“The longest [running] Black family drama on television leaves a legacy of knowing that these stories are worthy, knowing that there’s an audience for them,” declares producer/director DeMane Davis about the legacy that “Queen Sugar” will leave on the TV landscape. For our recent webchat she adds, “It’s not a show that has a lot of bells and whistles. It doesn’t need it because it has these faces. It has this skin. It has this hair and then it has these directors of photography,” she says, “who know how to light that skin, know how to get light into the eyes, so that you see the depths of someone and you see the layers. There’s nothing like this on television.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Christina Milian continues her streak of rom-coms at Netflix with the upcoming holiday movie “Meet Me Next Christmas.”
The project marks the actor and musician’s third collaboration with Netflix following her popular destination romances, 2021’s “Resort to Love” — which spent four weeks on the streamer’s global top 10 film list — and 2019’s “Falling Inn Love.”
Milian will executive produce and star in “Meet Me Next Christmas,” playing Layla, who, in pursuit of a fairytale romance with the man of her dreams, must race through New York City to get her hands on the hottest ticket in town: the sold out Pentatonix Christmas Eve Concert.
The film also stars Devale Ellis, Kofi Siriboe and Kalen Allen, alongside the Grammy-winning a capella group Pentatonix.
Directed by Rusty Cundieff, “Meet Me Next Christmas” is written by Molly Haldeman and Camilla Rubis. Mark Roberts is producing the project, while Simon Lythgoe and Matt Code executive produce alongside Milian.

Angela Bassett took home a pair of major honors at the 54th Annual NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night during a ceremony from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium that was telecast live on BET, earning three total: for Entertainer of the Year, film supporting actress for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and (prior to the live show) lead actress in a TV drama for Fox’s “9-1-1.” She shared top billing with Will Smith, who won his first major award since his infamous slap incident involving Chris Rock at last year’s Oscars: lead film actor for “Emancipation.”
Egot champ Viola Davis – snubbed this year at the Academy Awards – snared lead actress in a film for “The Woman King,” while “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was feted as Outstanding Motion Picture and Tenoch Huerta Mejia earned the film supporting actor prize for his role in “Black Panther.” Jalyn Hall won the Breakthrough...

The 54th NAACP Image Awards, which aired on CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Saturday night, has wrapped. Queen Latifah hosted the proceedings, which honored the best in Black entertainment for the proceeding year. Inclusive awards that they are, the Image Awards often give a hat-tip to performers of color who aren’t Black, though: Tenoch Huerta Mejía won Best Supporting Actor for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which also won Outstanding Motion Picture.
That film received another big award in the form of Best Supporting Actress for Angela Bassett, who is by far now the frontrunner for the Academy Award. It was one of two awards of the night for Bassett, as she also won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “9-1-1.”

After seven seasons, the Bordelon family’s journey came to an end. “Queen Sugar” signed off on Tuesday night with a poetic series finale centered around the importance of family — in all its forms.
Series creator Ava DuVernay wrote the finale, titled “For They Existed,” and returned to the director’s chair for the first time since helming the pilot and second episode.
In Variety’s Power of Women cover story celebrating the series’ legacy, the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker said she was “euphoric” about bookending the series as director and insisted she was wholly “satisfied” with the farewell ode.
“‘Queen Sugar’ is the longest commitment I’ve ever had — and we’re talking relationships too — and I did my very best every single day,” DuVernay explained, sitting alongside executive producer Oprah Winfrey. “In the end, there was no sadness; I was just so pleased, so proud. Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay are two of the creative leaders honored for Variety’s 2022 Power of Women presented by Lifetime. For more, click here.
Oprah Winfrey has spent most of her career talking, so it’s a little surprising that the only sound you hear from the porch of her second home in Maui is absolute silence. Forget about the ocean waves or rustling palm trees. Ok, if you’re lucky enough to hang with Oprah for an entire afternoon, this zen will be interrupted by the periodic squawking of wild roosters. In such a tranquil retreat, you can think clearly, cradled in the beauty of all that Hawaii has to offer.
It’s this very place of refuge, in fact, where Winfrey set a trap for filmmaker Ava DuVernay that would launch one of their greatest collaborations: OWN’s “Queen Sugar.”

When “Queen Sugar” star Dawn-Lyen Gardner’s Charley Bordelon was missing from the trailer and key art for Season 7 of the OWN drama series, fans questioned where the middle Bordelon sibling had gone.
When the footage debuted, Variety reported that Gardner would not be a series regular for the final season’s 13 episodes, noting that at the end of Season 6, the character made her reconciliation with estranged husband Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett) more official, accepting his remarriage proposal and planning to move back to Los Angeles. With the primary action of Season 7 taking place in the fictional Louisiana parish of St. Josephine, Charley’s storyline would instead be tracked in a number of episodes across the season.
But ahead of the debut of Tuesday’s season premiere, Gardner took to social media to explain that she “did not participate” in the making of the show’s final hours.

Even if last season’s finale of the OWN drama Queen Sugar ended on a high note, with the Bordelon land being declared a historical landmark (and keeping the villainous Landrys from taking it), it’s safe to assume there’s more drama to come in the seventh and final season, which kicks off September 6. The series, created by Ava DuVernay and based on the novel by Natalie Baszile, has put the Bordelon siblings — Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph-Angel (Kofi Siriboe) — through the paces over six seasons and we can only hope there’s a happy ending in store for them all once the series finale arrives later this fall. Wesley tells TV Insider that playing Nova all these years has taught her much in her own life. “She’s taught me self-care. That’s a big thing I’ve taken away, is just learning how to...

