Martin also hinted at coming announcements of the show’s cast as well as the progress of bringing the first of his three Dunk & Egg novellas to life.
In April 2023, HBO announced it had ordered the show, fully titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. From the strange and wicked and peculiar mind of Greek mastermind Yorgos Lanthimos comes another disquieting new film that will disturb even more people. Only a few months after premiering Poor Things at the 2023 Venice Film Festival (here's my review of that one), Lanthimos is back on the festival circuit with his next film titled Kinds of Kindness. It's nearly three hours in total and instead being of one, long film it's three different stories cut together into a triptych feature that plays more like a mashup of funky "Black Mirror" ideas than something more straightforward. As expected with Lanthimos, it's proper mindfuckery of the highest order. Three weird stories that most probably won't enjoy watching because they're so strange and unsettling and don't follow the typical cinematic narratives most are familiar with. In fact, I'd say Kinds of Kindness is Yorgos Lanthimos's Twilight Zone. Sort of? Maybe? Many bizarre...

XYZ Films has acquired U.S. rights to the classic Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title “The World is Yours” directed by Romain Gavras from StudioCanal and to the TIFF hit film “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” directed by Simon Hawkins and Zeke Hawkins. After his famed role as Don Draper on AMC’s critically acclaimed drama series Mad Men, Jon Hamm has experienced a particularly peculiar career transition in recent years. Also known for his work in Sucker Punch & Top Gun: Maverick, the actor, 53, has acted in both highly regarded film and TV roles during his career.
But did you know, nestled within his portfolio of work, there lies a film that has almost slipped through the cracks of cinematic memory?
John Hamm in Stolen | 2 Bridges Productions
In 2009, he took on the role in Stolen, a frequently overlooked chapter of Hamm’s life that true cinephiles may recall. Though the actor’s renowned charm and depth could elevate any role, this murder mystery remarkably stood as an endeavor that slipped past audiences and critics alike.

The Harry Potter star is leading Death Valley with Welsh actress Gwyneth Keyworth (Black Mirror) for the BBC.

BBC Studios is producing and distributing, and filming will begin next month.

British actor Janet Montgomery has landed a starring role as a young Faye Dunaway in Jonathan Baker’s supernatural love story “Fate,” a film that is shooting in Vancouver for Baker Entertainment.
The film will toggle between a yesteryear version of the character (Montgomery) and a present-day incarnation (Dunaway), spanning much of the protagonist’s entire lifetime. “Fate” revolves around a firefighter (Brandon Routh) who connects with a stranger from the past Tilly (Montgomery) while he’s healing at a rehabilitation center and is transported through time to find the only thing saving his soul — his realization of true love, according to a producer’s logline.
Highland Film Group is selling rights to the $10 million film, which also stars Harvey Keitel, at the Cannes Marche.
Dunaway is on the ground in Cannes, where HBO screened the much-anticipated biographical documentary “Faye.”
Montgomery was cast out of hundreds of actors vying for the role.

It’s one of those perfect Cannes mornings. The sun is shining, there’s a slight breeze off the sea and the streets are not yet stuffed with pedestrians hustling towards screenings or official festival business. Lucas Bravo matches the city’s calm energy when he emerges from a back room of an airy second-floor apartment just a stone’s throw from the Croisette. He takes a seat on the sofa opposite The Hollywood Reporter for what will be his first conversation about his Cannes Film Festival selection, The Balconettes.
Writer, filmmaker and actress Noémi Merlant, known for Portrait of a Lady on Fire, directed Balconettes, which centers on a Marseille neighborhood during a summer heat wave. Three roommates gleefully meddle in the lives of their neighbors from their balcony until a late-night drink turns into a bloody affair. Netflix’s “Black Mirror” returns to the Emmy Awards after a four-year break with its sixth season that premiered back in June 2023. The trajectory of the Charlie Brooker anthology series at the Emmys has been a tumultuous journey, particularly in recent years. The science-fiction dystopia used to dominate the limited/movie genre, winning Best Television Movie for three consecutive years at its height, before the Television Academy ruled that it must compete for the drama categories for its fifth season in 2020, ending its streak. Then the following year, the top category for limited series was changed to Best Limited or Anthology Series, placing “Black Mirror” back into the genre, but in the more competitive limited series race rather than the standalone television movies.
Despite the many radical switches, the program has managed an impressive eight wins out of 14 nominations overall. With its new string of six anthology episodes that star various actors including Salma Hayek,...

Science fiction creators never cease to amaze us with their unbridled flights of fancy. Whether it's 'soft' sci-fi, which emphasizes philosophical and social issues in imaginative and futuristic settings, or 'hard' sci-fi, which focuses specifically on the scientific component of futuristic scenarios, it's always highly inventive conceits, crazy plot twists, and mind-blowing depth of thought. Luckily, Netflix is full of great shows in the sci-fi genre. Here are ten shows streaming this May whose concepts absolutely blew us away.

