Looking at the first half of the year, January to June 2023, one would believe that the film industry has yet to come out of the Covid-19 lockdown effect. The films just don’t seem to work. Nor do the top-billing stars. Were it for the Covid-19 hangover, how does one explain the blockbuster success of ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Kerala Story’? How does one account for the success of ‘Pathaan’, ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’,’Zara Hatkke Zara Bachke’, and the last year’s release ‘Drishyam 2’?
As against these successes, what explains the failure of such massively budgeted vehicles such as ‘Adipurush’, to cite the very recent example? Looks like the Hindi audience is not lured by films that are mainly made on computers with VFX!
Indians miss the human story, emotions, humour and music. Something closer to their heart, what they can identify with. The viewers want normal...

A lot of films have been at the centre of controversies in all the years I have been an observer of the film trade. Some, because they chose a subject where a certain community was at the centre of the story, some, while they were attempting a realistic film, and some others who loved a book penned by a renowned writer, decided it was worth retelling it as a film and getting brickbats in return.
Take, for instance, ‘Ramnagari’ by Ram Nagarkar. The film was made by the National Award-winning filmmaker Kantilal Rathod in 1982. Objections were raised against certain references in the film and the Censor Board stalled its release. The problem Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Billu Barber’ faced some 27 years later was similar. The community known as Nayi or Hajam is called Barber in English.

Questioning whether the Censor Board was ‘sleeping’, the Maharashtra Congress on Monday demanded a ban on the Bollywood film “Adipurush” for insulting Hindu religious idols. State party president Nana Patole said that Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman have been ‘insulted’ in the film that was released last weekend and sparked outrage in different states.
“The Bharatiya Janata Party always keeps shouting that it is a pro-Hindutva government, but when it concerns a movie that heaps abuse on Lord Ram and Shri Hanuman, it has kept silent,” said Patole.
He said that the character of Shri Hanuman has been given ‘slang dialogues’ and in the name of making the Rs 500-crore budget movie, “they have made a cartoon film”.
“How was this film cleared in the first place? Was the Central Board of Film Censors sleeping at the time? We demand that the film be banned and the film-makers should apologise...

Last year in October, the seers had objected to the 'distortion' seen in the film's trailer. The head priest of Ram Janmabhoomi, Acharya Satyendra Das, said that despite earlier protests, the filmmakers have misrepresented the characters of Ramayana and shown Hindu deities in a 'distorted' manner. "The dialogues are shameful and the film should be banned immediately," he said. "Lord Ram, Lord Hanuman and Ravana have been presented in a totally different manner.

“Adipurush,” director Om Raut’s retelling of Indian mythological epic “Ramayana,” emerged the fifth highest box office earner in the world in its opening weekend, despite some mixed reviews at home.
The film, which stars Prabhas (the Baahubali franchise), Kriti Sanon (“Bhediya”) and Saif Ali Khan (“Vikram Vedha”), opened on June 16 worldwide in Hindi, Telugu Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada-language versions. Writer Manoj Muntashir justifies it.Not more than a day has passed since the film’s release, and team Adipurush is already caught in a deluge of controversies. Amid reports of fans assaulting filmgoers for criticising the Prabhas starrer, a Nepalese politician threatening to restrict Hindi films in Kathmandu over the film’s claim that Sita is “India’s daughter”, and the Hindu Sena filing a public interest litigation against the film for allegedly making a “mockery” of Ramayana, a scene from the film featuring actor Devdatta Nage (who portrays Hanuman) is triggering major outrage. Ahead of the depiction of the famed Lanka Dahanam scene from the Hindu epic Ramayana, which Adipurush is adapted from, Devdatta can be heard spouting the dialogue, “Tel tere baap ka, aag bhi tere baap ki, aur jalegi bhi tere baap ki,...

Adipurush is an Indian mythological film based on the Hindu epic Ramayana by Valmiki. The film is written and directed by Om Raut. While Adipurush literally translates to ‘first man’, Om Raut interprets it as ‘best man’ in the context of the film. We have two great references – ‘Ramayana’ (1987) – of course the most loved and revered version by Ramanand Sagar and the other being ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ (1993) by Yugo Sako. Frankly, for the generation who have loved either or both find it difficult to sink into anything else. There have been number of other attempts too, to create the epic. Om Raut who shot to fame with Tanhaji is the latest to attempt re-telling the epic; finds it too hot to handle!

The actor initially faced difficulty because the scenes were being shot through motion capture.

ReviewSaif Ali Khan is adequately leery and manic as Ravan in this Om Raut directorial, but there’s only so much he can do with such a shallow script.Prabhas as Ram in AdipurushIt is often said that the Ramayana is about how people ought to be, while the Mahabharata is about how people are. In the epic, Ram, the symbol of ideal behaviour and practice, is a young prince who renounces his right over his kingdom, and leaves for the jungle in the company of his equally young wife and brother. His trials and tribulations don’t end there – and each time he is tested, he must choose the path of righteousness. Beyond religious reasons, the story has such a hold across generations also because it has such fantastic drama. A family feud, a noble hero who is deprived of his birthright, a beautiful woman who is abducted by a lustful villain,...

NewsAdipurush, an adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana, was released in theatres on Friday, June 16.The hero worship of film actors is not uncommon in southern states. This would often translate into toxic online fan wars and orchestrated troll attacks, with the fans refusing to tolerate any criticism of their favourite star or their movie. But things turned violent on Friday, June 16, when a filmgoer was physically assaulted by actor Prabhas’s fans for stating that his latest release Adipurush was awful. The unsuspecting movie watcher, who is yet to be identified, was sharing his opinion about the movie with the YouTube content creators waiting outside the Prasads multiplex in Hyderabad, to report on the first-day audience response to the big-budget film. S.S. Rajamouli was in the middle of his Oscar campaign when India threw a wrench into the process. The country announced this week that it will not submit “Rrr,” the breakthrough Indian Telugu-language action-adventure epic that has become a surprise hit in the U.S., as its official Oscar submission for Best International Feature. Instead, the Film Federation of India went with “Last Film Show,” an autobiographical coming-of-age drama about young boy’s burgeoning love of movies.
For many audiences who have embraced “Rrr” in recent months, the decision comes as a shock on many fronts. “Rrr” was the rare crossover event movie from India. The movie pulled in 65 million on opening weekend in India, then grossed 14 million in the U.S., thanks to a theatrical relaunch in arthouses that Variance Releasing dubbed “encoRRRe”; that overlapped with a Hindi-language dub surfacing on Netflix, where it became an even bigger phenomenon.
