It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

When a rock festival held in Tallinn in the summer of 1988 was shut down by Soviet authorities, thousands of Estonians took to the streets, waving Estonian flags and singing patriotic songs in a bold show of defiance of Soviet rule. By the festival’s final night, some 200,000 people had joined what would later be dubbed the Singing Revolution, a catalyst for the non-violent movement that swept across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the early-‘90s and paved the way for independence.

Much has been made of "The Thing," John Carpenter's 1982 box office bomb-turned-genre darling. Whether it's Bill Lancaster's adapted script of John W. Campbell Jr.'s 1938 novella "Who Goes There?," Rob Bottin's gnarly special effects (with an assist from dog-Thing creature designer Stan Winston), or Carpenter's meticulous direction that's light on the jump scares and heavy on the dread, the result is now considered one of the great gargoyles in the horror movie pantheon. Though the story is about an alien organism infiltrating an Arctic research post, and though there are plenty of tentacles about, the narrative is largely character-driven as paranoia and mistrust grow among the isolated cadre of men, led by Kurt Russell's pilot, R.J. MacReady.

If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).
The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.
It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

Swedish director Jonas Akerlund’s has a knack for merging music and visuals, having spent the first few decades of his career making videos for artists including Madonna, Beyonce, Ozzy Osbourne and Rammstein.
In 2002 he made his directorial feature debut with “Spun,” a dark comedy featuring Jason Schwartzman and Mena Suvari, and has since continued to dabble in both music and feature films, occasionally combing the two with projects such as 2018’s “Lords of Chaos,” a horror film about Norway’s early 1990s black metal scene. He was also set to direct “Midas Man,” a biopic of The Beatles’ legendary manager Brian Epstein, before parting ways with the production last winter.
Akerlund’s latest project, Netflix limited series “Clark,” is not music-themed, although it’s very much informed by the music and culture of the ‘70s. The show tells the story of notorious Swedish criminal Clark Olofsson (played by “It...

Since hosting its first dedicated drama series conference during the 2017 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, the Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event – the festival’s industry arm – has continued to expand the scope of its popular TV Beats Forum.
This year’s event, which will take place during the Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event from Nov. 18-25, includes a conference program focused on the latest industry trends, preview screenings of the newest series from the Nordic, Baltic and Central and Eastern European regions, and a co-financing market showcasing a curated selection of eight-10 series currently in development.
Marge Liiske, managing director of Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, says the growing TV strand is a recognition of the “well-established reality” facing Baltic producers today.

Photo: 'Clark' I’m not typically a big fan of media centered around heists; sometimes they do not contain as much exhilaration to capture my attention. However, I will admit that the extreme action and goosebump-inducing thrills that the characters experience are quite a rollercoaster to see within themselves. I’m not entirely sure what it is about heist media; maybe it’s because I’m more of a fan of less chaotic (and gun-filled) entertainment. But, what I am a big fan of is where interesting terms stem from (both psychologically and philosophically); and when I got the chance to sit down and watch ‘Clark’, seeing how a typical heist series mixed in with telling the story of an infamous figure in history that would coin one of the most interesting psychological terms, I will say that I was enthused with how I would feel by the end of it.

Clark is an upcoming six-part Netflix series that will be premiering on May 5, 2022. The show focuses on the story of Clark Olofsson, a Swedish criminal who received sentences for attempted murder, assault, robbery, and dealing narcotics. He is most popularly known for his involvement with the Norrmalmstorg robbery, which would eventually result in the coining of the phrase “Stockholm syndrome.” Clark is a Swedish language adaptation of Olofsson’s biography and will be directed by Jonas Akerlund, who previously worked on Lord of Chaos. As the undisputed king of streaming (for now at least), Netflix has enjoyed the presence of some major blockbusters. Now, with its list of new releases for May 2022, Netflix is bringing back one of its biggest ever hits.
Stranger Things season 4 “volume one” is set to premiere on May 27. It’s been a long wait for new episodes of this ’80s-tinged sci-fi/horror series and based on the trailers, the wait will have been well worth it. In this go-around, the kids of Hawkins (now high schoolers) will have to contend with the Upside Down once again to go along with the horrors of the Creel House.
While Stranger Things is the biggest Netflix original this month, it’s far from the only one. Mike Myers’ latest series The Pentaverate premieres on May 5 (fittingly: 5/5). Meanwhile The Lincoln Lawyer is set to arrive on May 13 followed by Love, Death & Robots Volume...

The latest official trailer for the Netflix crime biographical drama "Clark" is here, and let me tell you one thing about this trailer — it is chaotic. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, "Clark" chronicles the life of notorious Swedish gangster/bank robber Clark Olofsson, who single-handedly might have been the originator of Stockholm Syndrome. While I am not quite sure how to feel about all that, Bill Skarsgård, who plays the "charismatic criminal," seems to be having a ton of fun portraying the character's layered origin story.
Check out the madness that "Clark" seems to be by checking out the trailer below.

