From documentaries about war in Ukraine and Gaza to the sweetness of “Bluey” to the earthiness of “Somebody Somewhere” and “Reservation Dogs” to the Mel Brooks canon, the 84th annual Peabody Awards ceremony on Sunday saluted an array of standout TV programs, movies, documentaries, podcasts, video games and more.
The respected awards, adminstered by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications, were held at the Beverly Wilshire hotel, marking the first time the Peabodys were handed out on the West Coast after decades in New York.
“Finally, Los Angeles gets an awards show,” host Kumail Nanjiani quipped at the start of the three hour-plus ceremony.
The high volume of conflict in the world and in the U.S. — from school shootings to hate crimes to the spike in political extremism — was reflected in the programs selected for this year’s honors and in the comments on stage from winners.

Rian Johnson is collecting stars for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, like Hideo Kojima scanning celebrities for cameos in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and the upcoming horror game Od. The third chapter of Johnson’s whodunit series, Wake Up Dead Man, finds Daniel Craig reprising the role of Detective Benoit Blanc with Josh O’ Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis rounding out the cast.

Updated: Kerry Washington and Glenn Close are the newest suspects in “Knives Out 3.”
They join the previously announced cast of Daniel Craig, returning as the quirky detective Benoit Blanc, and possible suspects of “Fleabag” actor Andrew Scott, “Challengers” breakout Josh O’Connor and “Priscilla” star Cailee Spaeny. “Knives Out” movies are known to employ a who’s who of Hollywood, so expect plenty of casting announcements for the whodunit in the coming weeks.
Rian Johnson is writing and directing the third “Knives Out” installment, titled “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.” He’s also producing with his T-Street partner Ram Bergman, who worked on the first two films. “Wake Up Dead Man” is expected to soon go into production and is slated to release in 2025. Plot details have yet to be revealed, but Johnson and Craig have teased that it is Blanc’s “most dangerous case yet.”

The 15th anniversary edition of the London Indian Film Festival will open on June 26 with the European Premiere of U.S. indie, tear-jerker drama “Paper Flowers,” directed by Mahesh Pailoor (“Brahmin Bulls”), starring “Deadpool’s” Karan Soni. It will close on July 3 with a screening of ultra-violent Indian actioner “Kill,” which is produced by Karan Johar and Guneet Monga and which represents Lionsgate’s first foray into South Asian film production.
In between, the festival will operate across five additional cities and thematically extend itself across feature film, TV series, short films, Xr and gaming.
“It’s been an incredible journey marking 15 years this year and we are delighted to expand into new U.K. cities, welcoming Bradford and Liverpool into our 6-city reach. Cannes 2024 was a life-changing journey for Indian production designer-turned actor Anasuya Sengupta who won best actress at the festival’s Un Certain Regard strand for “The Shameless.”
Sengupta made her acting debut alongside several of her friends in Anjan Dutt’s music-themed “Madly Bangali” (2009) and served as director’s assistant to Claire McCarthy in Australian production “The Waiting City” the same year. Kolkata native, Sengupta then moved to Mumbai, home to the vast Bollywood industry. She wasn’t impressed by Bollywood and became a noted production designer and artist instead. Her credits in that field include Netflix’s “Selection Day” and “Ray” and feature films “Chippa” and “Good Morning Sunshine.” Acting stayed alive in the shape of the occasional commercial or short film.
Acting became front and center again when Bulgarian-American filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov was prepping for “The Shameless.” At one stage, when he was particularly disillusioned with the financing...

Film festivals in North America have launched some of the greatest movies ever – whether nonfiction or fiction. Telluride premiered Free Solo, Slumdog Millionaire, and Argo; Sundance debuted sex, lies and videotape, Napoleon Dynamite, An Inconvenient Truth, and this year’s Oscar winning documentary 20 Days in Mariupol; the Toronto International Film Festival premiered I Am Not Your Negro and Ray.
The importance of festivals to the industry is beyond question, but many of the most celebrated ones on this continent are facing a moment of crisis. Post-pandemic financial struggles are plaguing Sundance, TIFF, and Hot Docs among others, and the situation with the latter festival is serious enough that it may have to fold.
Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast digs into the precarious state of film festivals in our latest episode, examining that vital question with guests steeped in the field: Ken Jacobson, executive director of the Hot Springs Documentary...