To call Black Mirror a modern-day Twilight Zone is a failure to comprehend the metaphor of the series title.
A black mirror is the reflective black screen you stare into whenever your TV, phone, or laptop is turned off. It's whatever is left of the dream, the fantasy, that technology feeds you after you turn the mechanism off.
In other words, nothing.
The show's creator, Charlie Brooker, seems fascinated by the nightmare of our technologically driven society.
Since the show debuted in 2011, when AI was merely a speck on the horizon, we have transcended Brooker's nightmares of what we might become.
We have embraced AI to the point that we find human interaction boring, stressful, and anti-climactic compared to hyperbolic simulations of the human experience.
To watch Black Mirror's earlier seasons and to enter its universe is to see the worst aspects of ourselves reflected -- to experience the...

The 2024 BAFTA TV Awards very much celebrated the best of British TV tonight as the majority of big-name stars and more recognizable shows fell away to British shows and stars. The likes of “Succession” and “The Last of Us” went home empty-handed at the Royal Festival Hall. “Top Boy,” “The Sixth Commandment,” and “Such Brave Girls” claimed the three big prizes at the ceremony hosted by comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett.
“Top Boy,” Netflix’s hit show about two London drug dealers dealing with gang violence in East London, won Best Drama Series over “The Gold,” “Happy Valley,” and Emmy hopeful “Slow Horses.” Producers Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind came backstage to discuss their victory, which came for the fifth and final season of the fan favorite.

Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

It was a night of surprises at the BAFTA TV Awards, with “The Crown” and “Black Mirror” failing to pick up any awards while “Succession” walked away with only one for Matthew Macfadyen for best supporting actor.
Macfadyen did not attend the awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall, prompting Helena Bonham Carter, who presented the category, to walk off with the iconic gold BAFTA mask with the promise she would get it to Macfadyen.

Prime Video is gearing up for the heist of the century with Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner. The streamer has given a series order for the new drama Haven, about an ordinary office worker who finds herself at the center of a high-stakes crime.
“A typical workday at a pension fund investment company, Lochmill Capital, is upended when violent thieves burst in and force Zara (played by Turner) and her best mate Luke (Saltburn’s Archie Madekwe) to execute their demands,” reads the synopsis. Over the past decade, Black Mirror has revolutionized science fiction on the big and small screen. Modern sci-fi is down-to-earth and realistic – stories about the future warn the audience that humanity will pay a high price for the immense development of technology.
The best episodes of the series and a dozen of its clones scare us with the introduction of social ratings, strengthening the capabilities of VR, and even raising children in capsules. Science fiction, as it was interpreted by the writers in the mid-twentieth century, has simply disappeared.
The animated film Mars Express, which was shown for the first time in Cannes to great acclaim, is the classic science fiction that is not limited to a fantastic convention, but imagines an entire new and unusual world on the screen.
What is Mars Express About?
In the year 2200, human detective Aline and her robot partner Carlos investigate a series of strange incidents.

Exclusive: This Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards will “celebrate and remember the power of storytelling” at a “challenging” time for the industry, according to the new chair of the 77-year-old body.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline in the days leading up to the London ceremony, Sara Putt, who replaced Krishnendu Majumdar last year, said the awards will partly act as a tonic against the bad times, allowing “a community to come together, network, and be creative and supportive of each other.”
She acknowledged that 2023 was a “challenging year for many in the industry, whether freelancers or small indies,” coming a few months after BAFTA research found one third are considering leaving.
“We [at BAFTA] have many roles to play and it is important when times are hard to celebrate and remember the power of storytelling,” Putt said.

Exclusive: Prince William and the recovering Kate Middleton will not be in attendance at this Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards.
Deadline has learned that the Duke of Cambridge, who has been the film and TV org’s president since 2010, will instead record a video message that will be played during the ceremony, for which nominees include four actors from The Crown.
William attended the BAFTA Film Awards in February alone as his wife was recovering from illness, and we are told it is not unusual for the pair to only attend one of the two major BAFTA awards ceremonies in a calendar year.
William has been attending some engagements recently but Middleton is currently recovering from cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. She revealed the news around six weeks ago via a video message, stating that doctors had found the cancer during tests after an operation. There had been speculation about the...

Game of Thrones was a phenomenon back when it first aired. The HBO series, based on George Rr Martin’s novels, would go on to enthrall fans for years, making fans fall in love with Westeros (not with its inhabitants though). It all seemed to be going well, until, well…, Season 8 happened. The fandom, which couldn’t contain its excitement for the culmination of the series, was not to be found after the finale of the show aired. HBO knew they had messed up, and they are now taking steps to set things right, including hiring Black Mirror director, Owen Harris.

Some breaking news from Westeros: The Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has added a major talent from Black Mirror to serve as its debut season’s lead director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Owen Harris has boarded the HBO drama as an executive producer and will also direct the first three episodes, establishing the directorial vision for the series. Harris is best known for helming two of Black Mirror‘s finest episodes — “Be Right Back” and the widely acclaimed “San Junipero.”
In addition, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ episode count has now been revealed: The first season will be six episodes, making for a tighter opener than the 10-episode first seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The run time seems appropriate given Knight is an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s 160-page novella The Hedge Knight rather than one of his 900-page epic novels.
