Disney has been riding that magic carpet of live-action remakes for quite some time now, truly kicking off the trend with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. From there, we’ve had so-called “updates” of Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, and on and on – none of which really capture the magic of the original animated films. And we highly doubt a real-life Forky wouldn’t be nightmare fuel…
Pete Doctor has been with Pixar since the earliest features, developing the story for and working on the animation of Toy Story. He has since gone on to direct four features for the studio, three of which won the Best Animated Feature Oscar – and that’s just the realm he’d like to stay in, saying live-action remakes just don’t work for what they do. “So much of what we create only works because of the rules of the [animated] world.

The last film Tim Burton directed, 2019's live-action "Dumbo" remake, became something of an accidental metaphor for his career. For its first half, the movie sticks fairly close to Disney's original 1941 animated feature, as the titular elephant with unusually large ears is abused and treated with disdain by the customers at the traveling circus where he resides. When Dumbo's newfound ability to fly makes him the show's star attraction (the point at which the animated film ends), he and his fellow performers are recruited by a greedy and unscrupulous businessman (Michael Keaton) who exploits them at his gaudy amusement park. It's up to Dumbo and his pals to escape the park in search of greener pastures.
It's not a one-to-one analogy, but you can see why, upon reflection, Burton said Disney was a "horrible big circus" and he was its Dumbo. After decades of collaborating, the once visionary filmmaker...

It’s been five years since Tim Burton’s last movie hit cinemas – his live-action take on Disney’s Dumbo. In the intervening years, the director had moved away from feature films, instead entering the streaming game with his massive Netflix hit series Wednesday, imagining the Addams Family’s daughter solving spooky mysteries at a supernatural high school. But now, Burton is officially back on the big screen with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – a long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic comedy, reuniting the director with Michael Keaton’s garrulous ghoul and Winona Ryder’s outsider Lydia Deetz. While sequels can be eyed with skepticism from audiences, make no mistake: this is deeply personal territory for cinema’s greatest goth auteur.

Disney is one of the leading studios in Hollywood, having built its success upon a series of blockbuster animated films back in the day. However, in recent years the studio’s money-spinning and cultural juggernaut IPs have received flack from critics and audiences alike, particularly when it comes to the live-action re-imaginings of its biggest animated hits.
Disney’s Aladdin co-director John Musker talked about the studio’s recent struggles.

Say his name three times. Do it. Unlike Candyman, most people would love to summon Beetlejuice. He’s the Ghost With The Most. The film Beetlejuice became an instant classic when it haunted theater screens in the spring of 1988. Burton’s visual aesthetic, along with the amazing performances by Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, captivated audiences. The film easily grossed over $75 Million at the box office on a $15 Million budget. People loved the character, and he even got a Saturday morning cartoon spin-off that kids loved, but it’s taken thirty-five years for them to get Beetlejuice 2 off the ground!
While, after many false starts, the Beetlejuice sequel has just about finished shooting, believe it or not, work on Beetlejuice 2 began not long after the original movie premiered! We did a whole video that dived into the production history that you can watch here, but here’s the...

The genius behind Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, and the Netflix hit Wednesday, Tim Burton sat for an interview with The Independent. With a discussion ranging from his love for the gothic genre to his upcoming movie Beetlejuice 2, Burton even recalled his time when he attended the California Institute of the Arts animation programme, sponsored by Disney.

"I myself am strange and unusual," Winona Ryder's goth teen Lydia Deetz proclaims in "Beetlejuice," although she could've just as easily been talking about the movie around her. Tim Burton's supernatural comedy was lightning in a bottle when it landed in 1988, a zealously idiosyncratic (and horny!) affair and a welcome remedy to the decade's consumerist mentality. Now, 36 years later (*wipes brow*), a "Beetlejuice" sequel is finally making its way to the big screen at a time when franchises and IPs may be loosening their grip just a little on the media landscape. The question is, will "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" -- as the film is now officially titled -- be part of the problem or will it mark the start of a long, long-awaited creative renaissance for Burton the director?