If you think of the word “frozen” today, a certain Disney movie and the song “Let It Go” come to mind. If you thought of that word in 1998, Madonna’s ballad “Frozen” would have come to mind. While “Let It Go” is a fun show tune for little kids, “Frozen” is the superior song for many reasons. The Queen of Pop explained what she thought of “Frozen” in retrospect.
The difference between ‘Let It Go’ and Madonna’s ‘Frozen’
“Let It Go” has a fun Broadway melody reminiscent of “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. Its message is great for little kids who want to rebel against their parents by staying up past their bedtime. However, it’s not the sort of rebel song that works for anyone over the age of seven. It’s a little too tame and, well, Disneyesque for that. Walt Disney probably would have loved it but...

My favorite scene in the hilarious new film “The Fall Guy” is the one where Emily Blunt (recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Oppenheimer”) belts out the Phil Collins classic “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” as Ryan Gosling (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Barbie”) finds himself in a particularly dramatic — and dangerous — sequence of events.
As Blunt sang with all her heart, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the timing was.
Forty years ago this very month, the famous power ballad had just completed a three-week reign on top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Against All Odds” was the title song from the romantic thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. The Taylor Hackford-directed movie was met with solid reviews and healthy ticket sales. But its most notable success was Collins’s song, which quickly took the Billboard chart by storm.

From his beginnings as a featured player on In Living Color and creator and star of The Jamie Foxx Show to multiple Academy Award–nominated performances (and one win as Ray Charles in 2004’s Ray), Jamie Foxx has proven over and over again that he has the range.
Need someone to bring the funny? He’s your man. Bad guys need beating up? Yes, hello. Emotional gut punch required? On it. All three at once? When you’re done watching him tear up the screen with Snoop Dogg and Dave Franco, make sure to queue up some of his past projects listed below.

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ is by far and wide accepted as the worst release in Thor’s standalone series in the MCU. Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie was a campy take on both Thor and one of his most notorious villains – Gorr the God Butcher.
It was definitely a drastic shift from ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ which is considered one of the best installments in the series. Now talking to Vanity Fair, Chris Hemsworth himself noted that he blames himself for the failure of the movie, and blames himself for accepting to ridicule such a well-established character.
Chris Hemsworth acknowledged that Marvel fans deserve another ‘Thor’ movie following the perceived disappointment of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ in 2022. He previously admitted that the fourth installment was ‘too silly,’ and this criticism seems to linger for him.
I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself.

Mario Van Peebles has been tapped to direct “That’ll Be the Day,” the story of how Buddy Holly and other musicians of the late 1950s helped give birth to rock ‘n’ roll and influence the wider societal and cultural landscape, including the civil rights movement.
Music has been central to much of Van Peebles’ work, from his 1991 gangster movie “New Jack City” to his work on “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which he co-executive produced for Hulu. Van Peebles is currently writing a musical stage tribute to his father Melvin Van Peebles, to be performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center later this year.

The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

SQÜRL, the duo of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and composer Carter Logan, have announced a new album, Music for Man Ray — “a sonic exploration of the cinematic works of Dadaist pioneer Man Ray.” It’s set to be released on May 17th via Sacred Bones.
For the past eight years, Jarmusch and Logan have been providing the live score to the short films of Man Ray in venues across the world. This culminated with the 100th anniversary of Man Ray’s inaugural foray into filmmaking in the spring of 2023, when the newly restored Man Ray: Return to Reason — a Man Ray anthology — premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The recordings on this particular album were born from a February 2023 performance at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Like with their past work under the SQÜRL moniker, the resulting music was created with “distorted guitars, hypnotic feedback, loops and affected synthesizers.”

