Even before it premiered on Netflix in late May, the show “Tires” was renewed for a second season. Stand-up comedian Shane Gillis himself funded the project. Netflix acquired “Tires” as part of Gillis’s deal with them, and a new stand-up special will premiere sometime in 2025.

Netflix released Gillis’s first special, “Beautiful Dogs,” in 2023. The cast also includes Chris O’Connor, Kilah Fox, and Stavros Halkias. Andrew Schulz guest stars. Gillis co-created the series along with Gerben and John McKeever.

Tires had a promising debut weekend on Netflix.
Shane Gillis’ comedy series landed on the platform May 23, racking up 3.8M views in its first few days. That was good enough for seventh place on the streamer’s English-language TV charts.
Tires had some tough competition, as Bridgerton Season 3 had premiered with its first four episodes the week prior. Lady Whistledown was taking over the ton, once again, and all three seasons of the Shonda Rhimes series as well as prequel Queen Charlotte were on the list. Baby Reindeer is still making noise for the streamer as well, landing at No. 5 last week.
But, Tires was still tracking ahead of Bridgerton Season 3 on Netflix’s daily Top 10 throughout the weekend, indicating that the comedy series has the potential to gain much more traction. That means it is likely to grow its audience and possibly move its way up the Top 10 in the weeks to come.

At this month’s Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner each unveiled passion projects they opted to finance themselves after institutional backers initially passed. This week, three auteurs make a trend — except instead of putting his own funds toward a deeply personal, sweeping epic, comedian Shane Gillis has made a lewd, bro-y workplace comedy set at a Pennsylvania tire shop.
Since getting fired from “Saturday Night Live” — before he’d even started — for offensive jokes on his podcast, Gillis has become the poster child for a decentralized, grassroots attention economy that allows some entertainers to build thriving careers without gatekeepers’ blessings. His 2021 special “Live in Austin” blew up on YouTube; the same podcast that cost him “SNL,” co-hosted with fellow comic Matt McCusker, continues apace; Gillis even self-produced his own sketch comedy series, “Gilly and Keeves,” which culminated with a feature-length special last year. The new Netflix streaming comedy Tires is in the vein of single-camera sitcoms from Greg Daniels or Michael Schur. Yet, Tires is far from being on par with The Office or Parks and Recreation. In fact, this will probably be the first and last time the new Shane Gillis comedy is mentioned in the same breath as those classic sitcoms.
That’s because Tires is a poor imitation of those workplace comedies. At its worst, the new sitcom can be tedious, grating, and painfully unfunny. At its best, the series is something you have on in the background—a harmless, politically incorrect excursion. Yes, the jokes are on the hapless and clueless characters. However, that doesn’t make it good or mean its heart is in the right place.

Comedy Central’s latest development slate is diverse in more ways than one.
Not only has the cable network put together several new series with performers of color at the center, but the three shows picked up Tuesday by Comedy Central are all very different.
Ordered to series are the stand-up/musical show “The New Negroes,” the comedy game show “Taskmaster” and the scripted comedy “Corporate.” In development are shows from creators including Awkwafina, Neal Brennan, Arturo Castro, Franchesca Ramsey, Noël Wells and Flint Wainess, among others.
“The network when I got here was pretty traditionally targeted toward young white guys, both in terms of who the audience was and who was creating the shows for the audience,” said Comedy Central president Kent Alterman. “We started changing that a few years ago by expanding that into having funny women on the network, with Amy Schumer and Broad City and a lot more since.