The comedy series Atlanta edges out all the competition with 11 nominations. Quinta Brunson and Abbott Elementary come in second with nine.
Walter Moseley garners four nominations for writing two episodes of the Apple TV+ series The Last Days of Ptolemy Gray and FX’s Snowfall. Donald Glover snags four nominations, for acting and writing one episode each and directing two episodes of the front-running Atlanta.
HBO (and HBO Max) dominates the competition this year by receiving a whopping 42 nominations. More than double the next nearest competitor, ABC with nineteen nominations. Netflix comes in third with 18 nominations. A grand total of seventeen different networks receive nominations this year, up four from last year.

In this week’s Insecure, Issa contemplated two very important career choices as lingering thoughts about Lawrence crept in.
Despite playing phone tag with her ex a few weeks ago, Issa kept her focus on her career and Nathan and both seem to be going quite well. Nathan has been leaving his belongings at her place, so much so that she joked “‘mi casa’ is starting to look like ‘we casa.’” Nathan casually floated the idea that they move in together, and Issa took it under consideration.

Isaiah (Kofi Siriboe) and Stevie (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) don’t meet cute in “Really Love.” They meet with understated beauty, at a time in their lives when ardor and connection will be tested by the dreams each has harbored for much of their lives. He’s a talented painter watching other art school classmates get representation and gallery shows. She’s in the last year of law school and sure to be courted by elite firms.
For her debut feature, director Angel Kristi Williams doesn’t make it easy on her protagonists. And her deliberateness of vision, trust in story and clear-eyed empathy suggest she’s a talent to keep track of. For their restrained yet smoldering performances, the two lead actors received a special jury acting prize at the 2020 SXSW film festival.
Stevie and Isaiah first connect at a gallery opening in front of a large painting of a woman.

“Queen Sugar” has been renewed for Season 7 at OWN, with that season set to be the show’s last. Writing on the new season has begun, with production set to begin in early 2022.
“To everything, there is a season,” said series creator Ava DuVernay. “And my producing partner Paul Garnes and I have had seven gorgeous seasons making ‘Queen Sugar’ with a remarkable cast and crew, alongside our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. Television. To write and produce seven seasons of a modern drama centered on a Black family is a radical act in our industry and a triumph that has far exceeded every hope I held. Now I feel strongly that the story, which began as a sunrise of a suggestion from Oprah, is ready for its sunset as a dream fully realized. ‘Queen Sugar’ has been one of the true joys of my career and my gratitude is buoyant and boundless.

Fans of Insecure definitely enjoyed seeing a new handsome face join the show's cast in its final season! Kofi Siriboe, aka passionate artist Crenshawn, was a pleasant surprise who popped up in the second episode of season five, and fans couldn't help but gush over his role. It hasn't been confirmed if he'll have a recurring part in the HBO series, but we certainly wouldn't mind him making a few more appearances before the season is over.
Though Kofi may be new to the world of Insecure, he's someone you may recognize as Ralph Angel Bordelon from OWN's Queen Sugar. He also made a huge splash playing the part of Jada Pinkett Smith's young love interest in the movie Girls Trip back in 2017. The Hollywood heartthrob has been a fan favorite for years now, so here's to hoping we see much more of him in the near future!

The greatest love story on Insecure isn’t between Issa and Lawrence — despite the desires of some fans who would love to see them together again.
No, it’s the bond between Issa and her bestie Molly that matters the most, and that’s why their fight and breakup in Season 4 hurt so much. But that’s water under the bridge now, because these two have always lifted each other up — especially when no one else would. This certainly was the case in Sunday night’s installment of the HBO comedy titled “Growth, Okay?”

One of the most endearing aspects of Davis’ reunion with the Bordelon brood in Season 6 of Queen Sugar was Hollywood’s prayer.
“We all know it’s been a hard year,” Hollywood said while blessing the family’s dinner in Episode 3 of the beloved OWN drama. “We lost a lot of people: friends, coworkers, mothers. But this year has also given us the opportunity to put stock in what’s important. To let go of what we need to let go of, hold tight to things that we want, and remember what matters the most.”

Gearing up for Tuesdays this fall? The TV lineup has something for everyone with titles like Queen Sugar, The Flash, The Bachelorette, and more returning. Below, we’re rounding up a few of the highly-anticipated titles. Queen Sugar Louisiana’s Bordelon family face life’s struggles together, which will be as necessary as ever in the drama’s sixth season. Stressed about his growing family with wife Darla (Bianca Lawson), Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) crosses moral (and legal) lines. “He wants to do whatever he can to provide for his unborn baby,” says producing director Lisa France. His outspoken sister, investigative journalist Nova (Rutina Wesley), “experiences some strong reactions to those she’s trying to expose,” France adds. At least impassioned sibling Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) is in a good place as she (secretly) romances her reformed ex-husband, Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett). In September of 2020, I came across a tweet from Felicia Pride about the premiere of her feature film, a romantic drama entitled Really Love. At the time, I'd known Pride for her short film Tender about two women having an intimate morning after a one night stand. What stopped me during this aimless social media scroll in particular, was the feature's poster. Actor Kofi Siriboe - who has actually taken my breath away in real life - was pictured embracing the utterly stunning Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing, whom I recognized from Mara Brock Akil's Love Is. I was immediately smitten.
Pride wrote, "So proud that Really Love is premiering at AFI Fest's Special Presentations. Filmmaking is not for the faint of heart. And this baby was determined to teach us all the things and challenge us like firstborns do. Grateful to have learned a different kind of perseverance and steadfastness to a mission bigger than you.
