Zoya Akhtar (The Archies), Fawzia Mirza (Queen of My Dreams), and Roshan Sethi (A Nice Indian Boy) are set to join the 1497 Features Lab as Mentors.
Returning for its fourth year, the nonprofit 1497’s annual Features Lab will once again offer robust mentorship, script development, and industry access to elevate and advance the careers of screenwriters of South Asian descent. After expanding the Lab to a fully in-person format last year, this year’s program will build on that success with an intensive Retreat and subsequent Pitch Day. The Lab Retreat will take place this October 23-28, 2024 in Malibu.
The 1497 Features Lab, their signature impact program, entails three rounds of rigorous evaluation by independent Selection Committees to ultimately discover three Mentees to invest in. Each Mentee is then paired with a pod of Mentors – comprised of an established filmmaker, producer, industry representative, and a 1497 Features Lab Alum – from whom they...

Walking out of the theater after Ddlj, Jay (Jonathan Groff) launches into a defense of the over-the-top emotionality of Bollywood romances. “I think we’re all embarrassed by the bigness of love,” he declares. His date, Naveen (Karan Soni), is intrigued but skeptical, later recounting the interaction to his work bestie (Peter S. Kim) as a bit weird and kind of corny.
Because A Nice Indian Boy is a rom-com, though, it’s practically a given that Naveen will come around by the end. The film delights in public displays and grand gestures, such that it opens and closes on a pair of weddings. But its real strength lies in its sensitivity toward the messy feelings, smaller acts, and platonic and familial bonds that underlie those epic shows of romance. By the end, even those who don’t fancy themselves the sentimental type — as Naveen doesn’t, and I don...

I did not have Jonathan Groff singing “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam” on my 2024 bingo card. The Broadway actor humbly steps into Indian culture in Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy,” which repeatedly connects back to Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” — the film that originated “Tujhe Dekha”.
Written by Eric Randall (and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play), “A Nice Indian Boy” is all about subverting stereotypes about Indian culture, both within and outside of the community. The title itself is a cheeky twist on every aunty’s favorite refrain: that when a girl is of the right age, she or her family will find her a “nice Indian boy” to settle down with.
This time, however, protagonist Naveen (Karan Soni) is the one planning to bring home a nice Indian boy, which is probably not what all those aunties were picturing. But “A Nice Indian Boy” delights in defying expectations,...

It’s safe to say that Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Even a dual strike from the writers’ and actors’ unions couldn’t slow this new exciting entry down. The comic book frenemy rivalry between Deadpool and Wolverine of the X-Men was only hinted at with actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman taking friendly jabs at each other. Now that Disney has acquired Fox and the entire X-Men film franchise, the Merc with a Mouth’s inauguration into the MCU is going to be a crazy universe-bending ride. However, before Disney made its purchase and the Deadpool franchise was planning its third film outside of Marvel Studios, series co-star Karan Soni revealed the original story was a Christmas adventure.

Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) is a fist-bumping, cocky, and beloved senior resident at Chastain Memorial. He know the ropes, he knows the rules and how to break them… he knows just about everything. And to Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal), one of the hospital’s baby-faced and optimistic new residents, it’s terrifying. While other residents seem to be rolling with the punches, Devon feels like he’s been put in the ring for a fight he can’t win. Then there’s Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood), a community hero — and Devon’s idol — who seemingly can do no wrong. But that might be because there’s a bit of a medical malpractice cover-up going on…
In The Resident, from creators Amy Holden Jones (Mystic Pizza), Hayley Schore (Call Jane), and Roshan Sethi (Call Jane), Devon learns the hard way what hospital life is really like.

If you’d like to see the world’s saddest math equation, just watch “World’s Best.” After being given a lighthearted “equation of me” homework assignment on the first day of school, 12-year-old Prem Patel (Manny Magnus) formulates the following: Prem = (mom + dad) x math + Jerome – dad.” A math whiz still reeling from the loss of his father, Prem proves easy to root for as he navigates adolescence in “7 Days” director Roshan Sethi’s coming-of-age dramedy. But while the Disney+ original ultimately receives a passing grade, it doesn’t exactly ace the assignment the way its protagonist so often does.
Prem’s ostensible nemesis as he prepares for the upcoming Mathlympics competition is fellow math genius Claire (Piper Wallace), who literally haunts his stress dreams and proudly declares that her family “doesn’t celebrate summer” after being asked how she spent the last three months, while his best friend...

"The Resident" season 6 ended its relatively short run back in January, but Fox waited a long time to weigh in on the fate of the long-running series. At long last, it has been confirmed that this is the end for Conrad Hawkins and the rest of the staff at Chastain Memorial Hospital. Yes, sad to say for fans of the show, it will not be returning for a seventh season, so the season 6 finale will ultimately serve as the series finale.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has officially canceled the medical show after six full seasons and 107 episodes. The series was produced by 20th Century Television and was created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi. It's worth pointing out that "The Resident" season 6 was the shortest in the show's history at just 13 episodes, and that may have, in hindsight, been a bit of writing on the wall.

