Presenting the Oscar for best actress at the 94th Academy Awards earlier this year, Anthony Hopkins described the nominees as actors “who’ve built their careers on some of the most memorable and most unexpected performances in movie after movie after movie.” No surprise, then, that the winner turned out to be Jessica Chastain, who took home the gold for The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
With three Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nods (and one win for each), Chastain is a true Hollywood maverick. In her almost two decades on-screen, she’s played spies, troubled wives, real-life heroes (The Zookeeper’s Wife) and power-brokers. She’s gone to space, ruled over a haunted mansion (Crimson Peak) and fought a murderous clown (It: Chapter 2).

If you ever watched Pixar’s heartwarming, imaginative 2009 film Up and thought, “Wow, I’d sure love to see what that big floating house would be like to live in,” you might be getting your chance.
As a part of Airbnb’s new “Icons” line of vacation homes, the house from Up has been painstakingly recreated in Abiquiu, New Mexico and is available to book now. The Airbnb listing, which celebrates the 15th anniversary of Up, is “hosted” by the film’s protagonist Carl Frederickson and features a myriad of elements from the original film — Ellie’s Adventure Book, Dug the talking dog, and yes, the balloons. The listing features a photo of the balloon-laden property being lifted by a crane high up in the air, so if you rent, you might want to hold onto the porch railing when stepping outside.

Tom Cruise is known for going above and beyond when it comes to film stunts. But there was one stunt so dangerous that the action star refused to even tell his family about it.
Tom Cruise revealed the 1 film stunt he didn’t want to tell his family about Tom Cruise | Theo Wargo/Getty Images
Cruise has always preferred to do his own stunts if he could get away with. And even in his older years, he’s shown no signs of slowing down. The actor is 61 years old, and is still seen doing the same death-defying sequences that he did in his much younger years. Many of his friends, family, and colleagues are usually well-aware that Cruise might put himself in harm’s way for the sake of his films. But there was one action sequence Cruise felt he needed to be tight-lipped about.

Tom Cruise has made a career out of playing action heroes. Jessica Chastain, however, was very new to the role when she was cast in The Debt. Fortunately, she was able to find inspiration from Cruise to feel believable in a very unfamiliar role.

Chastain once starred alongside Sam Worthington in the 2010 thriller The Debt. The feature saw the actor portraying the younger version of Helen Mirren’s character in the film, who was a Mossad agent. Back then, Chastain considered the feature her first official introduction to the action genre.
“I think every role is so different that I’m playing, that every role is kind of the first to introduce me. Like this is my introduction to the action-thriller genre,” she once told Vulture.

Life After Oil, a film festival that deals specifically with the environment and human rights on an international level, celebrates an important milestone: its 10th edition. A journey that began in 2014 under the sign of cinema seen not only as artistic expression, but also as a tool for knowledge and information on topics that should concern everyone. For the third consecutive year, the collaboration with the municipality of Villanovaforru, a town in the province of South Sardinia that will host the event from June 6 to 10, is confirmed.
“In spite of all the logistical and organizational difficulties that are encountered and that seem to be increasing instead of decreasing,” highlights artistic director Massimiliano Mazzotta, “the need to make a clean change in the system is so tangible that we want to continue in our intent of popularization through cinema in all its facets, with the hope of reaching an ever-wider audience.

Cementing their place as auteurs of the absurd, Spanish writer-directors Juan González and Nando Martínez, of creative outfit Burnin Percebes, presented their latest feature “The Fantastic Golem Affairs,” to audiences at the Malaga Film Festival.
A sci-fi caper that embodies the duo’s freeform, standalone filmmaking style, it competed alongside further buzz titles “20.000 Species Of Bees,” from Spanish director Estíbaliz Urresola, and Gerardo Herrero’s,“Under Therapy.”
Selected for Canada’s Fantasia Film Festival, it begins after a night of heavy drinking, with quintessential bachelor Juan and his friend David playing a game of charades on the roof. During a highly-animated round, David falls from the ledge and shatters into a million ceramic pieces. The event sets off a fiendishly ludicrous odyssey through Juan’s daily affairs as he seeks to uncover the truth behind his ruptured relationship.

The Game Boy was slightly before my time, but I remember the Game Boy Color vividly. It was an introduction to handheld consoles, and a chance to finally have Mario and Pokémon in my pocket. Yet to my surprise, the best companion for long road trips was neither Pikachu nor those bouncy Italian plumbers; it was a game comprised of falling blocks and the Russian folk song “Korobeiniki.” It was Tetris.
I’d been aware of Tetris before then. It existed on my mother’s computer, but it was barely considered a video game there. Mario or Sonic were games that kids played. But Tetris was for everyone; she’d even play it on occasion. This was the power which made it the second highest selling game franchise of all-time: Everyone gets addicted to visions of falling blocks. Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Thomas Newman’s score for Operation Mincemeat, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow, as Warner Bros. releases the film in the UK and Ireland.
Operation Mincemeat tells the extraordinary story of two intelligence officers that changed the course of World War II, saving tens of thousands of lives and breaking Hitler’s deadly grip on Europe by recruiting the skills of the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man.
For the drama, Newman looked to craft a striking orchestral score, which evoked intensely dramatic action, while befitting more nuanced moments. The film was directed by John Madden, with whom Newman had previously collaborated on titles including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Debt. “John Madden is the perfect collaborator. Whip-smart, full of humor and a savvy listener,” says the composer.

