We're big fans of the horror genre here at /Film. In my humble opinion, it's the best of the film genres — one that can be molded, sculpted, and altered to fit into different-sized packages. Horror can be therapeutic. It can elicit emotions in us that remind us we're still alive and kicking. Like Nicole Kidman in that annoying AMC ad, we come to this place for magic. We come to horror movies to love, to cry, to care. Because we need that, all of us. With that in mind, we're unleashing a new monthly feature where we highlight the best horror movies to stream this month. So let's get ready to scream/stream.

Nostalgia is a funny thing. From the unexpected resurgence of vinyl to modern-day flip phones, it’s pretty clear that the technical limitations of the past can often inspire the stylish trends of the future. One of my favorite examples of this is the ongoing analog horror craze, as I find it fascinating how many of the genre’s major creators appear to have been born after the decline of VHS tapes and eerie PSAs.
It’s almost like there’s a subconscious understanding that some stories are best told through fuzzy visuals and heavily compressed audio, which is why I appreciate flicks like Anthony Cousins’s Found Footage throwback Frogman, a cryptozoology-inspired scary movie that dares to incorporate lo-fi aesthetics into its storytelling during a time when most studios encourage filmmakers to make their projects look as generically slick and polished as possible. And if you also enjoyed Frogman...

HeBGB TV was among my favorite films I saw at Salem Horror Fest earlier this year, so I’m delighted that the frenetic horror-comedy anthology has made its way to Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting’s streaming service Screambox in time for Halloween.
In my review, I called it “a high-camp blend of the wistful glow of Wnuf Halloween Special, the uninhibited hyperactivity of Rick and Morty‘s “Interdimensional Cable” episodes, and the absurd unpredictability of Adult Swim’s Too Many Cooks.”
What I didn’t mention was all nods to genre favorites peppered throughout the film.
Here are 17 horror references in HeBGB TV.
1. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
HeBGB TV’s opening credits are inspired by the Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers title sequence, which perfectly captures the autumnal atmosphere.
2. Creature from the Black Lagoon
The boy in the opening scene is playing with a Creature from the Black Lagoon figure.

Many horror tales like "Late Night with the Devil" warn against succumbing to the bright, blinding spotlights of fame, but few mirror its structure. "Ghostwatch," "Wnuf Halloween Special," or the "Public Television of the Dead" episode of Shudder's "Creepshow" are comparison points, as Cameron and Colin Cairnes unleash evils upon a nightly talk show's most important episode. It's a period throwback to 1970s horror vibes with mentions of Vincent Price or Ed and Lorraine Warren (although they've made a comeback thanks to James Wan) that eerily recreates the experience of being on a bustling Sweeps Week set. Expect something more cable-access creepy than ratings-breaking scary, taking its time through interview segments before the devil raises all kinds of hell in front of a live studio audience.

A while back, we shared the news that director Chris Lamartina had unveiled a poster for his new movie Out There Halloween Mega Tape, the long-awaited sequel to Wnuf Halloween Special (buy it Here). Out There Halloween Mega Tape is now making the festival rounds, and is also available to purchase on DVD and VHS! You can secure your copy of the movie at This Link.
If you’re not familiar with Wnuf Halloween Special, that movie was made to look like it was a VHS recording of a TV station’s long-lost 1987 Halloween special… a special that had gone terribly wrong. Between segments of a reporter investigating a haunted house, the movie was packed with faux commercials that perfectly captured the feeling of watching commercial TV in the 1980s
Out There Halloween Mega Tape has the following synopsis:
Available officially for the first time ever. It’s Halloween in your Vcr!

The following contains spoilers for Wnuf Halloween Special.
In 1987, local news station Wnuf held a special publicity stunt on Halloween night. Reporter Frank Stewart, joined by paranormal investigators and a priest, entered the infamous (and presumably haunted) Webber House, an empty home that was the site of a gruesome double murder. Hoping to get some ratings by doing a live call-in séance and an exorcism, Stewart and the others bit off more than they could chew as the event went completely awry. While the televised special ended in confusion, a special VHS tape was discovered years later that showed what really happened that Halloween.
That’s the plot of Wnuf Halloween Special, released in 2013 by director Chris Lamartina. Told in the form of a news broadcast and follow-up special that were taped off TV, the found footage movie has garnered a cult following due to its unique 80s throwback style,...