Touring the riot scene, gravely assessing the devastation, patiently awaiting to play Oswald Cobblepot again. That’s the word from Danny DeVito, who says that if he can get Tim Burton on board, he would absolutely play The Penguin once more.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Danny DeVito expressed interest in returning as The Penguin, saying, “If Tim Burton was directing it, I’d be there in a second. Oswald Cobblepot is my favorite. I had a good time. It’s operatic. I like every once in a while going big, and so I’d do that in a second. We had a ball doing that.” And we’d have a ball watching it, as DeVito chews up every scene he’s in – and nose stuck in his business.

Seeing as Cate Blanchett has been one of the most respected actresses for more than a quarter-century now, it’s best not to set her off. But it’s possible. And while Lydia Tár has her own musings on life, technology and Bach, what might get Cate Blanchett showing disgust than anything is trigger warnings.
Speaking with The Times, Cate Blanchett noted that difficult conversation is necessary in our society but is so rarely implemented, adding that so-called trigger warnings aren’t helping. “Culturally we are terrified of tough conversations. Boss to employee. Employee to boss. Friend to friend. But we need them. We talk about radical candour, but when there’s a trigger warning in front of something you are implying that there is a lack of mutual respect or that the subject hasn’t been properly interrogated.” Oh, we can just hear those words coming out of the mouth of Lydia Tár.

Oscar nominee Colin Farrell cruises the streets of LA in a Corvette with a dog as his passenger in the official trailer for Apple TV+’s Sugar. It’s a peaceful opening scene that quickly devolves into a brutal fight, even as Farrell declares he’s one of the good guys. “California Dreamin'” plays in the background as it’s revealed Farrell’s character is a private investigator who finds the missing.
Joining Farrell in the eight-episode season are Kirby (The Sandman), Amy Ryan (The Wire), James Cromwell (Succession), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Dennis Boutsikaris (Better Call Saul), Nate Corddry (Mindhunter), Sydney Chandler (Don’t Worry Darling), and Alex Hernandez (Invasion). Mark Protosevich created the series and serves as an executive producer along with Farrell, Sam Catlin, Scott Greenberg, Chip Vucelich, and Genre Films’ Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg.
Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and Adam Arkin (The Offer) direct, with Meirelles also executive producing.

On October 23, 1941, "Dumbo" soared into audience members' hearts. With his wide, bright blue eyes and floppy ears as big as his whole body, he quickly stood out as one of the cutest Disney characters ever. Sadly, the playful baby elephant is mocked by others, referred to as "Dumbo" instead of Jumbo Jr., and ridiculed for his oversized ears which give him the ability to fly. In the book "The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney," author Michael Barrier notes that the Walt Disney movies "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia" failed at the box office because World War II disrupted the European markets. A successful film was crucial for the studio's continued survival.
Working with a small budget, the filmmakers came up with what Bosley Crowther of The New York Times called "the most genial, the most endearing, the most completely precious cartoon feature film ever to emerge from the magical brushes of Walt Disney's wonder-working artists.

The Directors Guild will hand out the season’s next big precursor prizes this weekend, and one of the movies the organization might honor is newly available to watch at home.
The contender to watch this week: “American Fiction“
One of the last few Best Picture nominees to hit digital platforms, Cord Jefferson‘s observant directorial debut — part publishing-industry satire, part domestic drama — is now available to purchase on VOD for $19.99. The movie, which earned acting nods for Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown, could pull off a minor surprise and take home Best Adaptation Screenplay on Oscar night, though it would have to beat both “Oppenheimer’ and “Barbie” to do so. Jefferson may also win Best First-Time Feature Director at the DGA Awards on Saturday.
Other contenders:
“Suncoast”: Sitcom veteran Laura Chinn‘s coming-of-age drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month, where the reviews were mixed to positive.