In one of the stranger coincidences of the 2022-23 TV season, two medical dramas said their goodbyes on Tuesday — New Amsterdam on NBC and The Resident on Fox. It was a series finale for the former; as much as creator/showrunner David Schulner and Executive Producer Peter Horton didn’t think their five-year-old series should be canceled, they had enough time to plan a hopeful ending for the Ryan Eggold starrer.
After six seasons on Fox, The Resident hasn’t been canceled … yet. But Tuesday’s finale dubbed “All Hands On Deck” had all the makings of a final farewell. Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) got his happy ending by declaring his love for Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas). Dr. Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy) came clean about his drug addiction and got to keep his job at Chastain Memorial after saving young Sammie, the granddaughter of Dr. Bell (Bruce Greenwood...

In an effort to save her own life, Joy’s journey for a solution leads her to Virginia (Sigourney Weaver), an independent visionary fiercely committed to women’s health, and Gwen (Wunmi Mosaku), an activist who dreams of a day when all women will have access to abortion, regardless of their ability to pay. Joy is so inspired by their work, she decides to join forces with them in “Call Jane.”

Roadside Attractions’ Call Jane is teaming with local and national abortion care providers on screenings of the film, as well as other supporting organizations on star-fronted PSAs, to help encourage education and awareness around abortions.
Out in theaters Friday, the Elizabeth Banks-led, ’60s-set story follows Joy, a suburban wife and mother who turns to the real-life, Chicago-based underground abortion care network The Janes, who supported access to abortion care during the women’s liberation movement and before Roe v. Wade.
The film and its partners, including the Planned Parenthood Federation of America — which also served in a collaborative role on the film to ensure it reflects the realities of barriers to abortion access — and Abortion Care Network’s KeepOurClinics.org campaign, will screen the Phyllis Nagy-directed film with dozens of American clinics.

This review was originally posted for the film’s world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
Wishes aren’t decisions, decisions aren’t actions, and actions aren’t a given, especially where rights are concerned. Women intrinsically know this struggle — not just for choice itself, but for what choosing entails — and Oscar-nominated “Carol” screenwriter Phyllis Nagy incisively, humanely explores that in her gripping, personable drama “Call Jane,” the story of a suburban Chicago housewife (Elizabeth Banks) encountering an underground network of women facilitating safe abortions in the years before Roe v. Wade.
The Janes were real, an activist collective operating illegally but diligently to help pregnant women from all walks of life through a very particular hardship, and their incredible story is the subject of a documentary (“The Janes”) that’s also premiering at this year’s Sundance. But what makes Nagy’s dramatization the perfect complement to testimony-driven non-fiction...

Elizabeth Banks says she thinks she could perform an abortion after working on her latest project Call Jane.
The Phyllis Nagy-directed, Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi co-written film about the Janes, an underground abortion care network that operated out of Chicago during the late ’60s and early ’70s, sees Banks starring as a suburban housewife who seeks out abortion care after learning her second pregnancy could threaten her life.
While speaking to Vanity Fair about the movie, which releases in theaters Oct. 28, the actress, director and producer opened up about what she learned while filming. That includes how she learned, like her character, to perform an abortion. It is something she now says she thinks she “might be able to, actually,” though there are a few catches.

Last week’s L.A. premiere of “Call Jane” doubled as a benefit for the local chapter of Planned Parenthood, and with the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade on many attendees’ minds, speakers such as Gloria Allred, Sigourney Weaver and Elizabeth Banks urged those in the audience to vote for pro-choice candidates in the upcoming election. But for producer Robbie Brenner, Roadside Attractions’ Oct. 28 release of “Call Jane” also marks the end of a seven-year journey to get the indie film into theaters.
Now executive VP of Mattel’s film division, Brenner boarded the project — which traces a Chicago housewife’s political awakening following a back-alley abortion in 1968 — when “Call Jane” producer Kevin McKeon handed her the 2017 Black List script by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi. Vertigo Releasing has acquired Phyllis Nagy’s “Call Jane,” starring Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver, for U.K. and Ireland distribution.
The film explores the true story of the Janes, an underground collective of women, who in Chicago during the 1960s, came together to secretly provide nearly 12,000 women and girls with safe and secure abortions. It follows Joy (Banks), a suburban wife, and mother to a smart teenage daughter, whose happy life is derailed when her much wanted pregnancy becomes life threatening.
The cast also includes Chris Messina and Kate Mara.
The film had a stellar festival run, including play dates at Sundance and Berlin. It is written by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi and produced by Robbie Brenner, David Wulf and Kevin McKeon.
Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Peter Debruge wrote: “The female empowerment message comes through loud and clear in ‘Call Jane,’ especially in Banks’ performance.”

