You know you’re getting old when your favorite movie stars are starting to play characters afflicted with dementia. Arriving shortly on the heels of Knox Goes Away, featuring Michael Keaton as a hitman suffering from the condition, is Adam Cooper’s neo-noir thriller starring Russell Crowe as an ex-cop whose mental condition has deteriorated so dramatically that he’s forced to leave notes plastered throughout his apartment, Memento-style. Despite the plot element’s familiarity, it’s still the most intriguing element of Sleeping Dogs, a sluggishly rendered mystery that audiences will have long stopped caring about before it reaches its conclusion.
Crowe plays Roy Freeman, a former homicide detective whose sad state of being is immediately signified not only by those notes offering the simplest of reminders but also the stack of Hungry-Man frozen dinners in his freezer. He’s wearing a large bandage on his head, the remnant...

What does a transporter even do? In the "Transporter" action-thriller film series, Jason Statham plays Frank Martin, the titular transporter who acts as a driver-for-hire, who moves packages for selective clients without any questions asked. Martin is not your average transporter, as his impressive military background grants him an edge during combat, which is an inevitability when such high risk is involved. Martin strives to maintain a clearly defined double life with little to no overlap and expects his clients to adhere to his incorrigible personal code, which includes never altering the deal or opening client packages, and absolutely no names.
At first glance, the watch order for the "Transporter" series seems pretty straightforward, with four movies etching out Martin's arc and the shenanigans that ensue because of his unique occupation. However, for the sake of continuity, the release date order needs to be shifted around a bit, while one...

[This story contains spoilers for Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire]
Rebel Moon star Ed Skrein has created his most memorable villain yet in Admirable Atticus Noble, and he found inspiration from the unlikeliest source: Olivia Colman.
Alongside Sofia Boutella’s Kora, the English actor is the de facto co-lead of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon ensemble, as his Admiral Noble commandeers the Veldt farming village that Kora, a former Imperium soldier turned fugitive, now calls home. This hostile takeover prompts Kora to put together a team to combat Noble and his vast army, and so it quickly becomes apparent that the two-part Netflix film series will center on Noble and Kora’s blood feud. And considering that Noble’s body has android-like modifications, their surface-level dynamic is somewhat similar to Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, but instead of going to that obvious place for inspiration, Skrein took a major left turn.
“I adopted this sing-songy, almost thespian voice. So I...

Stars: Henry Golding, Sam Neill, Noomi Rapace, Daniela Melchior, Claudio Del Falco, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Anastasia Doaga | Written by Thomas Dunn | Directed by Camille Delamarre
Henry Golding and Noomi Rapace headline this hitman mystery thriller from director Camille Delamarre. Sadly, Assassin Club isn’t going to do either of them any favours and the only mystery about it is how it got made in the first place.
Golding plays Morgan, one of those international assassins who’s quite happy to murder for a living, as long as his targets are certifiable bad guys like drug lords or sex traffickers. He receives his orders from Caldwell (Sam Neill), his handler-slash-mentor, and otherwise enjoys a quiet life with his girlfriend Sophie (Daniela Melchior), a primary school teacher who remains blissfully ignorant of his extra-curricular activities. However, all that changes when Morgan accepts a contract to take out seven international assassins, only to discover...

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows on HBO. With an eight-season run, it provided many fans with the ups, downs, and bloody battles that come with political upheaval in the fantasy world created by writer George R.R. Martin.
While there were several cast changes over the years, one of the show’s more noticeable changes was that of the character Daario Naharis. While originally played by actor Ed Skrein in season three, Daario was played by Michiel Huisman after that. What was the reason for this particular cast change? Skrein says the answer is complicated.

And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

As we head into the last week of September, let’s look ahead at what’s coming to Amazon Prime in October. It’s the usual mix of great newly-licensed titles arriving at the top of the month and a range of original movies and TV shows dropping throughout the upcoming weeks. But, what with it being spooky season, this time Prime’s October haul is specifically geared towards giving you some scares during Halloween.
For starters, horror fans will not want to miss the launch of Blumhouse’s “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series with four original films going up across October. The first duo, Black Box and The Lie, land on Prime on October 6th. Then, a week later on the 13th, both Evil Eye and Nocturne debut. Anything with Blumhouse behind it is usually worth checking out, so make sure not to miss those.