With 2024 only about six weeks old, filmgoers are getting a very interesting family comedy/drama that isn’t a “holdover” from the previous year’s limited Oscar-qualifying run. As with last weekend’s Scrambled, this is the feature film directing debut of a writer/actress, though she’s not working in front of the camera. And this is almost an autobiography, with some name changes and a few names that were real people in the news. Actually, they were in the headlines, so it’s a fictionalized story with a true event as its backdrop, similar to the Jack and Rose romance of Titanic. And it all figures into an engaging “coming of age” story that happened in the sunny, but often turbulent, vacation spot known as Suncoast.
And, as you might have guessed, that spot was down in Florida about twenty years ago. Teenager Doris (Nico Parker) is stressed...

The classic B-movie title Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is getting a remake from Tim Burton and Gillian Flynn. Burton is attached to direct the movie from a script by the Gone Girl scribe.
Warner Bros. is behind the project, which will be a re-imagining of the 1950s genre film. The succinct logline for that earlier film reads: “Turned into a giantess by an alien, a woman (Allison Hayes) finds her husband (William Hudson) in a bar with a floozy (Yvette Vickers).” Nathan Juran directed the pic, which was released by Warners.
Burton is also set to produce the project with Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper. Kai Dolbashian will executive produce.
Burton was last in theaters with Dumbo, which failed to preform at the box office, but he most recently found success with the Netflix series Wednesday and recently wrapped on a Beetlejuice sequel for Waenrs. He is repped by WME.

Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice sequel has landed an official title so nice they named it twice: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
The title was announced on Warner Bros.’ and the sequel’s Instagram (see that post here). The pic comes out on Sept. 6, the post Labor box office horror launchpad weekend made famous by the Burbank, CA lot with the It and Nun franchises. Exhibitors told us that for a blip, due to the actors strike, Warners was contemplating pushing the theatrical release of Beetlejuice 2, however, Burton is making that date after doing a few days of last-minute shots post strike.
The original 1988 movie from Tim Burton grossed $75M domestic, and forged his creative collaboration with Michael Keaton; the two reteaming on Batman and Batman Returns. Let’s also not forget the live-action version of Disney’s Dumbo.
Beetlejuice 2 reunites Keaton with the pic’s original castmembers Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara.

The oldest post I could find for "Beetlejuice 2" in the /Film archives is from 2011, but director Tim Burton and Warner Bros. have been wanting to make a follow-up to the 1988 original for literal decades. As early as 1990, Burton was developing "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian," which would have seen the Deetz family moving to the island state and Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice eventually winning a surfing contest. That version obviously never happened, but ideas for a sequel have been bouncing around Hollywood ever since, and the project has gone through tons of stops and starts and false positives on its way to finally receiving a confirmed theatrical release date of September 6, 2024.
A rocky development alone is not enough of a reason to doubt this movie's quality; plenty of films have been delayed for years and ended up being masterpieces. (Just look at "Mad Max: Fury Road.") But there are a couple...

Woody Harrelson is channeling his “Edge of Seventeen” sensibilities for Sundance film “Suncoast.”
The “True Detective” alum appears in writer-director Laura Chinn’s coming-of-age feature debut “Suncoast” alongside Nico Parker. Inspired by Chinn’s semi-autobiographical story, “Suncoast” follows a teen (Parker) who, while caring for her brother along with her audacious mother (Laura Linney), strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist (Harrelson) who is protesting one of the most landmark medical cases of all time.
Parker and Harrelson’s characters bond over their shared grief, with the title coming from the Suncoast hospital center where Parker’s brother is being treated. Ella Anderson, Daniella Taylor, Amarr, and Ariel Martin also star.
The film is having its world premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category at Sundance 2024. Jeremy Plager, Francesca Silvestri, Kevin Chinoy, and Oly Obst produce the Searchlight Pictures film.
“Suncoast” lead Parker is the daughter of Thandiwe Newtown and Ol Parker.

What do an ogre, a clownfish, a rat, a wooden toy and a robot have in common? They’ve all been the stars of Academy Award-winning films for Best Animated Feature.
Film animation has come a long way since pioneering films such as Walt Disney‘s “Steamboat Willie” (1928) captured the hearts and imagination of a loyal public, making characters like Mickey Mouse a permanent and beloved part of our pop culture. But these films have had a harder time gaining recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1939, at the 11th awards ceremony, Disney received special recognition for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the first ever feature-length animated film, and was bestowed one full-size statuette and seven miniature ones. Two years later, Disney would receive the first competitive Oscars given for an animated film, with “Pinocchio” winning Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “When You Wish Upon a Star.