Even though her own life depended on it, Elizabeth Banks’ character Joy had to search for an underground abortion clinic to end her possibly fatal pregnancy in the upcoming movie Call Jane. On Tuesday, Roadside Attractions released the official trailer for the 1960s-set film, which is based on true events and follows a housewife named Joy as she fights to get an abortion and joins the Jane Collective. And boy… is the film timely.

In the first trailer for the drama, Call Jane, Elizabeth Banks plays a woman whose dangerous pregnancy leads her to seek an illegal abortion as she ultimately joins forces with the underground Jane collective in 1968 Chicago.
The film, which premiered at Sundance, has become even more timely since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion and allowing states to regulate the procedure.
Directed by Phyllis Nagy and inspired by true events, Call Jane stars Banks as suburban housewife Joy, whose pregnancy leads to a life-threatening heart condition. Told that the only treatment is “to not be pregnant” but facing barriers to that procedure, Joy stumbles across an ad for Jane, the clandestine Chicago group that helped women obtain safe, affordable abortions in the late ’60s and early ’70s when the procedure was a crime in Illinois and other states.

‘Call Jane’ Trailer: Elizabeth Banks Joins an Underground Abortion Ring in Pre-Roe Era Drama (Video)
In the first trailer for “Call Jane,” it’s 1968 in Chicago, and Elizabeth Banks has just learned that she has only a 50 chance to live if she were to give birth. While her doctor recommends an emergency termination to the pregnancy to save her life, a medical board of men all votes “no” in performing the procedure and lets her know to her face.
“I’m here, I’m right here,” Banks says feebly in front of this body of men that barely notices her.
That’s the set up for this pre-“Roe v. Wade” era drama called “Call Jane,” which tells the true story of a group of women who lead an underground movement designed to help women get abortions they desperately need. The film shows how Banks goes from a woman in need to a woman on the front lines of the abortion fight.

The early pandemic romance tales were anxious productions, desperate to capture (and capitalize on) the uncertainty of the coronavirus ravaging the globe. They were reflections of the moment, a set of breathless drafts. Nearly three years into the far-from-over virus, attitudes about it have changed and so, I suspect, have standards for the pandemic love story.
Katie Holmes’ second feature Alone Together marks a new chapter for this burgeoning subgenre, with hindsight loosening the grip of over-sentimentality (though the film does not entirely escaping cloying tendencies). Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, this disarming romantic comedy operates best as a time capsule of how wealthy New Yorkers experienced the weeks in March and April 2020, when the city shut down and panic set in. Those were the days of hunting down hand sanitizer, spraying groceries with disinfectant and listening to then-Governor Andrew Cuomo’s...

It’s an upfronts miracle: Fox and 20th Television have closed Season 6 renewals of 9-1-1 and The Resident for the 2022-23 season.
I hear the negotiations were completed shortly before the Fox upfront presentation’s 4 p.m. Et start. The two shows, both in their fifth seasons, were featured briefly in the presentation’s opening montage, but the previously renewed 9-1-1: Lone Star was mentioned in the opening remarks by Fox head of sales Marianne Gambelli. There were no specific reference to 9-1-1 and The Resident since the Fox presentation had been pre-taped, so no last-minute tweaks were possible.
As Deadline had been reporting over the weekend, renewal negotiations on both shows went down to the wire and could not close by Sunday night for 9-1-1 and The Resident to be included in Fox’s 2022-23 content slate release sent out Monday morning.

The Covid-19 pandemic spawned its own genre of sorts: the quarantine film, which examines the bizarre, disorienting early days of the crisis as people confined themselves to their homes. In this realm of sometimes heavy movies, one of the lightest and most charming is “7 Days,” which uses this setup for an opposites-attract rom-com.
Karan Soni and Geraldine Viswanathan star as Ravi and Rita, two polar opposites who are set up on a pre-arranged date by their traditional Indian families in early March, 2020. The date goes extremely poorly, but the two are forced to quarantine together for the first few days of the pandemic in Rita’s home, and as they spend more time together, they slowly develop a genuine friendship that shows the potential to blossom into something more.

It wasn’t until Karan Soni was getting ready to premiere “7 Days” at Tribeca Film Festival that he asked himself, “What did we make?”
Not even a year prior, he and his partner – director Roshan Sethi – conceived of the idea for a romantic comedy about twentysomething Indian Americans Ravi (Soni) and Rita (Geraldine Viswanathan), whose pre-arranged date goes from bad to worse when they’re forced to spend a week quarantining together.
In just five days, Soni and Sethi whipped together a script and got to work assembling a cast and crew, getting the Duplass Brothers to produce and choosing an Airbnb for the set. True to its title, the film took about a week to shoot. No wonder Soni hadn’t had a chance to catch his breath.
Ironically, the hyperspeed project was born from a period of soul-crushing inertia. In June 2020, the actor found himself in the midst of a Covid-induced crisis.