Without a marquee English-language title to boost overall performance, French films in 2018 saw a precipitous drop in overseas admissions, totaling 40M versus 2017’s 82.5M. That 52% tumble is matched by a 51% slide in receipts to 237M euros, export body Unifrance reported today in Paris.
In its findings, Unifrance said it was clear that 2018 “was a disappointing year overall, with certain films performing below forecasts.” These annual ups and downs have become somewhat commonplace owing to the production cycle and the fact that animation and French movies produced in English skew performance in particular years.
Over the past few, such films as Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, Leap! Le Petit Prince, Taken 3, The Transporter Refueled and Lucy have been the strongest earners outside the Hexagon. Many of those have in common that they hail from Luc Besson’s now beleaguered EuropaCorp, which, despite the struggles it is facing,...

The three French majority productions playing in competition in Venice are entirely different from one another in style and tone, and even more so in terms of their American distribution strategies.
Both Jacques Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers” and Olivier Assayas’ “Double Lives” will be released under significantly different conditions, while David Oelhoffen’s “Close Enemies” will hit the Lido still looking for a buyer. Taken all together, however, these three cases offer a reasonable snapshot of the current U.S. market for French cinema.
Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers” stands as the outlier, one of the rare French productions to land U.S. distribution before the cameras ever rolled. L.A.-based production company Annapurna Pictures came on board in May 2017 and announced that it would release the English-language Western through its nascent distribution arm.

As the film distribution landscape keeps evolving, distributors of foreign language fare in the United States are struggling to keep up with a brave new world. French cinema, a niche favorite of American audiences for decades, is struggling to stay in the game — and right now, its future is uncertain.

But it’s not for lack of effort. Thanks to a number of initiatives headed up by UniFrance – a government-supported body that operates with the sole aim of promoting French cinema throughout the world – French films are fighting to find new life at the U.S. box office.

Led by the Disney/Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” and “Trolls” (20th Century Fox/DreamWorks Animation), the Top 10 box office continues to be strong. And with three new wide releases, totals could be 20 percent over last year.
Those new films — “Arrival” (Paramount), “Almost Christmas” (Universal), and “Shut In” (EuropaCorp) — won’t top the second-week blockbusters. Even if “Doctor Strange” and “Trolls” each drop 50 percent, they’d gross $42 million and $23 million, respectively. None of the new titles are likely to cross $20 million, though “Arrival” and “Almost Christmas” could come close.
This weekend gets an added boost from Veteran’s Day on Friday, a Federal holiday that gives many school kids the day off. That will boost all grosses, but particularly “Trolls” and also the already well-received “Doctor Strange.”

The Hollywood Reporter learned yesterday that Ed Skrein has signed on for a major role in 20th Century Fox's highly ambitious adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's popular manga series, Alita: Battle Angel. 3x Academy Award-winner James Cameron (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) & long-time collaborator Jon Landau will produce the project with Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) in the director's chair. The story takes place in the 26th century and picks up shortly after a scientist discovers a female cyborg in a scrapyard with no memories of her past, save for her lethal marital-arts training. She then uses this knowledge to become a bounty hunter and track down the worst of the worst. Skrein will portray one of her potential targets, a villainous cyborg named Zapan, who is in possession of a weapon known as the Damascus blade. He’s dabbled in the realm of superhuman mercenaries with middling reboot The Transporter Refueled, not to mention going toe-to-toe with the Merc With a Mouth himself in Deadpool; now, Ed Skrein is bound for the dystopian future initially dreamed up by manga artist Yukito Kishiro for Alita: Battle Angel.
News hails from The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that Skrein has closed a deal to join the long-gestating adaptation as, you guessed it, a villain – specifically Zapan, a nefarious cyborg who holds control of a powerful weapon called the Damascus blade. Details are thin beyond that; all we know for sure is that he’ll be rubbing shoulders with Maze Runner actress Rosa Salazar, who is attached to the title role of a female cyborg, Christoph Waltz and Preacher star Jackie Earl Haley.

Box office is laboring this weekend; that’s par for the Labor Day holiday course. This year, the weakness stems almost entirely from the failure of new studio releases, with “The Light Between Oceans” (Disney) and “Morgan” (20thCentury Fox) flailing.
Holdovers, however, are doing better. Also helping the cause are two limited-release films, CBS Films’ “Hell or High Water” and Pantelion’s “No Manches Frida,” both handled by Lionsgate for their partners.