Walt Disney was the producer and studio mogul who pioneered in the field of animation, proving it could be used for more than just creating amusing shorts for kids. Let’s take a look back at all 19 animated features produced during his lifetime or that he personally worked on, ranked worst to best.
After years producing amusing shorts, most of them staring a lovable mouse named Mickey (voiced by Walt himself), Disney broke new ground with the first feature length animated film: “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937). Both a radical experiment in filmmaking and a revolution in storytelling, it proved cartoons were a viable means of artistic expression. Russian director Sergei Eisenstein, in fact, called it the greatest movie ever made, no small praise for the man who made “Battleship Potemkin” (1925).
With each subsequent feature — “Pinocchio” (1940), “Fantasia” (1940), “Dumbo” (1941), and “Bambi” (1942) — Disney and his team of animators refined their visual and narrative techniques,...

It was an up and down few weeks on “Dancing with the Stars” for NFL athlete Adrian Peterson, culminating in his elimination at the end of “Disney100 Night” in week four. Did he really deserve to be eliminated for the Viennese waltz he performed inspired by the movie “Dumbo”? Watch the routine above, and vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
His “Premiere Night” dance got mixed reviews and a score of 18 out of 30. That actually placed him pretty high on the judges’ leaderboard, and he was ultimately safe from elimination. “Latin Night” was a step back for him. He scored 15 out of 30 and was second to last on the leaderboard. This time he was in the bottom two when viewer votes were added in, but Jamie Lynn Spears was sent home instead. “Motown Night” was a slight step up from there, but he was still struggling with technique.

On past “Disney” nights on Dancing with the Stars, producers have opted to skip eliminating anyone from the competition because why eliminate anyone on such a magical evening? Alas, that wasn’t the case this year. Even though they weren’t the lowest scoring duo of the night, NFL running back Adrian Peterson and pro partner Britt Stewart were sent home after earning 21 points for doing a Viennese Waltz to Baby Mine from Dumbo. Two other couples were in jeopardy — Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) and Peta Murgatroyd, who earned 18 points after making a misstep during their jazz, and, surprisingly, YouTuber Lele Pons and Brandon Armstrong, who scored 22 points for their Rumba. Two out of the last three couples not called safe aren’t necessarily in the bottom two, but they don’t know for certain whether they are or not. “It’s never, ever easy to be in that position,...

It’s that time of the year again: Disney synergy on “Dancing with the Stars.” The top 11 couples will perform to tunes from Disney films on Tuesday’s Disney100 Night. Not to be confused with regular Disney Night or Disney+ Night. Disney100 Night is special because it’s the 100th anniversary of Disney… but nothing’s really different.
But there is a more equitable distribution of dances this week. Gone are, like, six foxtrots or seven cha-chas. No dance style will be performed more than twice on Tuesday, which will also see the season debut of jazz, paso doble, Viennese waltz, waltz and contemporary.
See the full list below.
Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy: paso doble (“Un Poco Loco” from “Coco”)
Alyson Hannigan and Sasha Farber: jazz (“Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast”)

Andy Muschietti's recent superhero flick "The Flash" hoped to lure in audiences with a sprawling story that spans several parallel universes. It was the same approach taken by John Watts in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and Sam Raimi in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," in that all three films assembled multiple versions of certain superhero characters culled from various extant movie franchises. "The Flash" contains the Ben Affleck version of Batman as he appeared in Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," as well as the Michael Keaton version of Batman as he appeared in Tim Burton's 1989 film called merely "Batman." The Flash, he finds, can run so fast that he can travel into alternate timelines.
In the film's climactic final scenes, the Flash -- having time-traveled too much -- unwittingly causes the fabric of reality to rip, allowing cameo appearances from a dozen...

