Few filmmakers can boast a filmography like Christopher Nolan. The legendary director has risen to all-time-great since his arrival in the ‘90s, moving from cerebral indie fare like Memento and Following, to none-more-ambitious brain-twisting blockbusters like Inception and the Oscar-dominating Oppenheimer. Factor in one of the greatest superhero trilogies of all time with the Dark Knight movies, bold originals like Interstellar and Tenet, and instant-classic thrillers like The Prestige and Dunkirk, and you have a body of work for the ages. And as the director tells Empire, none of it worked out quite how he expected.
For Empire's Christopher Nolan Special Collector’s Edition, we sat down with Nolan – and his producing partner and wife Emma Thomas – for a major new career-spanning interview, looking back on everything they’ve achieved. Christopher Nolan revealed to Empire in an interview that his filmography owes a lot to James Bond films. The director is known for his often non-linear narrative and a commitment to making groundbreaking films, and now it seems a lot of that comes from a love for Bond films.
Batman Begins | Warner Brothers
While inspiration that Nolan has taken from the franchise is clear in films like Tenet, there is another film from the director that takes clear cues from the Bond franchise: his Batman trilogy, starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne and Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon.
Christopher Nolan “plundered” from Bond movies
Daniel Craig as James Bond in No Time To Die | MGM
Bond films usually have some of the best spy action ever put to the big screen, and deal with balancing cerebral plots with action set pieces that are also reminiscent of the spy thrillers of old.

Veteran director Christopher Nolan is known for his iconic films like Interstellar, Inception, and, Oppenheimer. With some iconic ideas and mind-bending scripts that make the twisted world of time, space, and, people, Nolan is one of a kind director for the world.
Anne Hathaway as Amelia Brand in Interstellar | Paramount Pictures
Although Interstellar is somewhat Nolan’s brainchild, his brother Jonathan Nolan was attached to the film as its writer. With director Steven Spielberg attached originally as the director, J. Nolan revealed that the spirit of the original script remained even after changing directors.

Watching movies on the big screen is an indulgence these days. Everyone prefers sitting in their homes, opening Netflix or Prime or any other streaming site, and watching whatever they feel like. But seems like viewers will have to indulge a little more than usual if they want to experience movies and not just watch them. Just ask Christopher Nolan, and he can tell you all about the IMAX experience.

Actor Denzel Washington’s son John David Washington added to his resume by starring in the Christopher Nolan sci-fi feature Tenet. John David was already featured in several films by that point, but Washington found Tenet to be one of his son’s biggest films.

It seems Nolan had his eye on John David for a long time. Long before Tenet even went into production, Nolan stumbled onto a few of the actor’s earlier projects. He was more than impressed by what Washington brought to the table. In an interview with Esquire, it was noted that Nolan first became aware of John David after seeing him in the HBO series Ballers. From there, his interest in the actor grew after seeing the premiere of John David’s critically acclaimed film Blackkklansman.

Long before he confused the heck out of all of us with "Tenet," Christopher Nolan was producing scripts so perplexing that even veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio and Guy Pearce didn't understand them. Tom Hardy has admitted to taking a leap on the script for "Inception," which he claimed was a "bit complicated," and Nolan even confused himself by including a famous line in "The Dark Knight" that he didn't understand.
So, even if you're a Nolan fan, you're likely used to being befuddled by the director's efforts. But the man basically announced his arrival in Hollywood as a filmmaker with a penchant for the perplexing. After self-financing his first film, "Following," which contained several Nolan trademarks including a non-linear narrative, the director found himself with a modest budget for his studio debut, "Memento." One of Hollywood’s most prominent faces, Robert Pattinson, boasts a stellar career with the Twilight Saga and Matt Reeves’ The Batman standing out as the crowning jewels. However, like many other actors in the industry, he too had his share of struggles in the past before making it big. Born in London, the star faced a tough time in cracking his way into showbiz. Already possessing prowess with acting, he also resorted to the territory of extending his wit to make it through.

Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was one of the director’s more cerebral works, one that required some level of innovation when it came to the stuntwork. Nolan has been known to make films that routinely push the envelope in one manner or another, delivering a film that has a lot of heart with well-executed scenes, whether it be drama, action, tragedy, or comedy.
Robert Pattinson and John David Washington in Tenet
One of the most innovative scenes that were in Tenet was the reverse fight scene John David Washington participated. While it could have been the case that the director shot the scene the right way forward and then reversed it for the film, Nolan actually wanted the backward fight scene to be choreographed, which Washington revealed, was quite the challenge for the stunt workers, who had been in the film industry for quite some time.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Exclusive: Hundreds more layoffs are incoming at Dune and Oppenheimer VFX firm Dneg.
Deadline is told that the outfit has kicked off a consultation process in at least the UK and Canada, which could see an exodus of around 5% of Dneg’s circa-10,000-strong global workforce. Dneg had not responded to comment requests by press time.
Layoffs are understood to be somewhat concentrated within R&d teams and are a response to the challenged market, which has not eased up since the Hollywood strikes ended and has not improved sufficiently after Dneg brought in a pay offer for staff last year.
In the UK, where sources say the number of layoffs is predicted to be around 100, Bectu boss Philippa Childs said the union is “continuing to do everything we can to support our members who are affected by these redundancies.”

The partners also unveiled what they described as “two of the world’s largest LED volume stages” in London and Rome.
Dneg and Dimension initially struck a joint venture deal in 2021 to partner on virtual production services. Dneg 360 expands on the partnership to also include visualization, content creation, and development services.

Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
As part of the “Climate Reality Check,” just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now a more extensive study published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment has analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022 under the same criteria.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.

While Christopher Nolan is seen as the forerunner of original ideas in Hollywood with films such as Tenet and Inception, the filmmaker once redefined the superhero genre with his The Dark Knight trilogy. The films saw Christian Bale as Batman and depicted a realistic version of Gotham and the Caped Crusader, and dealt with philosophical and real-world issues such as the nature of violence and the right to privacy.
While The Dark Knight trilogy is often placed among the greatest superhero films ever made, Nolan reportedly also had a hand in making one of the most underrated animated Batman movies. According to Bruce Timm, Nolan was deeply involved in the making of Batman: Gotham Knight, which was set between the events of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

This post contains spoilers for "Tenet."
Time inversions, palindromes, and temporal pincer movements — these are just some of the concepts that contribute to the wonderfully confusing narrative of "Tenet," which is an experience that benefits the most from repeat viewings. The moment a story defies linear comprehension and flits between different points in time, things get a bit tricky, especially within the context of a mission to preserve the past from the future, where time is being reversed for people to move backward. The events in "Tenet" are palindromic, where moments that move forward and backward in time eventually meet to form a closed temporal loop, where every character is seen participating in multiple timelines until the loop is closed.
The key to understanding "Tenet" is inversion, a process achieved when entropy is reversed, allowing a person or object to move backward in time, as opposed to traditional forward progression.

Having directed the brilliant Arrival (2015), Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and the two Dune movies (2021 and 2024), Denis Villeneuve has already inscribed his name in cinematic history as the acclaimed sci-fi filmmaker.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
It comes as no surprise that this iconic Old Hollywood masterpiece is in Villeneuve’s list. According to his own admission, Kubrick’s epic space opera was his first "cinematic shock" that became his most favorite movie, inspiring him for his own science fiction works.
2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Steven Spielberg’s classic drama movie affected not only the 1980’s genre’s features, but also the Dune director’s cinema taste, entering him the world of the French New Wave by assembling Francois Truffaut in its cast, and, obviously, his love for sci-fi films.