We’re in the last remaining days of October, meaning many of us will be trying to cram in as many horror movies as possible between now and Halloween. For my last round of Shudder picks this month, I thought I’d go with a much looser theme: there’s nothing that ties these titles together except that they’re really good movies I think you should watch. Some you may recognize, others may be less familiar to you. All of them are worth streaming on Shudder.
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935, dir. James Whale) It’s not officially October without the Universal Monsters, so big thanks to Shudder for adding most of the big ones to their expanding library of streaming options. There’s no wrong choice when it comes to the classics, but I’ll make the case that Universal never got better than The Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale...

There’s a little bit of something for everyone this Tuesday, as May 23rd’s Blu-ray and DVD releases may not be great in number, but they are a stellar bunch of titles all the same. Jordan Peele’s Get Out arrives on both formats this week, courtesy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox is bringing home Logan to 4K Blu-ray as well as standard Blu and DVD discs, too.
For those who might have missed it in theaters, The Great Wall is also being released on Tuesday, as well as the horror anthology Xx, from Magnolia Home Entertainment. Other releases for May 23rd include The Vagrant, Wolf Guy, Wnuf Halloween Special, Voodoo Black Exorcist, and The Magnificent Dead.

There are countless programs that support emerging filmmakers in their development and now up-and-coming horror directors have one of their own. Shudder, a streaming service backed by AMC Networks that specializes in horror content, has just announced the first 11 participants of their inaugural Shudder Labs. Selected from a pool of over 300 applicants, directors are taking part in a week long workshop designed to develop, add and hone their skills as they get ready to take the next step in their careers working in the genre.
“Like a vampire, I feed off of the enthusiasm of young talent; it is invigorating to encounter new voices in the horror genre and to find out what motivates young minds to explore the art of the macabre,” said director and Master-in-Residence Larry Fessenden.
Throughout the course of the program, the fellows will be able to learn from and work with a team of Masters-in-Residence, headed by Shudder curator Sam Zimmerman, Fessenden, writer Clay McLeod Chapman and AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan. The program’s benefits, however, aren’t contained to the program alone. After the filmmakers have left the lab, they will each receive $5000 in grants and be mentored by a Master-in-Residence for an additional year.
Shudder Labs is currently running from June 13th to June 18th at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York.
The filmmakers, and their projects, of the first ever Shudder Labs are:
“As the Dust Settles,” Mike Olenick
An asteroid carrying the seeds of alien life crashes down in the neighborhood where a young couple is buying a house from a dishonest realtor. When the couple settles into their new home, they unpack a secret that will change the lives of everyone in the neighborhood: the truth about what happened to the home’s previous owner.”Mike Olenick focuses on forbidden desire, reproduction, transformation, and outer space in his projects. Mike’s films have streamed on Mubi, aired on Dutch television, and won awards at the Slamdance Film Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival. He studied photography at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and has edited films and videos with Guy Maddin, the Quay Brothers, Kelly Reichardt, Sadie Benning, and Jennifer Reeder.”“Beyond the Darkness,” Shane Wheeler
A modern sorcerer must save his friends from a dark dimension, but to succeed he must overcome his own suicidal depression.
“Trained as a biologist, Shane Wheeler wrote his first screenplay while working on a fishing boat in the Bering Sea. Since then, he’s written, directed, and produced a number of award-winning shorts, as well as features Captive of a Death Mask (2012) & Stabbing with Frank (2016). Wheeler is a filmmaker raised in Brownstown, Michigan.”
“Black Bats,” Rick Spears
Feeling cast out from society, two teens begin a relationship under the belief that they’re transforming into monsters. What begins as a fantasy ends with horrific consequences as they both lose touch with reality.
“Rick Spears is mostly known for his comic book writing, having published eleven graphic novels and numerous comics including Teenager from Mars and Dead West. Rick has also written and directed a handful of award-winning short films. Black Bats will be his first feature.”
“In the Night,” Joshua Erkman
A 24-year-old running from his past starts a new job picking up the dead for a mortuary and begins to suspect powerful sinister forces are closing in on him.