As the film chronicles Jackson’s rise to prominence — first as a member of the Jackson 5, then as a solo artist — the record label will factor in significantly. “Power” franchise star Tate (who coincidentally played “Thriller” producer Quincy Jones in 2004’s “Ray”) takes on the Motown impresario Gordy, who redefined American music by platforming such acts as the Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, Gladys Knight and the Pips and Diana Ross & the Supremes.
Graham portrays Ross, who, as lead singer of the chart-topping group, was asked to officially introduce the Jackson 5 to the world and remained a lifelong influence on Michael Jackson.

As the country celebrates Bihar Diwas on Friday, Ians has compiled a list of actors from the state who have made it big on the big screen and are making waves in Bollywood.

He made his film debut with a one-minute role in the 1994 Naseeruddin Shah-Om Puri-starrer ‘Drohkaal’, followed by a minor role as a dacoit in Shekhar Kapur’s much-acclaimed ‘Bandit Queen’. Shirley is a biographical movie about the life of Shirley Chisholm movie written and directed by John Ridley starring Regina King.
A schoolteacher, elected to Congress. It was the early 70s, and Shirley Chisholm was also the first African American woman to run for the Presidency of the United States. A woman who ran without any backing, representing the members of the working class, the minorities.
A movie filled with hope, faith, and feminism.
Indeed, more than a racial candidacy, Shirley Chisholm based her campaign on gender politics and minorities, paving the way for a hopeful future.
A film about faith, but above all about clear-cut American politics.
About the movie
Faith, hope, and a lot of political film of good ideas, faith, hope, and political consciousness. A movie with its good ideas well defined (we don’t deny them at any moment) and does everything possible to assert its thesis.

Like with basically every new Ghostbusters movie, I was skeptical but optimistic heading into the latest installment, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The original is perhaps my favorite comedy of all time but its follow-ups have always felt lacking to one degree or another. Ghostbusters II is a lazy retread with only a handful of good moments, while the 2016 film suffers from a lack of confidence in its own genuinely creative ideas and falls back on nostalgia in the process. And Afterlife suffered a similar but not as extreme fate, in addition to never quite escaping from under the weight of its massive tone problem.
But now, forty years after the original with a fresh and talented new cast joining a few familiar faces, has Frozen Empire finally figured out the secret to a truly great Ghostbusters sequel? Has the series finally stopped relying on nostalgia, ready to move forward with a...

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

Since the Academy Awards were first handed out in 1929, only 23 Oscars have been awarded to performances given by Black actresses and actors. Hattie McDaniel made history for Black performers by winning for “Gone With the Wind” (supporting in 1939), while Sidney Poitier was the first male actor to prevail for “Lilies of the Field” (lead in 1963). Denzel Washington became the first two-time Black acting champion when he claimed victory for “Glory” (supporting in 1989) and “Training Day” (lead in 2001), with Mahershala Ali joining him years later for “Moonlight” (supporting in 2016) and “Green Book” (supporting in 2018). Halle Berry was the first, and so far only, Black Best Actress thanks to “Monster’s Ball” (2001). The acting category with the most Black winners is Best Supporting Actress, with 10 including recent champ Da’Vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers” (2023). Sean Ono Lennon gave his thoughts on Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles movies while chatting with Variety’s Marc Malkin at the Oscars during Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv.
Mendes plans to make four films, with each one told from a different member’s point of view. “That’s the minimum you need to cover the epic story of The Beatles. You need four films,” Ono Lennon said.
As for who he hopes will play John Lennon, Ono Lennon had a very specific (and surprising) actor in mind.
“I’m hoping that Emma Stone might consider it because she did such a good job in ‘Poor Things.’ I think if you’re gonna reach that as an actor, the next obvious step is to really go for it and be John Lennon,” he quipped.
On a more serious note, Ono Lennon reflected on the difficulty of pulling off a...