"This f&!*ing society has never given me an honest chance!" Netflix has revealed the full-length trailer for the crime comedy series Clark, made by Swedish filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund. Clark tells the story of the Swedish criminal who gave rise to the idea of "The Stockholm Syndrome" during a failed bank robbery in Stockholm in the 70s. Clark Olofsson has been referred to as a "celebrity gangster", and over his many decades has managed to escape prisons and commit robberies all over Europe. Åkerlund explains: "Clark is the story about the most politically incorrect man, who lived the most politically incorrect life. These are the kinds of stories I always look for. You’ve heard the term, but what is Stockholm syndrome exactly? Britannica’s dictionary defines it as “a psychological response wherein a captive begins to identify closely with his or her captors, as well as with their agenda and demands.” Essentially, it’s a coping mechanism that kidnapped victims have been found to feel in horribly stressful situations like kidnapping. While it’s psychologically awful and harrowing, there is a sense and need for order in the chaos which often makes the victim—grasping for anything positive at all—to empathize with their tormenter.

With his daring criminal lifestyle and charismatic personality, Olofsson captured the public’s imagination and eventually became the most infamous celebrity in the country. Exclusive: Midas Man, the biopic of Beatles manager Brian Epstein, has hired a new director as it looks to get back into production as soon as possible.
Sara Sugarman, known for directing movies including music comedy Vinyl, Lifetime’s House Of Versace and Disney’s Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen, is newly aboard.
As we revealed earlier this month, the movie entered hiatus as producers sought to replace director Jonas Akerlund.
Akerlund told us today: “I regret that things haven’t turned out as we had planned on Midas Man. I wish Jacob [Fortune-Lloyd] and the team the best with the film.”
The Queen’s Gambit co-star Jacob Fortune-Lloyd stars as Epstein in the biopic, alongside Emily Watson, Eddie Marsan, Lukas Gage, Rosie Day and Bill Milner. The project charts Epstein’s role in the creative explosion of the 1960s and his sizable influence on pop music.

When U.K.-based Camelot Films’ “Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher” was forced to relocate to Lithuania earlier this year, after the film’s Welsh financing fell through, executive producer Kestutis Drazdauskas knew the first challenge facing director Daniel Graham’s period drama would be re-creating 19th century England in 21st century Vilnius.
“It was an extensive set construction for us, because locations for us are minimal that could play as that period in England and Wales,” says Drazdauskas, who runs the production company Artbox and is chairman of the board of the Independent Producers Assn. of Lithuania. Time was of the essence for the 36-day shoot, but local crews were quick to respond, with set dressing and skillfully deployed props allowing the production to recreate the look and feel of Victorian England.

Dig if you will, a picture: It’s the late ‘80s, and not everyone is fortunate to obtain cherished IPs, with the masks and the knifed gloves still keeping warm by the dying slasher embers. But not everyone needed it either; for instance, look at filmmaker Greydon Clark - the man was never averse to dipping into the zeitgeist and extracting whatever the hell he liked. In this case, he gave us Uninvited (1987), a fun and goopy *checks notes* killer cat on a yacht flick. I’m still unsure what glob of cultural goo Clark was grabbing for, but I’ve always appreciated his mud-pie approach, and this one ends up being a messy, grainy, blob of glorious nonsense.

When “Stranger Things” recently returned to Lithuania, where parts of season four of the Netflix supernatural drama were filmed in early 2020, the Baltic winter delivered on its usual promises of frigid temperatures and frosty weather. But it also offered a hopeful sign that 2021 might bring some relief, after the trials of a year turned topsy-turvy by the coronavirus pandemic.
“Last year we had no snow, so we had to make it all,” says Gary Tuck, of Baltic Film Services, which serviced the shoot. “This year we had lots of snow. So that was nice.”
It has been difficult to find a silver lining to a pandemic which has upended production across the globe, and which forced a shutdown in Lithuania for several months last spring. Yet 2020 was nevertheless the most successful year for the local film industry since the introduction of a tax incentive in 2014.

John Gianvito's Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind (2007) is showing November 3 - December 2, 2020 on Mubi in the Rediscovered series.Let’s start with the title—a shotgun marriage between two omnipresent yet far from equally featured players in these unremarked, meditative spaces: an abstract impulse that supposedly keeps our American republic healthy and vital (while producing a lot of junk along with more helpful items) and a concrete force that softly caresses everything in its path, keeping us alive and alert. More specifically, an encounter between the cause of many of the deaths that are being commemorated in John Gianvito’s film—especially those relating to the genocide of Native Americans and many of the massacres occasioned by slave revolts and labor protests—and what D.W. Griffith lamented he found missing from modern cinema, the wind in the trees, found in the vicinity of most of the dozens of gravesites visited.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Twin Peaks: The Return” up until the finale.]
With only two hours left in “Twin Peaks,” there are still a lot of questions to be answered. Of course, anyone who’s seen all 16 hours of “The Return” knows it’s a fool’s errand to expect explicit clarification on everything. Some events are random. Some illustrate a tonal shift. Some are purposefully ambiguous.
But there are a few pertinent tidbits which could benefit from further exploration. Below, IndieWire has collected a batch of questions we wouldn’t mind having David Lynch and Mark Frost address — via their expressionist ideals — in what everyone expects to be a damn good finale.
Why is Laura “the one”?
In one message for Hawk (Michael Horse), the Log Lady (Catherine Coulson) said, “Watch and listen to the dream of time and space. It all comes out now, flowing like a river. That which is and is not.
