Masters of the Air (2024)
Good show but it ain't no Band of Brothers
Good show but it ain't no Band of Brothers. I put this show squarely between Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the later being a washed out boring retelling of the war in the Pacific, which was a terrible let down after the perfection of Band of Brothers. Masters of the Air relies too much on CGI, as most things do these days.
One of, if not the most riveting scenes in Band of Brothers was the one of the Paratroopers being dropped behind enemy lines on D Day while their planes were being blown apart with crews still inside, so I guess they decided to make an entire series around the lore of the pilots and their crews because there's obviously a great deal more stories like that. This show tells them passably, but not well.
The cast is passable, the directing is alright, the production is top tier but the obvious CGI breaks the narrative sometimes, and I wish there was less of it.
The New Look (2024)
Sumptuous exploration of Vichy Paris and the designers who inhabited it
Sumptuous exploration of Vichy Paris and the designers who inhabited it. I've known all my adult life that Coco Channel was a Nazi collaborator, but I did not know the story about Christian Dior, his sister in the resistance, or her time at a work camp. This all set during the Nazi's occupation, and final retreat from France, is produced so well, with such an excellent top tier cast, top tier directing, set design, writing, pace, just about everything about this show is excellent I'm very surprised to see it not doing better in the user reviews and ratings. In an era of reality TV drivel, this quality show is so needed.
Shôgun (2024)
Shogun is great tv, but not a 10
Not sure where all these 10's are coming from, Shogun is excellent television for sure, but the obvious heavy handed CGI takes me right out of the narrative a lot of time, and it's a shame. But such is big budget scifi and historical pieces these days. I don't remember seeing the previous iteration on television back in the 80's I think, but this one's got all the right ingredients, and I'm also not sure how faithful it is to the original source material. Seems like it's a blockbuster breakout hit which can only be a positive, but I'd rather see more practical sets and less CGI is all I'm saying.