Ritwik Pareek’s “Dug Dug” asks how a culture might pour its anxieties into a supernatural mystery, and it answers in raucous fashion. After a motorcycle accident leaves a man dead in Rajasthan, India, his impounded bike begins mysteriously reappearing at the scene. Locks and chains don’t help, and local villagers are drawn to this oddity — as are numerous grifters — resulting in the founding of a bizarre new religion. The film is moderately effective as social satire, though it most succeeds as a dizzying, intoxicating romp, bursting at the seams with vivid detail and musical energy, and a fair few flourishes borrowed from big Hollywood names.

Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for “The Queen,” will portray Israel’s legendary Prime Minister Golda Meir in “Golda.” The film will be directed by Academy Award winner Guy Nattiv, and produced by BAFTA winner Michael Kuhn.
Embankment will represent international sales, with CAA Media Finance and ICM jointly handling the North American rights. Production is eyeing an October start.
The screenplay – written by Nicholas Martin (“Florence Foster Jenkins”), who also produces – focuses on the intensely dramatic and high-stakes responsibilities and decisions that Meir, also known as the “Iron Lady of Israel,” faced during the Yom Kippur War.
On Oct. 6, 1973, under cover of darkness, on Israel’s holiest day and during the month of Ramadan, the combined forces of Egypt, Syria, and Jordan begin a surprise attack on the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights. A couple of things have caught our eye in February’s Netflix UK line-up, first, the German dystopian sci-fi Tribes of Europa. After the success of sci-fi series Dark, the streaming service invested in a bunch of new German-language series, including the mega-successful historical Barbarians. Tribes was among them, and tells the story of a group of siblings in 2074, separated after a global disaster that leaves Europe riven by warring factions. Also sounding like a good time is South Korean comedy Space Sweepers, about a spaceship crew tasked with cleaning up intergalactic trash.

When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.
Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

Blut und Ehre. It’s German for “Blood and Honor.” Not only that, but the phrase was also utilized as a reprehensible rallying cry for Nazi Germany during World War II and the years before. It was their baseless justification for committal of appalling crimes against humanity. Cinema has—however—provided some microscopic but—nonetheless—cathartic examples of such individuals getting their due comeuppance. Take “The Debt,” “The Odessa File,” “This Must Be The Place,” some scenes in “X-Men: First Class” or all of Amazon’s Nazi-hunting show, “Hunters.” A new movie entitled “The Secrets We Keep” sees another Holocaust survivor granted the opportunity to make the red stuff flow out of the person who tortured her years ago.

"Why are you doing this!?" Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for a horror thriller film titled Look Away, the latest feature from director Assaf Bernstein (of The Debt). The twisty, not-so-clever concept involves a disconnected, insecure high school teen who switches places with her "supportive, but evil, twin that she discovers in the mirror's reflection." Who then acts out on other impulses and feelings. Look Away stars India Eisley as Maria and "Airam", as well as Jason Isaacs, Mira Sorvino, Harrison Gilbertson, Penelope Mitchell, Adam Hurtig, and Kristen Harris. Looks like it will all play out exactly as expected, of course she's going to learn her lesson. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Assaf Bernstein's Look Away, direct from YouTube: A lonely 18-year-old high schooler named Maria (India Eisley) opens up to her reflection because of the lack of support she has from family and her peers.

Director Assaf Bernstein wrote and directed the thriller The Debt in 2007. This title was remade for U.S. markets in 2010. Bernstein's U.S. film debut is the psychological thriller Look Away. Originally titled Behind the Glass, this film looks at an isolated, young woman and her desire for something more. When she turns to a dark, inner voice, Maria finds herself in a new, violent world. As well, Look Away stars: India Eisley (Underworld: Awakening), Mira Sorvino (Mimic), and Jason Isaacs (A Cure for Wellness). The film's early release details and trailer are available here. In a 2016 interview with Deadline, Bernstein mentioned that the idea for Look Away was developed when he was a child. In the interview he also talks about the pivotal role of Maria: "the double role of Maria/Airam is an amazingly powerful, rare and dynamic role (Deadline)." Bernstein also states that the role of the father is dark and enigmatic.

While Disney has held many of the biggest box office hits this summer, the season has also been very good to Focus Features. Universal’s arthouse wing has already found big success with the Fred Rogers doc “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” and now looks to keep adult audiences coming in with Spike Lee’s confrontational Ku Klux Klan period film, “BlacKkKlansman.”
It’s the start of what could be Focus’ most stacked slate in its 16-year history. In addition to the two aforementioned films, Focus’ awards season lineup includes Joel Edgerton’s adaptation of the Lgbt novel “Boy Erased,” the Saoirse Ronan/Margot Robbie-fronted “Mary Queen of Scots,” and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic “On the Basis of Sex,” all of which could earn Oscar nominations in January.
