Forget the horror films of 2019 — was there anything scarier than that first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer, featuring a disturbingly toothy rendition of the video game hero? It created such an outcry that the film was bumped to February 2020; thankfully, you’ve got a lot of other choices re: what to check out this month at the movies, from a supervillainess getting her moment in the spotlight to a few fresh literary adaptations, an ingenious new take on a classic Universal monster-movie staple and an A-list American remake of a Swedish black comedy.

Documentary filmmaker Emma Sullivan was already there when inventor Peter Madsen’s submarine, the UC3 Nautilus, went missing off the coast of Copenhagen in August 2017, with journalist Kim Wall on board. Sullivan had been filming Madsen, a hobbit-y egotist with electric blue eyes, for 18 months, and until that day, she believed she was making a film about his attempt to blast into space on a scrappy, self-made rocket, with the help of a dozen unpaid volunteers who believed in his charismatic Diy hustle. Madsen is found and flashes a thumbs up to Sullivan’s camera. But Wall isn’t — and the documentary turns into a rare opportunity to study a murderer before his first kill.
“Into the Deep” is structured into two timelines. The first kicks off with Madsen’s team frantically hoping to find its hero alive, and from there sloshes through the drip of information as the killer...

The first trailer for Emma shows an urgent sense of dark humor as Anya Taylor-Joy becomes one of Jane Austen's most devious heroines.
Jane Austen stories can sometimes be reduced by the uncritical eye (or bad adaptation) to romantic angst. But while it is true that Austen heroines have their fair share of lovelorn anguish, at the heart of Austen’s prose is usually a sharp social critic and even sharper satirist. And her wit was rarely deadlier than in Emma, the literary novel about a young woman who plays matchmaker in her village to often disastrous results. There is certainly a humorous edge emerging from the new movie adaptation starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Nighy, and Josh O’Connor.
The new film from director Autumn de Wilde appears intent on having a wicked sensibility judging from the new trailer, which soars to the strings of Vivaldi’s violin concerto “Summer.

A new movie adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma is coming, and we have our first look at what to expect from this classic with a twist, which stars actress Anya Taylor-Joy as the eponymous Miss Woodhouse. If the new trailer is anything to go by, the success of irreverent period drama The Favourite has been a huge influence, with director Autumn de Wilde putting plenty of emphasis on the comedic aspects of the story.
Emma is often regarded as one of Austen's sillier works, something which no doubt explains its influence on popular culture - lest we forget, Clueless is a modern retelling of the story, which focuses on a beautiful, rich, spoiled young woman intent on matchmaking all her friends. Joining Taylor-Joy are a whole host of British stars, including Josh O'Connor (aka The Crown's new Prince Charles), Bill Nighy, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald star Callum Turner,...

It was the final book that was published while Jane Austen was alive back in 1815, and now over 200 years later, we receive yet another version of “Emma” adapted for the big screen (you may remember the 90s version with a young Gwyneth Paltrow). The film is directed by photographer-turned-filmmaker Autumn de Wilde, in what will be her feature-length directorial debut. She has previously worked on short films, including “The Postman Dreams” for Prada, as well as music videos for artists such as Elliott Smith, Jenny Lewis, Spoon, Florence + The Machine.de Wilde is also known for her indie-rock photography, gracing the pages of Spin and Rolling Stone often, while helping shape the visual photographic identity of artists like Elliott Smith and Beck among many others.

If you’re looking to cast a period piece, Anya Taylor-Joy has increasingly become the one to call. She broke out of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival with Robert Eggers’ searing horror folktale “The Witch” as the sexually repressed elder sister in an excommunicated New England family. She starred in the PBS miniseries “The Miniaturist” as a 17th-century New Amsterdam woman bewitched by dollhouses. And she starred in the recent season of the gangster period epic “Peaky Blinders.”
Taylor-Joy returns in 2020 as Jane Austen heroine Emma Woodhouse in music-video director turned first-time filmmaker Autumn de Wilde’s “Emma,” which Focus Features will release on February 21. Austen’s beloved comedy about finding your equal and earning your happy ending is reimagined in this new film adaptation, with a script from Eleanor Catton. Watch the first teaser trailer below.

