For two years in a row, Deepika Padukone has kickstarted India’s box office with a bang: In 2023, the acclaimed actor and producer reunited with her Om Shanti Om co-star Shah Rukh Khan for espionage actioner Pathaan, which went on to take $76 million in India and crossed the $100 million global box office milestone without a China release. This year Padukone starred in Viacom/Marflix’s Hindi aviation actioner Fighter (from Pathaan director Siddharth Anand), which grossed $43 million globally in just 30 days.
“Of course, the success of a movie is important, and box office is important, and the awards and accolades are important, but for me, as a person, the time I’ve had with people and the experiences I have on the set of a film are the most important,” Padukone says.

Meghna Gulzar has cemented her place as a sensible female director in recent years. While Talvar led her to the limelight boosted by critical acclaim, it is her previous film – “Raazi” that secured her place in the big league of directors. The Irrfan Khan-starrer “Talvar” showed her skills to dwell in the nitty-gritty of a complex incident. Its Rashomon-Esque nature takes you back to the same situations over and over while getting even deeper into the infamous murder case. Despite having control over the emotions in the film, she largely builds it on the delicate and fallible human nature and its grounded depiction. Thus, the film goes beyond the scope of its central narrative and often becomes cathartic for the viewers.

Amazon Studios released Les Misérables gripping police brutality drama and despite being a Cannes Jury Prize winner, recent Golden Globe nomination and being France’s official Oscar entry for Best International Feature, the film opened to a disappointing low, earning an estimated $24,414 in its four runs in New York and Los Angeles.
It seems that the awards season boost and critical acclaim couldn’t give the foreign-language film the push it needed for a strong theatrical opening. The film stars Damien Bonnard, Alexis Manenti and Djebril Zonga and marks filmmaker Ladj Ly’s directorial debut. The timely drama has nothing to do with the popular musical but is inspired by the real-life riots that occurred in the suburbs of Paris in 2005, a story that hits close to home for Ly as these riots had a long-lasting effect on his neighborhood, Montfermeil.

There’s a scene late in “Chhapaak,” writer-director Meghna Gulzar’s stirringly crafted and intelligently uplifting fact-based drama, where Malti (Deepika Padukone), the survivor of a horrific assault, tentatively expresses her warm feelings to Amol (Vikrant Massey), the crusading activist who has taken up the cause of women who have suffered similar attacks. But, true to form for this fiery idealist, Amol gruffly interrupts her romantic overtures. “This stuff,” he insists, “belongs in the movies.”
It’s tempting to read the exchange as Gulzar’s meta commentary on her own movie, which scrupulously avoids the emotional and stylistic extremes that, for better or worse, have come to define much of contemporary Indian cinema (and not just for Western audiences).
To put it another way: There are no lavish production numbers, no exhilarating romantic interludes, no slo-mo acrobatics of any sort — and only two songs, neither of which are sung by anyone onscreen.

Amazon is set to open Les Misérables in limited release this week, but if you’re expecting a musical based on the Victor Hugo novel, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Directed by Ladj Ly, the film only shares a name with the popular Broadway musical. The drama tackles the issue of police brutality in France, showing that this is a super relevant issue not only in the United State but all over the world.
Based on Ly’s 2017 short film, Les Misérables is inspired by the riots that occurred in the suburbs of Paris in 2005. The story hits close to home for Ly as these riots had a long-lasting effect on his neighborhood, Montfermeil. The film follows Stephane (Damien Bonnard) who joins an anti-crime squad in Montfermeil after relocating. As he works with Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Zonga), Stephane struggles with defusing the tense relationships between the resident gangs.

ReviewThe subject of the film may be depressing but director Meghna Gulzar handles it with sensitivity.Sowmya RajendranWhenever an acid attack occurs, the public’s interest lies in viewing the woman’s Before and After photos. However sympathetic the gaze, the attention becomes voyeuristic; the horror the attack inspires in us is proportional to how much of the woman’s beauty has been erased. Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak, which is based on the real life story of Laxmi Agarwal, makes an important choice by not beginning with Malti (Deepika Padukone) as she was before the attack. Instead, we’re introduced to her as a young woman who’s desperate for a job because her disfigured face has made it impossible for her to get one. This immediately breaks down to the audience a survivor’s reality. The attack goes beyond impacting appearance and marriage prospects; it threatens their ability to...

Noted director Meghna Gulzar of critically acclaimed films like Talvar and Raazi has turned her focus to a new tale. Starring Deepika Padukone, Chhapaak is a film that looks at acid violence through the lens of the real life story of Acid survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
To set the stage here is the trailer
In Chhapaak, Deepika plays Malti, a young girl who comes from a humble, unprivileged background. Malti was attacked with acid on a street in New Delhi, in 2005. Her assailant was a man twice her age, whose advances Malti had clearly declined. Through Malti’s story, the film makes an attempt to understand the on-ground consequences of surviving an acid attack in India, the medico-legal social state of affairs that transpire after the acid has been hurled and the face is irreparably burnt.
Meghna Gulzar talked with Stacey about making Chhapaak, the experience of working with Deepika Padukone and so much more.

Actress Deepika Padukone does not consider her upcoming release "Chhapaak" to be a risky project, despite the fact that she plays the central role of an acid attack survivor in the real life-inspired film.
"People are saying that we have taken a big risk, but I don't think of this (film) as a risk. It is something that she (the film's director Meghna Gulzar) has lived with for so many years. As a human being and a director, she was ready to tell the story. She came to me with it and I instantly said yes to the film, so there hasn't been over-thinking or over-processing. I think whatever we have done to make this film was done very instantly and instinctively, and with a lot of heart. Acid attacks on women by spurned men are endemic in South Asia. Top Indian actor Deepika Padukone is debuting as a producer and headlining the cast of Disney-owned Fox Star Studios’ “Splash” (“Chhapaak”), a film that deals with the issue.
India’s Hindi-language film industry, known popularly — or pejoratively, depending on your point of view — as Bollywood, has very few women producers. Among the better known are actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas (“Ventilator”), Ekta Kapoor (“Dolly Kitty and Those Twinkling Stars”), Ashi Dua (“Ghost Stories”) and Krishika Lulla (“NH10”). Padukone, however, is loath to bring gender into the equation.
“I’ve turned producer because I want to enable some of the films that I do,” she tells Variety. “I’m not doing it because I’m a woman. At one of these press conferences, they spoke about ‘Splash’ being a female-centric film, for example. No, I’m not doing this film because it is female-centric.