How interconnected is everything? From atoms and cells and tiny molecules to galaxies and black holes - it's all connected through space and time and relativity. This overwhelming concept explored in this amusing, psychedelic, mind-melting animated short film. Cosmohedron is created by the Boston-based animator / illustrator Duncan Hatch, who is known for this very hallucinogenic style. There's not much of an intro to it because not much needs to be said: "A surreal journey through the interconnections between all things." Including aliens and other weird creatures, not just humans! Just as Christopher Nolan wrote into the Tenet script: "Don't try to understand it, just feel it." Indeed. That's the best way to watch this one. I'm a big fan of these kind of mesmerizing, trippy animated creations and enjoy featuring them in our Short Film section. I appreciate how many weird characters are in this, I'd happily spend more time...

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho chose Pattinson to play the lead role in his film titled Mickey 17. The film is being described as a sci-fi plot with a complex narrative. A filmmaker of Joon-ho’s stature could have picked any actor in the world for the role. But apparently, there was something that drew him into casting Pattinson.

CinemaCon is currently going on in Las Vegas, with theater owners and members of the industry on hand to examine the state of the movie business. One issue that's already come up in a big way is piracy. Motion Picture Association (MPA) Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin took the stage during the State of the Industry presentation on Tuesday and spoke passionately about the matter of people pirating films. Rivkin boldly claimed that piracy costs theaters an estimated $1 billion at the box office annually right now. But the MPA isn't content to just let that continue, as it's also announced a plan to help fight the problem.
Rivkin revealed that the MPA now plans to work with Congress to enact site-blocking legislation in the U.S. This is not the first time that such legislation has been proposed, but as Rivkin pointed out, more than 60 countries around the world have adopted such measures.

Ramy Youssef may not be a household name, but his self-titled comedy series "Ramy" on Hulu landed him Emmy nominations for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, not to mention a Peabody Award in 2020. So, he's got the right amount of experience and accolades to be called up to host "Saturday Night Live." Furthermore, Youssef is an established stand-up comedian, joining the likes of Nate Bargatze and Shane Gillis as hosts this season. But how did he handle the live sketch comedy of "SNL" in his hosting debut?
Well, Ramy Youssef doesn't seem to have much versatility when it comes to providing a variety of characters, and "SNL" leaned back on familiar formulas like talk shows and game shows, though they still delivered some hearty laughs. But there were also some amusing, peculiar sketches in this episode, and of course, big laughs...

More than eight months (and one Oscar best picture win) after “Oppenheimer” landed in theaters, Christopher Nolan’s historical epic is still finding new audiences.
The film opened over the weekend in its final market, Japan, with $2.5 million from 343 theaters. It placed third on the country’s box office charts after two local offerings, the horror movie “Strange House” and the animated “Haikyu!!” According to Universal Pictures, “Oppenheimer” is the biggest opening weekend of 2024 for a Hollywood release in Japan, surpassing “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” ($1.6 million) and “Dune: Part Two” ($1.3 million).
With these ticket sales, “Oppenheimer” stands at a staggering $965 million globally. It’s a remarkable tally for a three-hour, R-rated drama that mostly takes place in laboratories and the halls of American government. In addition to box office riches, the $100-million budgeted film won seven Oscars, including best picture and director.

Basically, everyone knows Sydney Sweeney at this point. The young actress has had a string of successful projects after her breakout role in HBO’s Euphoria. We on Fiction Horizon have written about her more than once and with her new film, Immaculate, currently airing in theaters, Sweeney is often talking to newspapers and magazines as part of her promotion of the film.
Immaculate is a horror film with a religious subcontext that follows a young woman called Cecilia who has to face the horrors and secrets of a convent in Italy that has become her new home. Sweeney has expressed her enthusiasm over the movie and the role on more than one occasion, but as IndieWire reports, the actress is not proud of all of her past roles and the influence she had over her characters.
This is what she said:

Remember the days of waiting for months, sometimes even a year, to watch a blockbuster movie at home? Well, that tradition seems to be fading fast.
Take Kung Fu Panda 4, for example. The film just came out in theaters this month, but guess what? It’s already going to be available for streaming in April (a mere month after its theatrical debut)!
Kung Fu Panda 4
This rapid turnaround reminds of what Christopher Nolan talked about when he was promoting his movie Tenet. He emphasized why theatrical release for a longer run is important.

