The history of Hollywood adapting video games in movies and TV shows has been a little spotty, to say the least, but in recent years, I think the tide has been turning. With shows like The Last of Us and Fallout, video game fans have developed a little hope to see their favorite adapted into a great piece of art and while there will still be wasted efforts like Netflix’s The Witcher and Paramount+’s Halo, they are still only two shows. So, in keeping with that spirit of hope we created a list of the 10 best TV shows that were adapted from video games, they can be original stories in the world of video games but they have to be connected to the original IP.

Ufotable’s Demon Slayer may have a lot of defining moments that make the anime series one of the best of all time, but a major part of the credit for the success of the series should ideally go to the voice actors of Demon Slayer, who managed to capture the emotions of intense characters like Tanjiro, Nezuko, Rengoku, Zenitsu, etc.
Nezuko and Tanjiro in Demon Slayer | Ufotable
Voicing such prominent characters can be difficult as they often end up in dire situations, and the entire focus is on them. Therefore, even a small mistake can affect the character and the voice actor’s image. Be it Japanese dubbing or any other language, the stress on the voice is similar for every voice artist who is working on the series.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).
Unlike the live action and fictional program nominees, which are chosen by all 20,000 plus academy members, the Best Character Voice-Over contenders are picked only by voters...

Television is going full fan boy for video game adaptations.
Earlier this month, Amazon greenlit a new series based on award-winning PlayStation game God of War, with Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby on board.
HBO’s The Last of Us, a hotly-anticipated small-screen version of the 2013 action-adventure game from Naughty Dog and Sony, created by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, one of the game’s original directors, drops Jan. 15.
They join a long list of game-to-series adaptations, from Halo (Paramount+) to Twisted Metal (Peacock) and Horizon (Netflix). Alongside God of War, Amazon is also moving forward with its TV version of post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout, being adapted by Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan.
All of the adaptations hope to capitalize on the games’ devoted base of hard core fans. But Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the hit anime series...

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The series: "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners"
Where you can stream it: Netflix
The pitch: "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is an original anime collaboration between CD Projekt Red ("The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt") and Studio Trigger, an anime production company that's become known for their high-intensity action sequences. The series follows all-new characters set in the same world as the "Cyberpunk 2077" video game from CD Projekt Red, following their adventures as cyberpunk "edgerunners" living on the fringes of society in the futuristic Night City. The series focuses on David (voiced by Kenn in the Japanese version and Zach Aguilar in the English version), who faces a choice between living (and probably dying) as a cyberpunk, or trying to make a life for himself by kissing up and following the rules.

“Do all of you remember the name Red Ribbon Army?” That’s the first of many lines of expository dialogue in “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” the latest animated action-fantasy adaptation-extension of the mega-popular “Dragon Ball” manga comics.
That opening line of voiceover narration also inadvertently prepares viewers for how convoluted the movie soon becomes.
Some tablesetting dialogue explains who the Red Ribbon Army are (bad guys) and why they’re back. The son of the Red Pharmaceutical Company’s founder, Magenta (voiced by Volcano Ota in the Japanese-language version and Charles Martinet in the English dub), wants to take over the world. But soon enough, this fairly straightforward beat-em-up spectacular, which pits heroic aliens against villainous robots, becomes a celebration of “Dragon Ball,” a decades-old anime institution.

More riches are coming exhibitors’ way, particularly during the late summer dry period, as Crunchyroll and Toei Animation are releasing the next Dragon Ball movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, on Aug. 19 in the U.S. and Canada at 2,300 theaters and select Imax venues.
The only other new wide release in theaters at that time is Universal’s Idris Elba movie, Beast. Super Hero is getting a further global blast around the world at the same time.
These Crunchyroll movies are big one weekend cash cows, whereby all the fans come out in one swoop. Rival studios marvel at how Crunchyroll pulls this off, largely without a national TV campaign; dialing into and engaging their fanbase to leave the house. The last Dragon Ball Super: Broly posted a 6-day MLK opening of 22.3M, yet finaled at 30.7M. Worldwide, the pic did 115.7M.