There have, throughout cinema history, been some excellent late-appearing sequels. Only last year we got Creed, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Force Awakens, respectively released 9, 30 and 32 years after their predecessors, while this year we’ve got or are getting both 10 Cloverfield Lane and Everybody Wants Some, two ‘spiritual sequels’ already receiving ecstatic reviews from critics.
Long-delayed sequels aren’t always worth the wait, however. Last year we also got Dumb and Dumber To and The Transporter Refueled, while already 2016 has dropped the immensely disappointing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny on us.
More News From The Web
These are the kind of sequels that were better off just staying unmade, the kind that you wish you hadn’t ever gotten excited over in the first place. Seriously, they were that disappointing.
So on that note, join us as we look at ten more long-delayed sequels that definitely weren’t worth the wait.

Russian helmer Alex Mizgiryov caught our attention back in December with the first teaser for his upcoming period set action film Duelist (Дуэлянт). Telling the tale of an 1800's roaming duelist-for-hire that first teaser was slick, stylish, and enormously entertaining stuff. And it has now been followed by a full trailer that is even moreso. Pyotr Fyodorov (The Darkest Hour) Vladimir Mashkov (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Behind Enemy Lines), Martin Wuttke (Cloud Atlas, Inglourious Basterds) and Yuri Kilokolnikov (The Transporter Refueled) all star and we can only hope that this one turns up on the festival circuit soon. Check out the trailer below. [Thanks to Sergey for the tip!]...

Callous, crass, unpleasantly smug. Supposes it’s being edgy because its protagonist swears a lot, but it’s like a child saying bad words just to be naughty. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

The more I think about this movie, the more I dislike it. And I only just saw it last night, less than 24 hours ago. Gimme a few more days, and who knows how much I’ll hate it. Maybe this is the sort of movie people are referring to when they say you need to switch your brain off to enjoy it. “Don’t think about Deadpool too much! You’ll ruin it for yourself.”
This is not the sort of recommendation I will ever give a film.
The opening credits of Deadpool are pretty darn brilliant, and you don’t...

The Razzies, aka the Golden Raspberry Awards, are the annual “anti-Oscars”, celebrating the very “worst” that cinema has to offer. Though the official nominations have already been announced, they were really off the mark, so let’s correct that, combing through 2015 for the most agonisingly awful performances that deserve to be recognised as such.
The actual awards tend to target what’s fashionable to hate rather than the genuinely worse movies and performances of the year, hence why Twilight has been repeat-nominated in the past (it’s bad, but not that bad), and this year, Adam Sandler and Kevin James were picked on despite being far from the worst.
In fact, it’s a testament to some of the shoddy performances we’ve seen this past year that, despite starring in three terrible movies in 2015 (The Cobbler, Pixels and The Ridiculous 6), Sandler’s work was more dull...

I not going to hide the fact I’m a huge Transporter fan, from the very first movie to the more recent, if little seen here in the UK, TV show, I’ve enjoyed [to various extents] each and every entry in the franchise. My only worry was that no-one connected to the original films, apart from Luc Besson, had any part of this film… But then that was also the case with the series, and I really enjoyed that!

2015 may have seen ridiculously acclaimed movies like Inside Out (98%), Spotlight (97%) and Mad Max: Fury Road (97%) come our way, but more importantly, now that Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip has finally hit cinemas, we can run down the most critically-savaged offerings of the year.
It’s a testament to the cinematic dreck that arrived this year that not a single movie above 10% made this list: that’s right, the likes of Fantastic Four, Pixels and The Transporter Refueled apparently weren’t terrible enough to truly be among the worst of the year.
Granted, a few of these movies are, to be polite, “specialist interest”, or rather, so awful and low-flying on the cinematic radar that you may not even have heard of them, but those poor critics who did see them had almost nothing good to say.

Even though Halloween will soon be behind us, that doesn’t mean November is without a few terror-filled tricks up its sleeve, particularly when it comes to genre films arriving on VOD throughout the month. Things kick off in grand style with the release of the creature feature Lavalantula courtesy of Alchemy, as well as the latest anthology, Mexico Barbaro, featuring eight Mexican directors coming together to give us their unique takes on various folklore and traditions.
Other films hitting VOD in November include The Hallow, Wrecker, Condemned, Deep Dark, Uncanny, Crumbs, Applesauce and the social media inspired thriller, #Horror.

