How do you find lasting love in today’s world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.

This might just be the feel-good film of the year. And it's definitely the best British indie musical since Sing Street. The latest film by Gurinder Chadha, titled Blinded by the Light, just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to a well-earned standing ovation and plenty of cheers. This 1980s rock musical inspired by and integrating the music of Bruce Springsteen, will leave you with that euphoric feeling of wonder and happiness. At least that's how I felt as soon as it ended. This joyful, upbeat, optimistic film is about a Pakistani teen living in a small town in Britain in the 80s who instantly falls in love with Springsteen the moment a friend introduces him to his music. As he struggles with family and racism, he lets the music guide him through adolescence. Set in the late 80s, Blinded by the Light tells the true story ...

The 'Bend-It' Queen Gurinder Chadha is now in India to shoot her next film tentatively entitled The Viceroy's House. The film will chronicle the last six months of Lord Mountbatten's stay in India when the British Raj ended. Gurinder says she has unearthed an immense amount of hitherto-undisclosed facts about Mountbatten's final days in India. "There are the so-called facts that we grew up reading about Mountbatten's closing months in India. But, there are secret documents which I've unearthed. These point to another truth which I'll reveal in my film." Gurinder, whose last feature film a black comedy entitled It's A Wonderful Afterlife was a bit of a letdown, has bought the rights of two very important books to make her Mountbatten film. "My husband Paul (Mayeda Berges) has co-scripted the film with me and I have bought the rights of two books Narinder Singh's Sarla's The Shadow...

4 years after they came together as mother and daughter in Gurinder Chadha's It's A Wonderful Afterlife, Shabana Azmi and British-Canadian actress Goldy Notay are all set re-unite again, this time on stage in a play entitled 'Happy Birthday Sunita' to be staged in London. In fact Shabana is currently in London all on her own. Speaking from the city she said, "I start rehearsals for my play 'Happy Birthday Sunita' today. I'm in a two-bedroom apartment by myself and was also planning to travel by tube to work but the producers were too nervous to let me do that so I've agreed to have a car fetch me and drop me back from work." Shabana says it's a welcome change to be free for while of domestic responsibilities. "I'm looking forward to the experience of fending for myself. A month after my first interview with Sally Hawkins was canceled after she lost her voice, there's still a raspiness in her throat that's at odds with her otherwise indefatigable spirit. Yet both are evidence of a 2010 in which Hawkins has appeared in three films to hit the States this fall -- "Never Let Me Go," "It's a Wonderful Afterlife" and "Made in Dagenham" -- and stood toe to toe with Cherry Jones on Broadway in a revival of George Bernard Shaw's "Mrs. Warren's Profession." (This isn't even to mention the three on the way in 2011: the dramas "Desert Flower" and "Jane Eyre" and the Sundance-bound comedy "Submarine," which I felt was one of the best at this year's Toronto Film Festival.) In the midst of this incredibly busy season for the actress, Hawkins took the time to talk about overcoming shyness, why there truly are no small...

After four days in Jaslok hospital, Shabana Azmi is back, finally without pain. It was a membrane under her ear that caused acute pain and landed her in hospital. What is not known is that this is one more near-catastrophic aftermath of her weight-enhancement for Gurinder Chadha's disastrous It's A Wonderful Afterlife. Ever since she saddled herself with 35 extra kilos to look like a well-fed Punjabi housewife in Chadha's film, Shabana has been besieged by health problems. Who would have thought the latest complication would land her in hospital? Though Shabana now weak and resting at home maintains a diplomatic I-am-now-fine stance, she continues to be extremely vulnerable to illnesses. After her latest health complication, she isn't allowed to use the cell phone for some time. Shabana's husband Javed Akhtar says, "The doctors said that the pain was caused by a membrane imbalance triggered off by a drastic gain and loss of weight.

From the director of Calendar Girls comes Made in Dagenham, a new comedy-drama with an all-star British cast.
Paramount Pictures UK has announced that the film - formerly known under the working title of We Want Sex - will be released in UK cinemas on October 1.
It stars the award-winning Sally Hawkins (pictured right) as Rita O'Grady who is the catalyst for the 1968 Ford Dagenham strike by 187 sewing machinists which led to the advent of the Equal Pay Act.
Working in extremely impoverished conditions and for long, arduous hours, the women at the Ford Dagenham plant finally lay down their tools when they are reclassified as "unskilled".
With humour, common sense and courage they take on their corporate paymasters, an increasingly belligerent local community and finally the government itself.

British-Indian filmmaker Gurinder Chadha is known to challenge the stereotypes in cinema with her unusual portrayals of characters in films such as "Bhaji on the Beach" and "Bend it like Beckham." She does it with élan and a lot of commercial success. Therefore, not many eyebrows are being raised at her next offering, "It's A Wonderful Afterlife," which opens in theatres across India on Friday.
It is evident from the promos that have been doing the rounds on television that the movie is about an overweight British girl of Indian origin, whose mother just wants to see her get married. At the heart of this film is the Indian obsession with marriage but Gurinder has dealt with it in a light-hearted manner, somewhat like the "Ealing" comedies, those lightly satirical movies from the post-World War II era that depicted the British society of those times. Then there are ghosts too,...