“Joshua Erkman is a Los Angeles based filmmaker, a USC graduate, and drummer for La punk band Lamps.”
“Lovespell,” Courtney and Hillary Andujar
A teenage girl in Hawaii casts a dark spell that unlocks something sinister within herself.
“Courtney and Hillary Andujar are identical twins who grew up at punk shows and in diners in Texas. Courtney is a writer and designer who has collaborated with artists and activists such as Yoko Ono, Paul Chan, and Julian Assange. Hillary is an art director who has worked internationally with Tim Burton, David Lynch, and The Wachowskis.”
“Polybius,” Hunter Stephenson
It’s the summer of 1984 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The only thing booming louder than the arcades is the aircraft over Fort Bragg. A hip babysitter named Tiffany is determined to show the brothers Carmack the parent-free weekend of their lives. But her reality is bleeped when the younger brother, a vidiot ‘sperger named Palmer, is snatched after encountering a pylon-like arcade cabinet. Joined by a skeleton crüe, it’s up to Tiffany to kick ass, chew bubblegum and fore’s destroy this trippy gamer-gateway to hell.
“Hunter Stephenson is a Scottish punk. He is also a writer/producer based east of the Rockies. His recent Noisey doc-series Hot Sugar’s Cold World received the Honorable Mention at Hot Docs 2015, and was executive produced by David Gordon Green, Jody Hill, and Danny McBride.”
“The Eyes,” Will Forbes
In 1970’s Upstate New York, there is a local legend of The Eyes, a spirit in the woods of the Catskill Mountains that consumes the souls of the lost and weary. When the favorite uncle of three local kids dies suddenly and under mysterious circumstances at the edge of those woods, the kids set out on a mission to discover the horrifying truth.
“Will Forbes has been composing and producing music for visual media for nearly a decade, until he realized the best way to achieve his goal of scoring horror films was to start making them himself. Originally from Upstate New York, he currently lives in Inglewood, CA with a cat and a tortoise.”
“The Sound of Darkness,” Melody Cooper
A blind musician and a deaf sculptor are haunted by a woman only they can see and hear, who leads them to take on an epic battle against terrifying legacy of racial violence and evil.
“Melody Cooper is a screenwriter, director and producer of Horror and Afrofuturism, and Winner of the 2016 Women in Cinema International Screenplay Competition with her horror feature Monstrous, which also won Third Place at Slamdance. She is directing the supernatural thriller The Sound Of Darkness this summer.”
“Un-Seen,” Lucy Cruell
Some things once seen, cannot be unseen.
“Lucy Cruell is a graduate with honors from Duke University and Harvard Law School. Lucy has also been a published short story author, film critic for multiple publications, and entrepreneur. Her screenplays and pilots have won over three dozen awards and festivals including Shriekfest. She is now a full time writer, director, and starving artist.”
“What Happens Next Will Scare You,” Chris Lamartina
On the verge of losing their jobs, a group of click-bait journalists struggle to compile their scariest viral videos for a Halloween listicle, but when a cursed entry brings malevolent forces into their reality, our social media junkies must figure out they’re sharing harmful content before they become victims of their own monsters. “Chris Lamartina is a Baltimore filmmaker and has been delivering high concepts on low budgets, blending horror and comedy with such films as “Call Girl of Cthulhu” and “Wnuf Halloween Special” since 2007. With a curious knack for finding humor in the weird, Lamartina’s films have been critically acclaimed-playing film festivals across the globe, and garnering coverage by NPR, the New York Times, and MTV.” Related stories'31' Trailer: Rob Zombie Returns With Carnies Who Have Twelve Hours To Survive10 Horror Filmmakers Overdue to Make New FeaturesThe 20 Best Horror Films of the Last 20 Years...

A few years ago we told you about Wnuf Halloween Special, one of the most unique horror movies ever made. The entire movie is presented as a taped broadcast of a 1987 public access TV news crew's attempt to spend Halloween night doing a live paranormal investigation of a local haunted house. It's not the scariest horror movie ever made, but the commitment to authenticity (there are even commercial breaks filled entirely with fake ads for local businesses) and the premise is just so cool and well executed. And now the minds behind it are back with another high concept project: Wnuf TV28 Presents Frank Stewart Investigates, a vinyl and cassette tape compilation of audio recordings taken from the TV host's investigations prior to the ill fated broadcast of the Wnuf...

It’s no lie that we are huge fans of Wnuf Halloween Special. The film mimics 80’s television to a capital T. If you haven’t seen the film, I’d recommend picking it up and waiting until October to watch it. You can check out our review Here.
Terror Vision Records & Video looks to be putting out the vinyl on October 13th of this year.

