Like many children of the 80s, I have a soft spot for the 1985 adventure epic Ladyhawke. It’s directed by the great Richard Donner, with it coming just before The Goonies and Lethal Weapon, but after his time with the Superman franchise. Lavishly produced, it wasn’t a hit in 1985 despite having a top-notch cast that included the late Rutger Hauer (in a rare heroic role), Michelle Pfeiffer, and Matthew Broderick. While some might say the latter was rather improbably cast as an Italian thief in the Middle Ages, that’s not actually the weirdest thing about the movie.
Donner has a reputation for always choosing superb composers for his films. Just think about how iconic Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton’s work is for Lethal Weapon, John Williams’s Superman theme, Jerry Goldsmith’s work on The Omen, and Dave Grusin’s score for The Goonies. Yet, one score...

Two things that make any movie better when added to the mix are monsters and Nic Cage. With Arcadian we get both. The sixty-year-old actor has gone through a significant career shift in his later years. He certainly hasn’t slowed down, starring in five films released last year and popping-in for a quick (and confusing) cameo for DC’s The Flash. Beginning around 2013’s Joe and continuing with films like Mandy, Pig and Dream Scenario he’s gravitated towards smaller films with a focus on character exploration amidst extraordinary circumstances. 2024 continues that trend with a successful spin on the post-apocalyptic genre.

Of the 19.5 million people who tuned into the Oscars on Sunday, 60.3 percent were female, according to Nielsen. While women (and girls age 2+) made up the significant majority of the audience for the 96th Academy Awards (as per usual), it was their lowest percentage since 2016 (58.4 percent female). Yes, even with “Barbie” in the (Dream)house.
Last year’s Academy Awards, also hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, were watched by 18.8 million viewers; 61.1 percent of them were female. The 2022 Oscars, hosted by three women — Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, Amy Schumer — skewed 61.0 percent female. The host-less 2021 program skewed 62.7 percent female; those were the first Covid-impacted Oscars and they settled for all-time low viewership.
The 2021 Oscars remain the high-water mark for representation among nominees, according to the annual study by USC’s Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, and Adobe Foundation. “Nomadland” won Best Picture that year, Best Actress for Frances McDormand, and Best Director for Chloé Zhao.

It was when Alonso Ruizpalacios was in London working as a dishwasher at the (now-extinct) Rainforest Cafe that he came up with the idea for La Cocina.
“I was a drama student and I’d just read the [1957] play The Kitchen by Arnold Wesker and to make the work — which is tough, monotonous and very, very hard — bearable, I’d look at it through the creative lens of the play. If you see how a kitchen works, you realize it is much like the world, like [how] society works. Wesker says for Shakespeare all the world is a stage, whereas for him all the world is a kitchen.”
It was decades later, after success with Mexican films like Museo and A Cop Movie, that Ruizpalacios came back to the idea, taking The Kitchen as the jumping-off point for his English-language debut, transferring the action from late-’50s London to modern-day New York.

A few weeks ago, as The Sweet East started gracing theatres across the States, Reverse Shot ran a sprawling conversation between critic K. Austin Collins and critic-turned-screenwriter Nick Pinkerton. It’s a delightful exchange I can’t recommend enough, both for all it has to uncover about Sean Price Williams’ film––which Pinkerton wrote and which, in my book, was one of last year’s finest––but also for what it sponges of our depressingly shortsighted, quid-pro-quo relationship with the films we watch, what we expect to receive in return for the time we invest in them. “If I wanted to say something,” Pinkerton reflects on the okay-but-what’s-the-message response Sweet East routinely encountered in the months since its Cannes premiere, “I would open my mouth and the words would come out. That’s not what one makes a movie for. You make a movie to go beyond the expression of simple concepts.

Seventeen showcased a new single, “The Meaning of Meeting,” during a concert Macao’s Olympic Sports Center Stadium earlier this week. The K-Pop group shared a video of the song featuring footage from the two-night run.