7 Days has been on the festival circuit for some time, and has ben charming audiences along the way. The movie, shot during the initial lockdown, has finally been released in theaters in the US, and to mark the occasion, we spoke lead actor Karan Soni, and director Roshan Sethi, who also co-wrote the screenplay together.
We discuss cultural sensitivity, and how important it is to be authentic when writing and depicting traditions on screen. The pair, who are also an item, talk about their collaboration process, and also what it was about lead actress Geraldine Viswanathan that made her the perfect choice for the role. They look over arranged marriages, Covid, and they look back on the imprint the Duplass brothers have had on indie cinema, as they served as producers on this production.

‘7 Days,’ Written and Directed by a Doctor, Is a Touching Pandemic Rom-Com That Actually Shows Covid
Most movies about the pandemic have not directly addressed the actual illness of Covid-19, but most movies aren’t written and directed by real-life doctors. Over the last two years, independent filmmakers have risen to the challenges presented by smaller crews and daily testing, producing inventive takes on remote learning like “Language Lessons,” or provocative livestream thrillers like “Deadstream” and “Dashcam.”
But few have managed to show a character suffering from the effects of Covid, much less in a romantic comedy. Shot in a single location with a two-person cast and set during the first week of the pandemic, “7 Days” is a snappy and scrappy rom-com that doesn’t shy away from the human cost of Covid.
That’s entirely due to director and co-writer Roshan Sethi, who moonlights as an oncologist at one of the country’s top hospitals for nine weeks out of the year.

A24’s SXSW opener Everything Everywhere All At Once, Bleecker Street’s Infinite Storm and Sony Pictures Classics’ Mothering Sunday offer something that’s been rare of late at the specialty box office, fresh content and choice.
They’re in a market with only one new studio wide release, Paramount’s The Lost City with Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock. And if that film does okay it’s a nice win for everyone, said a specialty distribution executive, since it appeals to an older and female demo that’s been hard to win back to theaters. He’s got fingers crossed that the variant of the Omicron variant won’t make a new dent in the very slowly reviving market for non-superhero films. He and others have noted week after week that no specialty recovery is really possible in any case without the consistent flow of new content that we’re just starting to see.

Rita and Ravi have exactly one thing in common: tTheir traditional Indian families are eager to set them up with a suitable spouse, Asap. Ravi (Karan Soni) is all-in on the idea, zipping through first date after first date, tracking his possible paramours with a meticulous spreadsheet, perpetually ready to float the idea that he wants three kids, and does his maybe-Mrs. want three too? Rita (Geraldine Viswanathan) is less amped on the idea, putting up with her mother’s demands because otherwise she’s likely to close the purse strings, leaving Rita out on her ass. Does she want three kids? Dude, Rita doesn’t know what she wants.

"You don't need to be married to cuddle with someone." That's true! Cinedigm has revealed the trailer for 7 Days, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Roshan Sethi. This premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival last year and it just won for Best First Feature at the 2022 Indie Spirit Awards. As if their pre-arranged date, organized by their traditional Indian parents, wasn't uncomfortable enough, Ravi and Rita are forced to shelter in place together as Covid-19's reach intensifies. Ravi and Rita seemingly have nothing in common. The situation turns both awkward and enlightening when they find themselves trapped inside together for a week. Starring Geraldine Viswanathan and Karan Soni. It's executive produced by the Duplass Brothers, who are some of the best supporters of up-and-coming indie filmmakers. This looks really sweet! And awkwardly fun. Even though it's yet another pandemic comedy about being stuck together. Here's the official US...

2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards: ‘The Lost Daughter’ Takes the Top Prize (Complete Winners List)
The 37th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out Sunday at the Santa Monica Pier, with comedy power couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally serving as hosts.
There weren’t too many surprises throughout the night. Troy Kotsur won the first award of the evening, Best Supporting Male Actor for “Coda,” very much as predicted. Taylour Paige took home Best Female Lead Actor, for “Zola,” while Simon Rex, of “Red Rocket,” walked away with Best Male Lead. Ruth Negga won Best Supporting Female Actor for “Passing,” beating out Jessie Buckley from “The Lost Daughter.”
But Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante book won the three other categories in which it was nominated — Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Feature — and was the night’s biggest victor. Gyllenhaal gave three effusive thank you speeches, spreading her appreciation around to her cast, crew, financiers, publicist, husband and mother. “Women in film!