In what can only be described as an incredibly smart career move, Game Of Thrones star Natalie Dormer is moving into the realm of generating her own material, as it’s been announced that her new movie project In Darkness is being packaged for sale at the American Film Market, by Xyz Films. With Dormer attached to the lead role, the film boasts the return to the big screen of writer-director Anthony Byrne (Short Order), who has been focusing on directing television drama in recent years.
With apparent, distant echoes of Terence Young’s 1967 film Wait Until Dark, In Darkness features a blind musician who finds herself dragged into the darker corners of London when she hears a brutal murder being committed in a neighbouring property. Though it initially appears that she is very much out of her depth, we soon discover that her pursuit of revenge has a greater...

As we await the fate of Queen Margaery on HBO's Game of Thrones, the actress who portrays her is keeping busy. According to Deadline, Natalie Dormer has signed on to star in a film called In Darkness, a psychological revenge thriller from director Anthony Byrne that Dormer wrote alongside the director.
The pic centers on a blind musician (Dormer) who gets pulled into London’s dark underbelly after she hears a murder committed in the apartment above her. As she becomes embroiled in this violent and murky world, it appears she is out of her depth — until we realize she has been following her own path of revenge for some time.
Sounds like it's maybe a twist on Hitchcock's Rear Window, except with sound instead of sight playing a major factor this time. Former Game of Thrones actor Ed Skrein (who played Daario Naharis before moving on to The Transporter Refueled...

Malachi Smyth’s sci-fi thriller topped the latest Brit List.
Sci-fi thriller Gateway 6, which topped the most recent Brit List of the best unproduced screenplays, has been acquired by Altitude Film Sales for international sales and will introduce the project to buyers at American Film Market (Afm) (Nov 4-11).

The project marks the feature debut of director Tanel Toom, whose The Confession was Oscar nominated in 2011.
The Gateway 6 cast includes Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man) soon to be seen in Oliver Stone’s Snowden and Ed Skrein (The Transporter Refueled) who has just completed a major role as lead villain Ajax in upcoming superhero film Deadpool, opposite Ryan Reynolds.

The film, written by Malachi Smyth, is described as combining “the solitary abandonment of Moon with the claustrophobic atmosphere of Das Boot and the ‘fight to survive’ instincts of Alien”.

Let me tell you about my personal history with M. Night Shyamalan. When I was 10 years old, I watched his third film Signs for the first time, and it changed my life. Signs was the first film to make me love films, to want to spend my life doing something with films. It was the first film that I watched and immediately understood and grasped onto the subtext and themes of the film, and the fact that a film could do that blew my tiny mind.
Before then, I had always loved film, but I had always watched them only taking in what was explicitly on screen. M. Night Shyamalan then became the first director I got into, as I went back and watched...

Oh man, if you're a regular moviegoer, September has been rough. A Walk in the Woods? The Transporter Refueled? Before We Go? It's a whole world of no out there, but fortunately, things are about to get better: The Toronto Film Festival begins today, and its eclectic collection of studio movies, Oscar contenders, and sure-to-surprise sleeper hits will give you plenty to look forward to. Your trusty Vulture team will be on the ground covering these titles, but which ten do we expect will generate the most hype? Let's take a look.First, though, a disclaimer: Though this list encompasses ten films that are world-premiering in Toronto, we're just as anxious to see and cover a few other titles that made their film-festival debuts over the past week at Venice and Telluride. Expect our thoughts on Eddie Redmayne's performance in The Danish Girl, for example, or the sinister Johnny Depp...

Updated: Predictions at the bottom of this post have been updated as final theater counts have arrived. The text of today's forecast article has not been edited and the early predictions are listed at the bottom of this article for comparison. It has been slow-going at the box office as of late. This past four-day, Labor Day weekend haul came in at just $85.7 million for the top twelve, the worst Labor Day weekend result since 2004 where films such as Paparazzi, Wicker Park, Vanity Fair and The Cookout all cracked the top ten. Remember them? Things actually got worse the following weekend back in 2004, and it looks as if this year won't be any different, despite the efforts of new releases such as M. Night Shyamalan's micro-budget horror The Visit and Screen Gems' The Perfect Guy, led by Michael Ealy, Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut and "True Blood" star Rutina Wesley.
