Inspector Rishi (2024)
Mother Nature is watching us from everywhere!
Folklore, horror, super natural, thriller, jungle, poaching, LGBTQ, superstitions, friendship , loyalty, hallucinations- so many themes packed for a slow yet eventful show.
A skeptic crime branch Inspector Rishi Nandhan is assigned to investigate a series of bizarre murders in a small mountain village, committed by a deadly forest ghoul called the Vanaratchi.
The investigation builds up most of the drama along with beautiful sub plots and flashbacks.
The only flaw for this gritty and haunting show is the pacing. The initial 3-4 episodes become drag and slow to set up. The transitions, montages and editing drag the pace which would have easily got the show to a gripping drama. Due to this, the depth is lacking and the emotional backstories felt forced.
Yet you would be invested with the show for the horror, the thrilling drama, the murders and the horrifying reality of poaching. The writing shifts gears from becoming murder mystery to a horror folks tale to grotesque poaching reaching to a penultimate climax.
Performance wise Naveen Chandra & Srikrishna Dayal blend a Ram Balram duo. But it is the supporting cast of Kanna Ravi, Malini & Sunaina who get the best moments and they give their heart out. Watch out for their performance in the later part of the show.
Absolute Kudos and spectacular production design, the cinematography, the gripping BGM, the claustrophobic and haunting jungle and the ease with which everything blends together. Special mentions to the creature effects and the VFX - spot on and believable.
The dubbing may sound silly - there is a caricature dubbing of typical South Indian lingo and accent which comes out of the blue for the supporting cast.
If you loved Poachers, which was an even gripping amazing drama then Inspector Rishi will blend the elements of horror with it.
The Gentlemen (2024)
Guy Ritchie writing-directing a show.
A delightful escape from reality with this one.
The Irish writer-director does what he does and shows that he is the master at it - witty dialogues, complex yet funny characters and their twisted turns, lavish storyline and plot, luxurious look with blood and wine, quick edits and cute, linear plot with quick montage shots.
All is absolutely delightful.
Guy Ritchie extends his movie "The Gentlemen" to a standalone show of 8 episodes, which doesn't feel dragged, lazy, forced or predictable throughout its runtime. The writing keeps you engaged with clever dialogue baazi and gritting performances.
Episode 1 sets up the plot and it's straight forward narrative, and with each episode you get hooked to the adventures and absurd drama.
There are nostalgic moments from Snatch, Rock n Rolla along with the super titles of the action, characters and paraphrases along with whiskey, wine, shots and beautiful cinematography.
Dhootha (2023)
Engaging!
News articles are supposed to tell facts, not the future. A gripping and slow burning thriller where a journalist's life gets turned into super natural incidents where whatever is about to happen around him, is conveyed through newspaper articles.
The show is more believable and engaging as the writing is grounded and every character is shown with flaws and issues.
There is no stereotypical nature for the journalist and their lives, they too are humans and they make mistakes as well.
Apart from that, the investigation and the mix of super natural & logic behind it is done superbly. The murders and how they are shot are freaking crazy. What starts as a slow set up, it gets eerie and mysterious with each murder.
Kudos to the atmospherics and BGM, at only one point the set up is shot in day without rain. The rest of the show is completely in heavy rains and slow BGM and camera work.
Although, almost by the end of the show - it gets predictable however - the climax is a big surprise. This is the big win for the writers of this show - just when you think everything is predictable, the tables are turned and the unpredictable happens.
Worth the binge !
Vickida No Varghodo (2022)
Ab absolute laugh riot!!
"Vickida No Varghodo" is absolute light hearted and non stop laughter festival.
Ths son of a well known Gathiya king from Bhavnagar goes through the different forms of love in his life, only to witness all the women he loved assemble for his marriage where he has to make an ultimate decision - to whom he will marry ?
The story may seem cliche and predictable on the surface, however it is the amazing writing, dialogues and chemistry of all the characters that will keep you engaged till the very end.
There are relatable sub-plots that will get you Nostalgic - the decision of taking science after 10th, the Bajrang dal gang a.k.a Lattha Gang, the first kiss on the cheeks, lying to your parents for your crush, sacrificing dreams for your love, the chaos a family goes through during a wedding - all these and many more subtle moments are performed so flawlessly.
It is the top notch the dialogues and back-to-back punches that will keep you laugh throughout its 2.30 hrs. Mind well, you won't absolutely find it that long !
When you talk about Gujarati rom-com or any rom-com for that matter, Music becomes an underrated soul of the script. Kudos to the soulful soundtrack which include pool of talented voices - Sonu Nigam, Altaj Raja, Abhay Jodhpurkar. Amar Khanda - the man behind all the songs captures elegantly every moment in his tunes.
Coming to the performances - you will literally find it difficult which of the 3 ladies is the best - Monal Gajjar, Manasi Racch & Jhinal Belani. All get equal screen space and they slay their characters. (My heart went to Monal Gajjar)
Known as the Superstar of Gujarati Industry - Malhar Thakkar - he brings life, soul and powerful energy to Vicki. It's easy to slip in a stereotype performance but Malhar gives so many variations with his timing. Every single punchline, in between reaction and those subtle mumbling are spot on.
Last time the director duo - Rahul Bhole & Vinit Kanojia - made a film, it brought National Award "Reva" in their kitty. We would expect them to make something like that, but here they are back with a family entertainer. They are absolutely on top of their game and it is their sleek execution to the story that make it an amazing to watch. When you faith and belief on your work, you don't want it to come on OTT directly and kudos to the director duo of releasing in theatres.
It is rollercoaster right from the start. You won't be bored any single moment. The movie is going to have healthy and long run in the theatres with the likes of Hollywood/Bollywood lined up, but belive me when you read - This is a movie that be worth your popcorn!
