Exclusive: The Crown’s Imelda Staunton will lead a revival of the classic Jerry Herman-Michael Stewart Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! into the Andrew Lloyd Webber-owned London Palladium next summer.
Echoing words in composer and lyricist Herman’s titular number, the show’s producer Michael Harrison observed that “it’s so nice to have Imelda back on stage where she belongs.”
Directed by Dominic Cooke, the production — with Staunton playing matchmaker Dolly Levi — will begin performances at the Palladium on July 6 for a strictly limited 10-week season ending September 14.
The Palladium, designed by Frank Matcham, opened on a site close to Oxford Circus in 1910, the year King Edward VII died. It was to become a favorite venue of the Royal Family, often hosting the annual Royal Variety Show in the presence of the late Queen Elizabeth II, great-granddaughter of Edward VII.

The industry leaders, including Barbara Broccoli, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Edgar Wright, are calling for the UK government to “actively campaign to stop the violence used against the protesters in Iran, including an immediate stop to all executions” and “demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran.”
“Enough is enough. If the global community, which the UK is an active and influential member of, does not act firmly, these atrocities will continue,” the letter reads. “We need to sincerely support the people of Iran in their fight for justice and freedom.”

Game of Thrones may have concluded its story in a divisively pyrrhic fashion, but the franchise wasn’t exactly left in ashes, thanks to a backlog brimming with several spinoff shows supported by creator George R.R. Martin’s purportedly eight-figure, five-year deal recently signed with HBO. However, it appears that the mythology, adapted from Martin’s novels, is set to invade another arena, a Broadway stage, with a Game of Thrones play now in development. Interestingly, rather than rehashing the show, the play will instead showcase a heretofore unseen storyline crucial to the hit TV series.
The Great Tourney at Harrenhal will serve as the backdrop for the gestating Game of Thrones play, which will hail from producers Simon Painter and Tim Lawson (The Illusionists) in partnership with Kilburn Live, according to THR. Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the true-story The Courier, an entertaining Cold War-era spy tale told in a pleasingly classic style. Grounded by sterling performances by Cumberbatch and Merab Ninidze, from TV’s “McMafia,” this is a true story about an ordinary British citizen Greville Wynne (Cumberbatch) recruited by MI6 and the CIA to contact a high-level Soviet military intelligence colonel Oleg Penkovsky (Ninidze), and who ends up at a courier carrying intelligence back to London as the Cold War heats up, intelligence that proves crucial in the Cuban Missile Crisis. The two men form a unexpected friendship, bonding as family men who both want to avoid nuclear war, something the Russian colonel fears Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev is moving towards.

Disney’s animated adventure “Raya and the Last Dragon” led the domestic box office in its third weekend, illustrating the appeal of family films as Hollywood attempts to mount a moviegoing revival.
“Raya and the Last Dragon” collected $5.2 million from 2,261 theaters through Sunday, representing a scant 5% decline from its sophomore outing. Disney can thank the reopening of Los Angeles movie theaters for the stellar hold in ticket sales. Cinemas in the City of Angels were given permission to resume operations on March 12, but most film exhibitors weren’t able to get up and running until now.
Capacity in Los Angeles area movie theaters will be capped at 25%, or 100 people per auditorium, which is double the limit in New York, where its restricted to 50 people. Even with constraints, Los Angeles accounted for nearly 9% of all movie tickets sold this weekend, according to Comscore.

Just when you’d finished the dark and murky four-hour marathon that is HBO’s “Allen v. Farrow” docuseries, along comes Zack Snyder with a dark and murky four-hour director’s cut of “Justice League,” the super-friends reunion that underwhelmed critics and fans alike in its 2017 theatrical cut, now expanded/restored to Snyder’s full vision.
Personally, I found it fun for a while, then increasingly exhausting before giving up about midway through as a giant CG character with a hammerhead helmet and really shiny armor was growling something about Mother Boxes in what looked like a giant cavern, but might have been a spaceship. I don’t know, but my colleague Owen Gleiberman loved it — more than the Avengers movies — so if you’ve got an HBO Max subscription and four hours of your life to burn, give it a look.

Oscar-nominated actor, singer and songwriter Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”) will star in and produce a film based on the life of 19th century African princess Sarah Forbes Bonetta.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s spy drama “The Courier” that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year under the name “Ironbark” has been given a theatrical release date and a new title.
Lionsgate and its sister company Roadside Attractions will release the Cold War espionage film “The Courier” in theaters on August 28, 2020.
Dominic Cooke (“On Chesil Beach”) directs “The Courier” with a cast that also include Rachel Brosnahan and Merab Ninidze. It’s based on the true story of Greville Wynne (Cumberbatch), an unassuming British businessman who is recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. At the behest of the UK’s Mi-6 and a CIA operative (Brosnahan), he forms a covert, dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Ninidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.