She may share a last name (and genes) with the hottest woman in showbiz, but Isobel Waller-Bridge is a fiery talent in her own right. Not only has the musician and composer scored both seasons of her sister Phoebe’s 11-time Emmy-nominated “Fleabag,” she’s lent her melodic ear to an episode of “Black Mirror,” scored the entirety of BBC One’s “The Split,” as well as Amazon’s critically lauded “Vanity Fair” limited series. The streaming behemoth that is Netflix may offer a home to everything from black-and-white foreign-language Oscar winners to ’80s-era throwbacks about plucky preteens battling monsters, but there’s one area in which it has truly excelled: the rom-com. After a few years out of fashion, it may actually be that Netflix is the one saving the genre, or at least reminding viewers just how much fun it can be to watch two nice people fall in love against a backdrop of misadventures and hijinks.
From modern classics like “Emma” to festival breakouts like “Obvious Child” and new originals like “Always Be My Maybe,” Netflix is filled with prime examples of all the loving, funny offerings the genre still has to offer. Here’s 8 you can watch right now.

Just as “Game of Thrones” came to an end, HBO announced that it has renewed “Gentleman Jack” for a second season. That’s great news for fans of British actress Gemma Whelan, who essentially amounts to a Venn diagram of where the two shows’ audiences overlap.
On “GoT” Whelan built a devoted following as Yara Greyjoy, Queen of the Iron Islands and sister to Theon (Alfie Allen). Her character in “Gentleman Jack” is a far cry from the bloodthirsty lothario she plays on “Thrones,” however; as conservative Marian she antagonizes her casanova sister, the swaggering butch Anne Lister (Suranne Jones). Though Whelan herself is straight, she has endeared herself to Lgbtq audiences with one gay and one gay-adjacent role; it is a testament to her versatility as an actress that her two biggest TV roles could not be more different.

Anne Oldham admits she wasn’t “aware” of Neil Gamon and Terry Pratchett‘s best-selling fantasy novel “Good Omens” before signing on to design the makeup and hairstyles for the TV adaptation. In fact, this limited series about an angel (Michael Sheen) and a demon (David Tennant) trying to prevent Armageddon was “very different from anything I’d done before, so I was really flattered that they’d offered it to me.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Oldham above.

Oldham is best known for her work on period programs such as “Downton Abbey” and adaptations of “Emma” (2006) and “Jane Eyre” (2009), all three of which brought her Emmy wins. For this project, “I wanted to look at slightly odd and out-of-the box designs,” she says. “I just wanted it to be quirky and slightly unusual.

Is it damning with faint praise to say of a painter that you love her brushstrokes but aren’t crazy about her paintings? I hope not, because I’m about to say that about Kaoru Mori’s first major manga series Emma.
Emma originally ran for 72 chapters — 52 of the main story, and a follow-up 20 side-story chapters — in Japan’s Beam magazine from 2002 through 2008. It was collected into ten volumes, with the side-stories taking up the last three, then the volumes were translated into English. At some point, there were hardcovers, each collecting two of the smaller paperback tankobon volumes. And that’s what I just read: 72 serial chapters, 10 paperbacks, or five hardcovers.
It’s set in the transition from the Victorian to the Edwardian era in England, starting in what seems to be the late 1890s and continuing for a few years past Victoria’s death in 1901. The central character is Emma,...

Deadline reports that Amy Heckerling’s teen classic will be the latest ’90s favorite to see new life, with “Glow” writer Marquita Robinson on screenplay duty and “Girls Trip” writer Tracy Oliver producing. For the upcoming 91st Oscar telecast, after all the noise about the worst ratings in history, the Academy had to replace producers Michael DeLuca and Jennifer Todd. The duo did well enough their first time around (the Best Picture snafu was not their fault) to warrant returning their second, and put on a decent show within the usual constraints of a ceremony that must showcase 24 award winners.
For Oscars 2019, new producer Donna Gigliotti, who won an Oscar for Miramax’s surprise winner “Shakespeare in Love” in 1999, will pioneer new Academy rules allowing several of the tech Oscars to be handed out during the commercial break and then edited into the live show. (No one will miss their time in the spotlight; there will be a lot less walking.)

The Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Feb. 24, 2019, from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.
“Donna and Glenn will infuse new energy and vision into this 91st awards presentation, and we are excited about a broad-based creative relationship with these two artists,” Academy president John Bailey said on Monday.
Gigliotti won a best picture Academy Award as one of the producers of 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love.” She’s been nominated in the category for “The Reader,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and “Hidden Figures.” Her other producing credits include “Beasts of No Nation,” “Two Lovers,” “The Good Night,” and “Emma.”
Weiss has directed the last three Oscar broadcasts, winning Emmys for outstanding directing for a variety special for the 2017 and 2018 shows. He’s won a total of 14 Emmys (including for his work...