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).
Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

Whenever Jamie Foxx steps up to a microphone, one can expect to be entertained.
And that’s precisely what the Oscar and Grammy-winning superstar plans to do when he hits the road to discuss the circumstances around his sudden hospitalization nearly a year ago.
On Sunday afternoon, Foxx offered attendees of the African American Film Critics Association’s (Aafca) Special Achievement Awards luncheon a sneak peek at the tone of that material — a mix of heartfelt reflection with some top-notch zingers — while accepting Aafca’s Producers Award alongside his Foxxhole Productions partner Datari Turner.
2023 was a big year for the company thanks to the back-to-back successes of Netflix’s “They Cloned Tyrone” and Amazon’s “The Burial.” But while Foxxhole’s movies were shooting to the top of the streaming charts, Foxx was fighting for his life after suffering a medical emergency — the nature of which has not been disclosed.

Guy Ritchie has been set to direct and executive produce the Paramount+ Ray Donovan series, ‘The Donovans.’
The forthcoming series, which is currently in development, has been described as a loose adaptation of the hit Showtime series that ran for seven seasons. The original show starred Liev Schreiber as a professional “fixer” who worked in Los Angeles, taking on high-profile clients and solving their problems using any means necessary. While the new series will draw inspiration from the original, it is expected to feature a fresh storyline and unique characters that will set it apart from its predecessor.
The spin-off description reads; With the most powerful clients in Europe, ‘The Donovans’ will see family fortunes and reputations at risk, odd alliances unfold, and betrayal around every corner; and while the family might be London’s most elite fixers today, the nature of their business means there is no guarantee what’s in store tomorrow.

Jamie Foxx is known for his work as an actor, starring in massive projects like Django Unchained, Ray, The Burial, and They Cloned Tyrone. In the early years of his career, however, things were certainly less gilded for him. Hollywood has a long history of casting and awarding able-bodied actors to portray characters with disabilities. In the Oscars’ best actor category alone, there is Daniel Day-Lewis for My Left Foot, Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything, Colin Firth for The King’s Speech and Jamie Foxx for Ray. In the history of the Academy Awards, only three disabled actors have been awarded a best performance trophy for portraying a character who has their disability.
Director Aaron Schimberg notes that onscreen portrayals of people with disfigurements, as seen in his latest film A Different Man, are still largely played by able-bodied people in prosthetics. “On the other hand,” he continues, “When I’ve cast actors with disfigurements, people have called that exploitative, which seems to run counter to this whole discussion about representation that we’re having.” For his newest film, he wanted to interrogate the complexities of that sometimes counterproductive conversation.

Paul Giamatti turned the tables on Leonardo DiCaprio when Oscar nominations were announced, with Giamatti nominated for Best Actor for “The Holdovers” while DiCaprio was snubbed for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” But 19 years ago it was the other way around.
SEETop 20 Oscar snubs of performers: Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Willem Dafoe …
In 2004 the Oscar lineup for Best Actor consisted of Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”), and the eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”). Someone who was notably absent that year was Giamatti for “Sideways.”
Prior to the nominations announcement DiCaprio was recognized at every major precursor for his performance as Howard Hughes, a real-life filmmaker, pilot and businessman, in Martin Scorsese‘s “The Aviator.” Among those plaudits, he won the Golden Globe for Best Film Drama Actor. The movie itself received 13 Oscar noms overall, including DiCaprio’s Best Actor bid.

Television series don't always end on their own terms. Some of the greatest shows in the medium's history have been canceled due to low ratings before they could finish telling their overarching story or just as they were hitting their stride creatively. Some of the most egregious examples of series getting the axe before their time include "My So-Called Life," "Arrested Development," "Frank's Place," "Sports Night," "I'll Fly Away," "Deadwood," and "Mindhunters." It's possible no one has had a more brutal small-screen run than Judd Apatow, who, before he became a hit-making film producer, watched helplessly as three superb, critically acclaimed comedies — "The Ben Stiller Show," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" — failed to earn a second season.