Remember how saying Betelgeuse's name in "Beetlejuice" three times allows you to summon Michel Keaton's titular freelance bio-exorcist? It turns out a similar rule applies to the sequel to director Tim Burton's 1988 supernatural comedy classic. After plans for a follow-up titled "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian" were abandoned in the early 1990s, a second go was made at reviving the project with writer Seth Grahame-Smith. That iteration also fell apart, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on how you feel about Grahame-Smith and Burton's big screen re-imagining of the bizarre cult soap opera "Dark Shadows."
Warner Bros. finally succeeded in its third attempt at getting "Beetlejuice 2" off the ground, pairing Burton, Keaton, and the other returning "Beetlejuice" cast members with Burton's "Wednesday" star Jenna Ortega and creators/writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The film was making steady progress, too, at least until the dual...

The Walt Disney Company is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a hefty new Blu-ray box set containing 100 of its best animated films.

Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. Sure, the studio showed some footage from Disney's upcoming animated movie "Wish," and they announced that "Haunted Mansion" would be hitting Disney+ in October. But there was one other announcement that might be intriguing for anyone who is both a Disney fan and a physical media collector.
This fall, the House of Mouse will be releasing the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, which collects 100 animated films from both Disney and Pixar, reaching as far back as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and up through this summer's "Elemental" from Pixar. Tim Burton and Micheal Keaton’s “Beetlejuice 2” only had a day and a half left of filming when the SAG-AFTRA strike shut production down indefinitely. The Warner Bros.’-backed production started filming in May in London amid the WGA strike.
“I feel grateful we got what we got,” Burton told The Independent in a recent interview. “Literally, it was a day and a half. We know what we have to do. It is 99 per cent done.”
“On this last one, Beetlejuice 2, I really enjoyed it,” the director also said, about how rare it is to work on a big Hollywood tentpole and actually like it. “I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets. It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies.”

Tim Burton has applied his distinct visual style to a multitude of pop culture properties over the years, from “Batman” and “Planet of the Apes” to “Alice in Wonderland” and “Dumbo.” But while the filmmaker continues to put his spin on classic I.P., he has no interest in seeing A.I. software do it for him.
In a new interview with The Independent, Burton recalled being disturbed by seeing an A.I. program draw a series of beloved Disney characters in the style of his whimsically macabre aesthetic.
“They had A.I. do my versions of Disney characters,” Burton said. “I can’t describe the feeling it gives you. It reminded me of when other cultures say, ‘Don’t take my picture because it is taking away your soul.’”
Burton explained that seeing his distinct creative process commodified by computers wasn’t just an insult — it caused a borderline existential crisis.

When Disney finds a trend that makes money, the company will more or less run it into the ground. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe is doing well, it will continue to churn out feature films and TV miniseries until the market is oversaturated. If "Pirates of the Caribbean" is successful, it will try out all the sequels, "Lone Rangers," and "John Carters" they can to emulate the same success. Over the last several years, Disney has struck gold with a series of big-budget remakes of its well-worn animated classics. "Aladdin," "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," "The Little Mermaid," "Dumbo," and multiple others have been remade to the enthusiasm of audiences and to the indifference of critics.

Barbie may be everything, and Ken is just Ken, but what about the people in the Real World they meet along the way? Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, based on the popular dolls, is a hyper-stylized take on the Mattel toys that sees the titular doll journey from Barbie Land to the Real World on a quest of self-discovery.

The influence of classic movies on modern culture is immense, and there remains a high demand for these timeless works, which is why many in the industry viewed Warner Bros. Discovery’s move to lay off key executives and otherwise reduce staffing at Turner Classic Movies with such alarm.
Parrot Analytics’ demand data — which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement — allowed us to compile a list of the top 10 most sought-after movies released before 1970, which form a substantial part of TCM’s catalog.
These movies all achieved outstanding demand levels within the first five months of 2023, above the 97th percentile for the U.S. market. Sarah Polley is in talks to direct a live-action remake of Walt Disney’s “Bambi,” TheWrap has learned. Details on the project are scarce, but she will work off a recent screenplay draft penned by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster and the film will be a musical featuring music from Kacey Musgraves.
