baquero is one of those individuals since if anyone remembers her from Pan’s Labyrinth they’ll probably wonder what she’s been up to in recent years, and with a cursory search they’ll find out that she’s been doing quite well. Looking at what she’s done with her career might impress some folks and leave others

‘Pan’s Labyrinth’: Innocence and Moral Disobedience in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘El laberinto del fauno’
Photo: 'Pan's Labyrinth'/Warner Bros. Pictures For over twenty years, Guillermo del Toro, a Mexican filmmaker, author, actor, and former special effects makeup artist, kept the creation of Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) in the pages of a notebook. It was not until June 2005, when filming began, and not until the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, where Pan’s Labyrinth would exit one's mind and reach the hearts of millions. Pan’s Labyrinth is a realistic fairy tale set in 1944 located in rural Spain where a young girl named Ofelia (played by Ivana Baquero) finds herself amid good vs. evil (evil being followers of Francoist Spain and good being anti-Francoist) all while discovering a magical world that believes her to be the reincarnation of Princess Moanna. The Academy has taken its fair share of hits over the years, failing to recognize the very best films and performances each year, especially when it comes to people of color. #OscarsSoWhite highlights the absence of all talents that fail to get cited, despite much of Black actors and actresses’ conversation. While Black representation in the acting categories is abysmal, Latinx representation has even worse numbers.
The last Latinx actor to be rewarded in an acting category was Benicio del Toro 20 years ago for his supporting role as Javier Rodriguez in Steven Soderbergh’s “Traffic.” Only seven Latinos have been nominated on the film side of things at the Screen Actors Guild awards in its 25-year history, with del Toro being the only Latino to have ever won (Jharrel Jerome and America Ferrera are the only Latinx actors to win Emmys for television performances).

Feedback is a horror thriller from director Pedro C. Alonso. Alsono has previously worked on a couple of shorts. His latest was shot in Spain and involves a late night radio show. On the show, two armed men take over the studio, capturing hostages. Now, the show host must read from a pre-planned script, if he wants to live. Written by Alberto Marini, Feedback stars: Eddie Marsan (Deadpool 2), Anthony Stewart Head ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Paul Anderson, Ivana Baquero and Richard Brake. Now, a few U.S. release details are available, via Breaking Glass Pictures. Breaking Glass Pictures is a U.S. based distributed. Based in Philadelphia, this film fan has seen Bgp release dozens of titles - over the years. Focusing on a diverse list of titles, their latest looks to bring a very London story to North America, this February 18th. On February 18th, Feedback will be available on DVD.

Writer/director Pedro C. Alonso takes a page that seems borrowed from "Black Mirror" for his feature film debut Feedback.
The great Eddie Marsan stars as Jarvis Dolan, the star and host of a successful London late-night radio show. On a night when he's about to break big news regarding Brexit and Russian interference live on his show, the studio is stormed, he is taken hostage and forced to present a script provided by the assailants while not letting on to the public that anything is wrong. Safe to assume, this is probably his worst night ever.
In addition to Marsan, the film also stars Paul Anderson ("Peaky Blinders") and Ivana Baquero ("The Shannara Chronicles").
From the trailer, it's hard to say whether this is going to be a mediocre thriller or so...

The feature film debut from writer and director Pedro C. Alonso, Feedback stars the excellent Eddie Marsan as Jarvis Dolan, a radio personality who encounters a terrible night when the station he works at is terrorised by a group of masked stalkers.
There’s something I get a real kick out of in film, be it survival horror, thriller or drama, is when we spend the length of the film in one single location. That is the case here, with Feedback, with the radio station as our single location. This strong setting along with a top notch cast go a long way into kicking things off strong. There’s a feeling of claustrophobia here, with the atmosphere, as this...

"Black Mirror meets Die Hard." Signature Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Feedback, a new film "from the creators of Rec and The Shallows." This film is actually the feature directorial debut of a Spanish filmmaker, and is about a radio star who experiences the worst night of his life when stalkers assault the radio station where he's working. It seems to be a contained thriller at a radio station when hooligans take over. Eddie Marsan stars as Jarvis Dolan, with a cast including Paul Anderson, Ivana Baquero, Richard Brake, Oliver Coopersmith, Alexis Rodney, Anthony Head, Alana Boden, and Nacho Aldeguer. It's next premiering at FrightFest in the UK coming up soon, which is what this trailer is promoting. This looks intense and terrifying - might be a good one. "You're on the air!" Here's the official UK trailer (+ poster) for Pedro C. Alonso's Feedback,...