Selena Gomez is attached to star as Linda Ronstadt in a biopic about the singer-songwriter.
Gomez is set to play the 11-time Grammy winner in a feature that is in the works from producers James Keach (Walk the Line) and Ronstadt’s manager, John Boylan. A director and additional castmembers have yet to be announced for the project, nor does a distributor appear to be on board at the moment.
Ronstadt’s official Facebook and Instagram accounts posted a news story about the movie Wednesday and added the message, “It all started with a simple dream.” Ronstadt and Gomez, who are both of Mexican descent, previously met at the former’s home to discuss the project, according to a note on the website for Boylan’s company Great Eastern Music.
Gomez first teased the film Tuesday by sharing a photo of Ronstadt’s 2013 memoir, Simple Dreams, to her Instagram Stories.

When it was first released in 2013, R.I.P.D. earned a reputation as a “so bad, it’s bad” movie, and the film’s poor box office performance reflected that. However, in the streaming era, it’s gotten a bit of a re-evaluation, and its cult following has been inching the film toward “so bad, it’s good” territory. The original film starred Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, and Mary–Louise Parker. At the time of the movie’s opening, Reynolds told us it was an amazing cast to work with. America's Family comes at the right time as the conversation around the deportation of undocumented immigrants is resumed with the GOP planning to take back the White House in 2024. Now streaming on many platforms, America's Dream puts faces to those affected by the political game. Produced by The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (Chirla) through their Chirla Liberty Film division, the film plays like an educational film shown at school. Regardless, the movie is a gripping tale of a family torn apart by careless policies, told in a positive light.

The year 2023 was an eventful year for filmmaking, but several independent movies stood out among critics and audiences as major successes.
Some films may have passed under the radar with audience, but accolades at film festivals prove that big budgets aren’t necessary for cinematic success.
Notable highlights in this year’s extensive festival offerings range from the thought-provoking courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall, directed by Justine Triet, Nicolas Cage’s surreal comedy Dream Scenario with its nightmare twist, to Celine Song’s romantic drama Past Lives featuring Greta Lee and Teo Too in leading roles.
Deadline’s recommendations, which in addition include Divinity, A Thousand and One, Godland, Poor Things, American Fiction and others that you may have missed, should be added to your end-of-year watch lists.

2023, the year of the Barbenheimer double bill, spoiler: neither of them feature in my top ten, but what a year for getting people excited about the cinema again. Films have always been such a huge, influential and guiding part of my life and I hope this epic mastermind of filmmaking and marketing will ensure more future film lovers. As always, I wish I had watched more films and deciding on my top ten always brings me a certain level of angst as I have long relied on the medium to take me away from real life, yet simultaneously allow me to reflect on the themes within and their relatability to my own existence and the world I live in. The films that have made my list are those that have sat with me in both my waking and sleeping moments. They come back to me when I am least expecting...

Bayard Rustin is one of the most important figures in modern American history whom many people knew nothing about — until now. Netflix’s Rustin, and its towering central performance from Emmy-winning actor Colman Domingo, serves to add his story back into the history books, particularly Rustin’s mentorship of Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and his role as the architect of the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
The reason Rustin is absent from mainstream history is made all too clear in the biopic, directed by George C. Wolfe: He was openly gay and was forced to the sidelines because his sexuality was considered too taboo for public leadership — and was also seen as a threat to King’s image as other Civil Rights leaders worked to gain equality for Black Americans.

Dream Scenario is more of a nightmare for Nicholas Cage’s character, in this darkest of comedies from Norwegian writer/director Kristoffer Borgli, a social satire commenting on the power and irrational nature of social media. While Cage’s character is not having a good day, actor Nicholas Cage looks like he is having a grand old time, relishing this role as a hapless guy at the center of this outside-the-mainstream dark comedy.
Like his role as a backwoods recluse in Pig, Cage is anything but prettied up for this part, playing an aging, balding professor whose ordinary guy life is upended when random people start seeing him in their dreams.
At first, Cage’s middle-aged academic is sort of flattered by the attention, although he has done nothing to cause his dream appearances. The biology professor...

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

A man of great skill in his field suddenly begins to lose control of his image as people co-opt his likeness and rip it out of context. The icon begins to outstrip the individual, complicating his ability to gain recognition for the work he wants to be known. That’s the tragedy of Paul Matthews in Dream Scenario, and it resounds all the more because it contains echoes of the journey undergone by the actor who brings him to life: Nicolas Cage.