A wonderfully weird and comedic love letter to H.P. Lovecraft, Call Girl of Cthulhu is the latest from the director Chris Lamartina, the filmmaker behind last year’s endlessly charming 80’s throwback project, the Wnuf Halloween Special. This time, Lamartina and his co-writer Jimmy George tackle modern relationships and Cthulhu mythologies, resulting in truly one of the more insanely fun and well-conceived low-budget horror movies I’ve seen all year.
Call Girl of Cthulhu follows nice guy Carter Wilcox (David Phillip Carollo), a young artist desperate to lose his virginity and even more desperate to find the perfect girl to lose it to. Carter thinks he finally has found “the one” when he meets a local call girl Riley (Melissa O’Brien), who frequents the apartment building he lives in with his cranky roommate (Nicolette Le Faye). Unfortunately for Carter (and his intended), Riley has been targeted by a group...

You've heard me talk enthusiastically about the Wnuf Halloween Special on The Bloodcast, now, the makers of that "broadcast" have a new film which recently made an east coast festival premiere this month. It's an indie called Call Girl of Cthulhu and my oh my does it look like some grotesque, wet, outlandish offspring of H.P. Lovecraft, Frank Henenlotter and Stuart Gordon. The producers passed a trailer along to us and I'm definitely into seeing what this is about. Chris Lamartina - one of the directors of Wnuf Halloween Special - is at the helm.

Welcome to Halloween 1987- it’s time to watch the Wnuf nightly news with Gavin Gordon (Richard Cutting) and Deborah Merritt (Leanna Chamish), who are bringing us news highlights and some of their very best ghoulish gab because after all, it’s Halloween.
After Gavin and Deborah are done with the news, they toss the broadcast over to field reporter Frank Stewart (Paul Fahrenkopf), who is about to lead a camera crew, a team of psychics and their viewers into the notorious Webber House where years before a young man named Donald went on a killing spree murdering both of his parents in what seemed to be part an occult ritual.
Things begin harmlessly enough for Frank and his ragtag team of paranormal investigators as they search the creepy house looking for answers, but when they begin to suspect they’re not alone, that’s when the Wnuf Halloween Special...

If you're not familiar with the infamous Wnuf Halloween Special, allow me to summarize. On Halloween night, in 1987, public-access television network Wnuf ran a live Halloween special, where they sent one of their reporters and a team of paranormal investigators into the allegedly haunted Webber House - the sight of several grisly murders. The goal was to find out if the house was actually haunted, and the sights and sounds caught on film ended up being so frightening and horrifying that the broadcast was never aired again - all footage thought to be destroyed, immediately thereafter.
Over 25 years later, the footage has been found, and has just been released onto both DVD and VHS - the first time the terrifying special has ever been released, since its original broadcast in 1987. Dare you watch it?
If this sounds and looks like the set-up for a found-footage hoax, well, then you're smarter than I am.

It’s entirely possible that the best new movie for this Halloween season is a scrappy, Diy found-footage effort from Baltimore called Wnuf Halloween Special. Writer-director Chris Lamartina has been toiling in the no-budget horror trenches for awhile, but Wnuf (cowritten by Jimmy George and Pat Storck) could be his hot ticket to cult success. I doubt any other movie in 2013 debuted on VHS before DVD, but that’s just one of the many things that makes Wnuf Halloween Special special. The movie is presented as a taped broadcast of a late-'80s news program where some local anchors are trying their hand at getting as sensational as the big leagues by executing a live, Halloween-night investigation into the supposedly haunted Weber House where a mass murder occurred. The...

These days, it wouldn't be hard to trip and land on a found-footage horror film. The format has really taken off in the past decade with first-time filmmakers like Oren Peli picking up a movie camera and making homemade paranormal magic happen.
The anthology series "V/H/S" recently employed the popular style with a videotape-centric frame tale, and now a new project has surfaced that also references the nostalgic era of mom and pop video stores and schlocky VHS cover art — except this film combines it with the weirdness of public-access television, Satanic panic media coverage, and all things 1980s.
Fictional found-footage film "Wnuf Halloween Special" is billed as a lost local TV program recorded in October of 1987. Boob tube host Frank Stewart takes a team of supernatural investigators into the haunted Webber House — a trope we've seen in horror cinema numerous times.
