Such a shame
I love Bruce Campbell and was excited when i saw the preview. I imagined this to be similar in style to Ash Vs evil dead and whilst it shares a similar aesthetic particularly in creature design, that's where the similarities end.
This isn't a funny movie. Bruce is charming and witty in all his scenes but unfortunately he isn't the lead, it's an ensemble cast and the rest of the actors really don't carry their weight.
Devon Sawa gives a "where's my pay check" performance and is unlikable as the guy we are supposed to like.
Michael Jai White is OK but he goes Schwarzenegger T1 instead of Arnie T2.
Stephen Peck is a bit over the top as the kiss ass company man but it kind of works mainly because he has the most direct interaction with Bruce.
Ivana Baquero is just kind of there, taking space. It's such an ineffectual performance that they could have used a cardboard cutout and we wouldn't have know the difference.
Ryan Lee plays a horribly written character. He is basically Carmen Electra's character from the start of Scary movie. He can't even work out how to start a truck and is insufferable the entire movie.
Aside from that, the creature design is OK as are the practical effects. The CG effects however are pretty poor. It's low-budget but they could have leaned into that a little more with the final boss and just made more campy.
The takeaway is if you cast Bruce Campbell in a horror comedy for God sake make him the lead!