One does not need to look further than Christopher Nolan when it comes to ‘visionary’ and ‘luminary’ in modern cinema. A recent example is his Oscar-winning film, Oppenheimer, through which Nolan not only impressed but left everyone shocked with how far the bounds of storytelling and filmmaking can be pushed. And so to imagine Nolan directing a horror flick is no less than a dream come true for any fan of the genre. After the director himself expressed his interest in the niche, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has the perfect movie waiting for Nolan to make.

There's no one way to play Batman. With "Batman Returns," star Michael Keaton cut more than half his lines, making for a broody, mysterious Dark Knight that fit perfectly among the more outlandish freaks that populated Tim Burton and production designer Bo Welch's nightmare fairytale landscape. For his Dark Knight trilogy, however, Christopher Nolan wasn't afraid to let Christian Bale's Batman bellow multiple lines using his now-famous guttural growl.
Both approaches worked, but there's no doubt Nolan's trilogy presented a much more quotable Dark Knight. Several of Bale's most striking Batman lines have now been solidified in pop culture history, with perhaps his infamously overwrought "Swear to me!" from "Batman Begins" being the most salient example. But Bale's Batman wasn't the only part of Nolan's trilogy that proved infinitely quotable. The director's scripts were a treasure trove of meme-able lines, many of which found their way into mass culture almost immediately.

Christopher Nolan and his wife/producing partner, Emma Thomas, have receied their fair share of acclaim for 2023’s Oppenheimer; now, even the British monarchy is getting in on the action. On Thursday, it was announced that Nolan will receive knighthood, and Thomas will receive damehood, for their contributions to film.
The honor arrives the same month Nolan took home his first-ever Oscar, having won for Best Director with Oppenheimer. Beyond his win, the film took home six additional awards, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and more.
Both Nolan and Thomas were born in London, and met while attending University College London. After marrying in 1997, the duo have collaborated on many films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Insomnia, Memento, and more.

"Dune: Part Two" has officially become a commercial success, passing huge box office milestones and creeping towards the $600 million mark worldwide. Director Denis Villeneuve has thus proven wrong those who said Frank Herbert's celebrated "Dune" novel was "unfilmable," especially when you consider the critical response in conjunction with those box office numbers. "Dune: Part Two" might be a bleak blockbuster, but it's so far managed a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a similarly impressive 95% audience score.
It's safe to say, then, that Villeneuve's epic sci-fi sequel is not only a critical and commercial success but perhaps even a box office savior. Back in February, prior to the film's March debut, /Film's Ryan Scott noted that movie ticket sales were down 15% compared to the same point in 2023, and there's not a movie fan out there who isn't aware of the industry's post-pandemic struggles. If there’s one thing avid enthusiasts of Christopher Nolan know about him besides his affinity for physics and his knack for creating masterpieces, it’s his tech-averse disposition. He himself has admitted to it, although not due to a particular disdain for it. The Oscar-winning director doesn’t resort to online activity when he could use the in-between time to engage in his art.

“How can a short, blond actor with the rough face of a professional boxer and a penchant for playing villains, killers, cranks, and cads pull off the role of a tall, dark, handsome, and suave secret agent?”
So asks the front page of the website Daniel Craig is Not Bond, one of many fan-sites launched in the wake of the actor getting cast as James Bond for Casino Royale back in 2005. Nearly two decades later, the question seems laughable, as Craig elevated the franchise into something rich and emotionally dense, touching on qualities the series rarely attempted.
The 20/20 hindsight about Craig’s tenure comes in handy with the escalating rumors that Eon Productions have offered Aaron Taylor-Johnson the Bond role. On paper, Taylor-Johnson seems like the safe choice, a conventionally handsome white Englishman, a veteran of big-budget movies such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Godzilla, and Tenet.

