Indian filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s Netflix original film “Amar Singh Chamkila” is a hit for the streamer, bowing at No. 1 across South Asia and No. 5 on its global Top 10 chart.
The film is a biopic of Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila (Diljit Dosanjh), who rose from obscurity working in a socks manufacturing factory to becoming the most sought after performer in the region alongside his wife Amarjot Kaur (Parineeti Chopra). Chamkila’s suggestive lyrics that were rooted in rural Punjabi life were described as vulgar by many, and he came under pressure from religious and political groups to stop and received death threats. His local musical contemporaries were jealous of his success. In 1988, Chamkila, Kaur and two of their band members were shot dead. The assassination remains unsolved.
The Chamkila story has been told twice before, as a mockumentary “Mehsampur” (2018), and as an unofficial biopic “Jodi” (2023), also starring Dosanjh, who...

Another month of the year 2024 is at its closing, and four Bollywood releases dropped in theaters this month. While Varun Grover’s All India Rank has been kept out of the equations and comparisons due to its limited show size, the other three releases have collectively performed better than last year, bringing the February 2024 Box Office collection to a decent end with a 100+ crore box office collection.
The three releases this month – Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, Yami Gautam’s Article 370, and Vidyut Jammwal’s Crakk have collectively earned 112.10 crore, and while they might cross the 100 crore mark today, they might add another 12 – 15 crore or more to the month.

Utopia’s Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis) grossed an estimated $10k from one engagement at NYC’s Film Forum, where it was the top-ranking pic. Celebrated filmmaker and photographer Anton Corbijn’s first feature documentary is the story of Hipgnosis, the iconic album art design studio that was a force in the music industry behind some of the most recognizable covers of all time. It features new interviews with Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Noel Gallagher and others.
Turnout was backed by a multi-generational crowd of music, design and cinema enthusiasts, Utopia said, with multiple sold-out shows and in-person appearances by Corbijn along with Hipgnosis co-founder Aubrey “Po” Powell. Head of marketing and distribution Kyle Greenberg said the doc drew drom the distributor’s traditional Gen Z fans, along with older demos “that grew up with that music and those albums.”
“Kids are discovering new music all the time.

Canadian exhibition giant Cineplex saw its first quarter loss narrow and its overall revenues climb by nearly half as the Hollywood box office recovery continues north of the U.S. border.
Toronto-based Cineplex posted a loss of Can$30.4 million dollars (US$22.4 million), or Can$.48 per-share (US$0.35), compared with a loss of Can$42.2 million, or Can$0.67-per-share in the same period of 2022.
The narrowing loss came as overall revenue jumped 49 percent to Can$341 million ($252.8 million), compared to a year-earlier Can$228.7 million, as families and older audiences, a demographic wary of the multiplex during the pandemic, increasingly join teens in Canadian theaters as the health emergency ends.
“I’m encouraged by the positive momentum our industry and company have realized with strong consumer demand for moving-going, content volume returning to pre-pandemic levels, the commitment to exhibition from our studio partners and the record results for our diversified businesses,” Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob...

Indian films are a box office mainstay and one, Jodi, from Rhythm Boyz Entertainment, hit big this weekend Stateside, grossing $734,000 on just 125 screens. In April, the film set a record as the most viewed Punjabi trailer in 24 hours (over 12 million views on YouTube).
“This has been happening more and more — Indian films popping into the top 5, or 10, or 15th” place in North America, said Paul Degarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, which compiled the numbers on Jodi. “It shows the strength of Indian cinema. That’s a really impressive number, almost three quarters of a million dollars at 125 theaters.” The ones that pop do really well on a per-theater-average, even if they make $1-$2 million or aren’t in the top ten, he said. Jodi’s PTA is $5.75k.
Some other breakouts this year include Waltair Veerayya, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Dasara. Indian films may wind up being even...
