Bodkin (2024)
More pointless scenes of violence to animals
As is often usual for Netflix - potential made sour. A refreshing story with a good cast, darkly comedic and well studied. However, I am tired of depictions of pointless, gratuitous scenes of injured or slaughtered animals, with lingering shots of them struggling to breathe whilst pouring blood. It adds nothing to the story and is never mentioned in the disclaimers. I wish there was a warning for this and hope that might change at some point.
Otherwise, a fantastic foray into the surreal. A perfect setting for those who love a well paced mystery drama. I loved the lead character and the diverse relationships between the three of them.
Enys Men (2022)
Stunning addition to the British Folk Horror genre.
An astonishing mix of textures, both in sound and vision; this is a welcome addition to the genre. Fabulous work from all involved, particularly the lead. Not sure why this seems to have upset many reviewers, perhaps this is because it does not conform to the mainstream expectations of what a stock 'horror' film typically delivers.
This is slow, considered, pacing back and forth as the tension accumulates. I particularly loved the close up textures of the landscape flora and fauna, the soft/sharp use of light, the blending of the present with the past, and the woman's seemingly calm acceptance of the order of things, as the energy of this place consumes her.
Is there a willingness on her part? I cannot tell.
Most of all, I admire this film's denial of the typical story arc. It is what it is, and has no intention to placate or conform. Well done to everyone involved, I shall return to this again and again.