Madrid — Netflix’s “High Seas,” its fourth Spanish Original Series, produced by “Velvet’s” Bambú Producciones, initiated rehearsals in October. Netflix has yet to announce an exact release date this year.
But, following on “Cable Girls,” Netflix’s first Spanish original and another Bambú production, “Elite,” and “Money Heist” (“La casa de papel”), expectation is high. Variety visited the set in late January and interviewed Bambú founder and lead writer Ramón Campos. Following, five takes on the upcoming Netflix Original:
1.Mystery And, As Always, Melodrama
Created by Campos and Gemma R. Niera, “High Seas” (“Alta Mar”) is set in the late 1940s on a luxury transatlantic liner carrying passengers from Spain to Brazil. A murder is committed – of a woman passenger not on the passenger list and whom no one remembers. Only one thing seems certain: The murderer cannot leave the ship. With producer-partner Teresa Fernández-Valdés, Campos broke out internationally...

Blue Fox Entertainment has boarded sales on thriller “Feedback” and kicked off the worldwide sales effort at the Efm. The thriller stars Eddie Marsan (“Ray Donovan”), Paul Anderson (“Peaky Blinders”) and Ivana Baquero (“Pan’s Labyrinth”).
Shot in the U.K. and Spain, the movie follows Jarvis Dolan (Marsan), the host of a successful late-night radio show. His whole life changes after armed men burst into the studio and take him and his entire show hostage, forcing them to read from a prefabricated script and exposing a scandal that could destroy Jarvis’ life.
“With the direction so many politically charged late-night radio and television shows have gone lately, ‘Feedback’ is an especially realistic and tense genre film, led by fantastic performances from Eddie Marsan and Paul Anderson,” said Blue Fox Entertainment’s head of international sales and acquisitions Lisa Gutberlet.

Will Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”) finally join his filmmaking friends Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu in the pantheon of Oscar winners this year? If our odds are to be believed, he’s a strong front-runner to snag Best Picture, Best Director, and maybe even Best Original Screenplay for his romantic fantasy about a mute janitor (Sally Hawkins) in love with a fish man. And just think, it was a little more than a decade ago, in 2007, that the Three Amigos of Cinema, as they like to be known, were competing alongside each other for their 2006 films “Babel” (Inarritu), “Children of Men” (Cuaron) and “Pan’s Labyrinth” (del Toro). Two of them were first-time Oscar nominees that year. Now, by March 4, they could all be Oscar winners.

Doug Jones can clearly recall his first day filming The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro's hand-crafted aquatic fairy tale in which the 57-year-old actor plays a nameless amphibian man who falls for Sally Hawkins' mute cleaning lady in 1960s Baltimore. "We started with a scene in which … I'm chained to a cement block on my knees and being tortured and prodded by Michael Shannon," Jones says. "My first day on set was going through the makeup and costume process, then ending up on my knees on concrete...

In his seven weeks of shooting “The Shape of Water,” the film’s male lead, Doug Jones, could not grasp a doorknob, send a text message, breathe through his mouth, or go to the bathroom while in costume. His call time to the Toronto set was a “mercifully short” three hours earlier than co-stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, and Octavia Spencer.

Guillermo del Toro’s filmography includes such acclaimed titles as “Cronos” and “Pan’s Labyrinth,” but the director tells Collider that he’s proudest of “The Shape of Water.” The filmmaker’s latest stars Sally Hawkins as a mute custodial worker who sparks a romance with an amphibious creature being tested on in a Cold War-era government facility. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and is widely expected to earn numerous Oscar nominations next year. The reception is extra sweet for del Toro since the drama is his “most favorite film.”

When we talk about Guillermo del Toro, we’re talking about “Pan’s Labyrinth.” That isn’t to slight the Mexican auteur’s eclectic filmography: Everything from “Cronos” and “The Devil’s Backbone” to the two “Hellboy” movies are as imaginative as they are involving, and advance word on “The Shape of Water” suggests it ranks among del Toro’s finest. But “Pan’s Labyrinth,” which has only grown in esteem since opening to widespread acclaim 11 years ago, is a distillation of its maker’s essence.

The world was first introduced to Ivana Baquero when she was just 11 years old, as the star of Guillermo del Toro’s dark fantasy fable, Pan’s Labyrinth. But now, the 23-year-old is all grown up, travelling the world and starring in Spike TV’s fantasy adventure series, The Shannara Chronicles.
“It's been 10 years, and for me, it's such a good opportunity to be able to be in a show like Shannara, which is such a big kind of American production,” Baquero told Et over the phone on Wednesday. “And growing up from Pan's Labyrinth and being in a show like this is very, very special for me.”
Before she went on to travel the world as an international star, Baquero grew up in Barcelona, where she began learning English at age three while attending The American School in Barcelona, and credits her bilingual skills for helping her pursue acting at a young age.