While Taylor-Johnson has not yet played James Bond, he is no stranger to action movies or spy thrillers.
Daniel Craig officially turned in his license to kill following 2021’s “No Time to Die,” and in the three years since, there has been a nearly insatiable stream of rumors about who would pick up the 007 mantle. On Tuesday, all of the speculation seems to have been ended as The Sun reports that British film star Aaron Taylor-Johnson has officially been offered the role, and that the official contract is set to be signed in the next week.
Word of Taylor-Johnson’s candidacy for the role has been well-known since 2022, but he was far from the only major name in the running. Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, Cillian Murphy, and James Norton were all rumored to be in consideration at one point, but it appears that Eon Productions has found its latest spy.

Interstellar is undoubtedly one of Christopher Nolan’s most popular films from his career. Halloween is still seven months away, but Blumhouse is hoping to tide horror fans over by putting some of its library titles back into theaters.
AMC Theatres will host the five-day event in more than 40 cities and on 100 of its locations, with tickets going for $8. The lineup includes Split (Friday, March 29), The Purge (Saturday, March 30), Ouija: Origin of Evil (Sunday, March 31), Insidious (Monday, April 1 — which is the film’s 13th anniversary) and The Invisible Man (Tuesday, April 2).
“We wanted to celebrate local communities of horror fans throughout the country with a fun, affordable and slightly evil night at the movies. We’re grateful to our partners at AMC for helping us bring this idea to life,” said Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum in a statement.
Added AMC EVP worldwide programming and Cco: “Blumhouse films terrify and delight horror fans. We are excited to bring these favorites back to the big screen.

Now that the Oscar winners are known, we can determine the other winners: the studios’ and distributors’ strategic release decisions that impacted results.
Some may reflect genius or gut instinct; others are timing and preparation creating luck. In each case, distribution (or the lack thereof) played a significant role in positioning the films for success — but none of them could be considered a template.
Surprisingly, the universal non-factor appeared to be SAG strike, which constrained promotion. “Oppenheimer” completed most cast appearances in time, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” had press stockpiled from Cannes. The French “Anatomy of a Fall” was unaffected.
“The Holdovers,” along with “Priscilla,” took the biggest chances with their October releases. Both made platform debuts on the same day. Sofia Coppola’s biopic showed a faster response, but Alexander Payne’s film found awards success (as well as a near-equal box office haul and bigger home...

As Christopher Nolan basks in the afterglow of Oppenheimer’s dominant performance at the 96th annual Academy Awards – including a best picture win for the film and a long-overdue best director nod for Nolan himself – speculation is growing about what the British filmmaker will tackle next for his 13th feature. Nolan is typically reticent to speak about future projects; with the director working on a more or less three-year cycle for his last several films, he might not even officially say anything about his new movie until later in 2024 or early in 2025.
But according to rumors that have surfaced online in the past week, Nolan may tackle as his next film a big-screen version of the cult classic TV series The Prisoner, which was broadcast in the UK in 1967 and the US in 1968. The show, which ran for a single season consisting of 17 episodes, was created by Irish actor/writer Patrick McGoohan,...

Oppenheimer was a massive success and a new milestone for filmmaking, from the cast and crew and everyone else who contributed during the production was a recipe for Oscar nominations, and wins but one aspect of any film or television that elevates the story is music and composer Ludwig Göransson deserved the win but upset the gaming community in the process.
Göransson also composed the score for other great films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and even won an Oscar for Black Panther, he later worked on the sequel: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and scored the first two Creed films and his first project with the legendary visionary Christopher Nolan was Tenet, as well for the Star Wars series on Disney+ The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. The talent he possesses is monumental, however the gaming community was offended by his recent victory speech.