Two India-centric epics are currently brewing, according to Deadline.
First: Gurinder Chadha, a woman known for her light comedies -- most notably the hit Bend it Like Beckham -- is finally getting serious. As her latest, It's a Wonderful Afterlife, heads to the screens, she's looking to film a historical epic on the Indian Partition. "That was the moment in August 1947 when Britain clumsily split India in two, dividing secular but Hindu-dominated India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan," and Chadha will dig into how that changed not only the country, but the families inside it. Chadha is on her second draft, adapting from the book Freedom at Midnight. She hopes to have the script finished and ready to shoot next year.
Meanwhile, an open casting call has gone out for another Indian epic, this one focusing on Buddha. Director Ashutosh Gowariker (Lagaan) is looking for an unknown to star in Buddha,...

Life During Wartime (15)
(Todd Solondz, 2009, Us) Shirley Henderson, Paul Reubens, Ciarán Hinds. 98 mins.
It doesn't matter if you don't remember too much about Solondz's 1998 hit Happiness beyond taboo subjects and squirmingly dark comedy, since the characters are played by completely different actors. Despite the good weather, the Channing Tatum-Amanda Seyfried weepie managed to steal the top spot from incumbents Clash of the Titans and How to Train Your Dragon
The winner
Sunny skies once again deterred audiences from congregating in darkened cinemas, but there was nevertheless a star performer among the new releases. Dear John, a romantic drama adapted from a novel by The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks, benefited from a clear audience to target with marketing and publicity. Its opening, a shade under £2m, was enough to grab the top spot, although it's worth remembering that £722,000 of that tally came from previews on Wednesday and Thursday. Without those extra takings, Dear John would have landed third, behind Clash of the Titans and How to Train Your Dragon.
The result enhances Channing Tatum's status as a box-office star. His bare-knuckle boxing drama Fighting opened with £991,000 last May, and expensive...

Gurinder Chadha's new film It's A Wonderful Afterlife had its premiere in London on Monday night at Leicester Square in London. I Am Love (15)
(Luca Guadagnino, 2009, It) Tilda Swinton, Pippo Delbono, Flavio Parenti. 119 mins
The result of a seven-year collaboration between its star and director, I Am Love is an extraordinary fusion of tradition and modernity that's a good deal more original than it might seem at first glance. Calling to mind (although not exclusively modelled on) Luchino Visconti's 1963 Italian classic The Leopard, with a dash of Barbara Stanwyck's immortal Stella Dallas for good measure, this is a powerful and stylish dynastic melodrama that works on many levels. On the surface, Luca Guadagnino's bold, aggressively contemporary direction attacks an age-old story from all angles, zooming, tracking and tilting as John Adams's affecting symphonic score booms. But at the centre of this storm, Swinton gives a superb, sympathetic performance as Emma, the Russian wife of a Milanese textile magnate, whose reckless affair with a working-class chef sends her privileged life into turmoil.

I first met Gurinder Chadha when I was writing a story about her film Bride and Prejudice. We met in an Indian restaurant on Wardour Street, London, and immediately hit it off. Several years later I found myself at a party to celebrate the inauguration of President Obama, at her house. The Bend it Like Beckham director told me that she was making a crazy Asian homage to James Stewart called It's A Wonderful Afterlife and I, full of the party spirit, cheekily asked if I could be in it. I wasn't expecting her to say yes.

The Sundance Film Festival is the kind of place where even the lightest comedies are a little twisted. While Gurinder Chadha made her debut at the festival eight years ago with the frothy soccer comedy Bend it Like Beckham, she was back this year with the darkly funny ghost comedy It's A Wonderful Afterlife, about a woman whose matchmaking efforts for her daughter lead to murder. Set in the same London-based Indian diaspora as Beckham, It's A Wonderful Afterlife stars Shabana Azmi as a mother who strikes back against all the people who were even mean about her daughter Roopi by murdering them. Soon, though, she's haunted by the ghosts, and in order for them to go to heaven, they must team up to find her daughter a suitable match. All of this leads to a lavish Indian-style wedding reception at which Roopi's friend Linda (Sally Hawkins) takes Carrie-style revenge...

While our Sundance home page is the place for all our coverage from Park City, here is a brief rundown of what's been going on during the last 24 hours, including Matt Singer's interview with "The Freebie" writer/director Katie Aselton and co-star Dax Shepard and reviews of the Chace Crawford drama "Twelve," the Banksy doc "Exit Through the Gift Shop," Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debut "Jack Goes Boating" and the 3D Aussie doc "Cane Toads 2: The Conquest."
Some were puzzled when Sundance accepted "Batman and Robin" director Joel Schumacher's latest film "Twelve." James Rocchi writes that the concern was justified. Here's an excerpt from his review, which can be found in full here:
Directed by Joel Schumacher ("Batman and Robin," "The Lost Boys"), "Twelve" is unquestionably the funniest film at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival; if only it had been made with that intention. "Twelve"'s ham-handed ineptitude...
