Gon-ji-am (2018)
Just awful..
I don't want to waste much more time around this movie, but just a final warning here for those who think it might be worth theirs. This movie is probably the worst of the kind i've seen, and boy have i seen some barrel-bottom ones over the years. First of all, it's not scary. And the effects aren't good or convincing. Second, it takes forever to get to some measure of activity. And third, but worst of all, every single character is so annoying that it ruins any kind of suspense or atmosphere there otherwise could have been, and which usually saves others in the genre a few points. I just can't find anything good to say about it, no matter how hard I try.
Baio hantâ (1995)
Pretty good sci-fi/horror anime
This is definitely a bit of an overlooked anime. Its not the best of its kind, but definitely worth seeing for fans of both Kawajiri and this style of animation (which basically is him when you boil it down). If you liked any other of Kawajiri's projects you should be able to get into this too. I would place it close to wicked city, Cyber city oedo 808 and goku midnight eye, both style-wise and in its general mood. But you will find some more general elements in it as well. I find it better than wicked city almost as good as goku & cyber city The story is pretty straightforward, and not incredibly complex, but still it works well with he overall dark mood and atmosphere of the film. Soundtrack is imo incredible and well-fitting with the dark animations, characters are also good considering the shortness of it all..and very importantly to me the dialogue isn't too cheesy (from subtitles at least, i don't know Japanese). It doesn't really bother me that it only runs short of an hour, cause it makes it more dynamic i think.
Overall i say 7 out of 10 for this kind of anime
Dark City (1998)
For once, believe the hype
Wow. I find it more and more rare when i check out highly rated movies on IMDb that i like them that much...and it isn't because i put my expectations that high, I've learned better over time.
But this time its actually a movie that had a lot of hype connected to it, but where i find that the rating is almost too low. And i cant believe that this is the same director of I, Robot which i found to be really only average. Dark City is simply a great movie, with an atmosphere and story that really drags you in from the beginning to the end. And i don't think it is only for sci-fi fans. I was also surprised that it was the Proyas own story...i mean of course he was inspired by many things for it, but i think he left a unique mark with it.
Proyas could have been a damn good candidate for directing at least some of the storm of superhero movies thats been coming out lately, i hope it isn't because he has been ignored cause the man can really create some tension and keep a good story together....maybe it just doesn't interested him. well there's still hope
8 out of 10 for Dark City
- And it is mainly because of Sutherland's character that i didn't give it 9. He was a bit annoying and plays a big part of the movie. Well, nothing is ever perfect, and getting 8 means truly great in my book.
Kenpuu Denki Berserk (1997)
"Bold and the beautiful" placed in a medieval-anime setting
OK, time to kill some of the hype here. I'm not doing this solely for the purpose of sabotaging the high ranking, but i think people should have a look at the other side of the coin before potentially going out and buying this series and end up disappointed. I will never understand what it is that makes people so satisfied about berserk, since it gives you next to nothing to work with, but i can live with that. I'm sure there must be others like me out there who would like to be warned before plunging into hours of nonsense.
I gave up on it almost from the start, but kept it going by saying to myself that next episode, it was surely gonna take off! No chance. There are occasional bursts of action here and there, but i think the main reason that they are good is because the rest of the series is for about 90% inactivity - imagine one long tea party of pocket philosophies, completely irrational and sometimes bizarrely rejective behavior(even by Japanese standards), not even hints or traces of some underlying mythologies throughout the story, and just no reason to like the characters at all. The animation isn't something to write home about either, except in very few places. Most episodes are boring all the way through, the characters just drag on and on, talking nonsense with no purpose in life. I cant believe i kept on buying into the argument that "The series really gets better and better the further you get into it". Its just not true.
There also exists a lot of hype about the turn of events berserk takes towards the end (dont worry i wont reveal anything). That was indeed also what kept my curiosity going from the start and eventually got me all the way through. Actually, there isn't really anything you could spoil about the whole series besides telling in details about this, thats the amount of story that we're dealing with here. So if you, like me, have been told great tales about it, i suggest that you kill that thought right away. Its NOT worth watching 20+ episodes for.
And oh yeah...it has taken me about a ½ year to watch this to the end! I just crammed the last 5 eps, and I'm so glad its finally out of my life. What a complete waste of time, its been much more fun to write this review even
I've given this a 2 out of 10 because it has its few good moments - mostly its due to nice battle scenes, even though they are scarce. Besides that, its a real pain. Go watch your granny knitting stockings instead, there's a good chance you might get more exited
